Imho, Castle of Illusion on the Sega Master System is a bit better than the Megadrive/Genesis version (although the latter has better graphics of course).
They’re fairly different games, so it might not be the best example, but Mario Golf and Mario Tennis were much better on the GBC compared to their N64 counterparts. I love the RPG elements in the GBC versions, and the core gameplay is just as good as the N64 versions.
The Master System version of Global Gladiators is more fun than it is on the Mega Drive. Another "Master System beats Mega Drive IMHO" is Marble Madness - the SMS is more faithful to the arcade in terms of presentation and is easier on the ears than the 16-bit version. And to complete this trilogy, Krusty's Fun House - more animation on the sprites in the 8-bit port, less frustrating to play and it even has better speech samples!

@@ckingch Do you mean "Batman Returns" for SNES? Because the unreleased/prototype "Return of the Joker" for SNES was terrible, possibly even worse than the Mega Drive version (though the comparison is not entirely fair as it was unfinished).
the reason why there's loading on chrono trigger is just that in the SNES the game code worked like that because you can load things really fast on flash memory. even minimal things you try to read from disk takes a while because the CD has to spin. if they were to change that they'd have to remake the whole game, probably, which is something they wouldn't wanna do for a cheap port.
6:45 the answer is that most of this version of the game is emulated. There's even a rom on the disc that you can copy over to your PC. It's in Japanese, though. Anyways, it's an emulator tailor made for Chrono Trigger that natively uses the Playstation's sound chip. If I recall correctly it bears similarities to the one in the SNES. But that also means the game loads everything in at the same spots the SNES version does. They didn't really touch the source code for the game, just some patching and whatnot, so that was beyond their scope.
"it's in Japanese though" Yep, and the hotpatching process uses extra RAM that the PS1 doesn't have! That's why the English PS1 release loads so bloody much.
It's not emulated. "The ROM in the PSX CD is just a very unique way to hold game data; it's NEVER executed. The Chrono Trigger CD does not not contain an emulator, nor is the ROM emulated. If you look in the FF6 PSX CD and do a compare with the SNES ROM you will find that that CD contains the ROM too, but in FF6's case, the ROM has been "shattered" and split up into individual data sets. The executable data has been stripped. The CT ROM was actually there as a "secret bonus" for the Japanese market. It was put there on purpose." By the way, the older Steam/Android versions of Final Fantasy VI done before the pixel remasters do something similar. They contain the GBA ROM, but don't execute (emulate) the code inside it. They will only use it to get game data, such as enemy stats and placement, text etc.

Also, any time _Batman: Return of the Joker_ gets brought up I'm happy. Although, I can't help but notice that at no point in the footage does Batman use the charged weapon. Star Wars Jedi Power Battles on Dreamcast is improved in many ways over PS1 version, with better graphics and more modes, but it's also unfinished, in first level you cannot destroy computers and environment, which was a big thing in original. How did this happen, you may ask? Simple. The English version of PS1 Chrono Trigger decided to task the PS1 with hotpatching the Japanese ROM, rather than simply using the English one. The emulator the system used to run the game had a small enough RAM footprint to load the entire game ROM and SRAM into the PS1's memory banks, but just barely. Adding a patch to the mix pushed it over the edge and forced long loading times.
@@KopperNeoman The bit about hotpatching is interesting to hear! There's no way the entire ROM was loaded into RAM, though. Chrono Trigger came on a 4 MB cartridge, twice as big as the PlayStation's main memory.
18:59 On the Game Gear falling off screen in the 2nd jungle level does not kill you instead you free-fall with the screen scrolling back. You might end up on something deadly. The same is true for the Commodore 64 version.
There are others. But with less subscribers. There is one channel that does play through a of arcade games and every computer and system that is before the first PlayStation.
The Wii version of Rodea controls beautifully, you're crazy lol. It's a great example of what the Wii was truly intended for, no need for a nunchuck, just one hand on the remote and you can easily fly anywhere with full freedom, and perform any other action you need. And do you seriously get wrist pain just from wobbling your hand around slightly? You look spry for a 95 year old I must say. Also, the Wii version's graphics are objectively superior in every way except resolution. It's incredible how ugly they made the WiiU port look (compare 30:33, holy crap). I don't know how they even managed. Just goes to show that tech specs barely matter at all, it's 90% art.
I wish nunchuk had been an option though. Moving the camera with the d-pad was tough, and for a game where you need to be able to click on a surface to fly there, you needed to move the camera A LOT! There were so many times I died because I was about 5 feet short of a platform (usually because it took me so long to move the camera), and once you're under a platform, there's basically no way to get on top of it. I would not call these "beautiful controls".
@@PowerPandaMods Idunno man I never had a problem with the dpad camera controls. Maybe I just have long thumbs, lol. As for the problem you're describing with the platforms, I've never had that issue even after 100%ing the game, and (copypasting some of this from another comment I made to Joe) I'm wondering if it was made more difficult for you because you didn't know you can control the direction you launch into after locking on a target, by the direction you swing the wiimote? That in combination with the pointer makes these "beautiful" controls to me lol. To clarify a bit more how it works: say for example you're on the ground, and you want to fly to a destination right in front of you. You lock on with the pointer, then swing upward -> first you'll fly straight up, and THEN arc forwards toward your goal. This works in the air too, and in all directions. You can very smoothly navigate around obstacles like this, for example if you want to arc left or right around a pillar to get to a destination behind it. This makes it practically impossible, as far as I remember, to get in a situation like getting stuck under a platform. You'll notice in the video that Joe doesn't do this, he just "waggles" randomly so he smacks into everything constantly. But to be fair, I don't think the game ever explains this mechanic? I'm not sure, it's been a long long time. But yeah, there's just a purity to have all that power just in the wiimote. It totally feels like this is how the Wii was intended to be used (when the console was first revealed they only showed the Wiimote on its own after all), and the nunchuck feels like it was just a concession to traditional game design, like the classic controller.
I could see people arguing that the Game Boy Advanced version of a Super Nintendo game is worse just because of the screen crunch even though the Game Boy Advance is supposedly 32-bit and the Super Nintendo was 16-bit.
I can get on board for Sonic 1 for sure. It has a vibe all of its own and is a different but equally good game to the Megadrive version. The soundtrack is killer and not as overplayed. But Sonic 2 onwards are a disaster on Master System imo. Forgettable and ugly level design, horrid music and full of slowdown.
There was also an unreleased port of Return of the Joker for the SNES... which, in my opinion, was even worse than the Genesis one. The original NES game was basically the definitive version. And, just like the other Batman games released for the console, an excellent title.
Great, now I have to follow the universal law that states that when someone mentions Skies of Arcadia, I now have to go play Skies of Arcadia. So there's my next 30-40 hours.
But Virtua Fighter doesn’t have that kick ass opening song “oooh yeah! Fight for life” like the Jaguar game. Only the sophisticated 64 bit system could handle that song…
You do realize that "bits" was a completely meaningless and nonsensical marketing speak, right? BTW, Virtua Racing Deluxe looked and ran way better than the Atari clone on the Jaguar too. It doesn't really say much for either system's capabilities though, since vastly different level of talent was involved in developing these games.
I found replaying Wily Wars on the NSO that the lag has been mitigated quite well. The NES versions still are better but I found myself enjoying the NSO version quite a bit
26:25 Hmm...that's interesting, I never knew that since I've never played the Saturn version, they fixed that in the PC port, where they added the tournament mode and the extra camera options, as well as added Watch Mode, where you can see the AI duke it out with...itself, I'd say the definitive way to play VF Remix is the PC port.
My apologies, I didn't realize I wasn't already subscribed, kinda weird since I have been watching these videos for forever now. Anyway, I'm a new subscriber now.
28:24 Yes, I've been saying that for years. On the NES, the middle of my thumb rested over the A button, and the tip of thumb rested over the B button. I never could get the hang of using two fingers, or focusing a single digit on one button at a time. When the SNES came out, trying to mimic that holding pattern for the A and B buttons was insane. It felt more natural to rest the thumb over the B and Y buttons (X and square for PS, and so on).
Wily’s tower was a pretty fun mode..playing 1-3 on the NES is better for sure as an overall experience but it’s worth playing Wars just to try out the tower mode. The 8-bit games just sound better with that 8 bit music and effects
The load time issue of Chrono Trigger also exists for the PSX port of Ogre Battle. On the SNES, everything loaded instantly but on the Playstation? It was awful.
PS1 had a ton of low quality shovel ware. The PS1 is still my favorite Playstation console, but the SNES had all time classics including what I consider the greatest console game ever made in Chrono Trigger
The Donkey Kong Country games (at least part 1 and 2) exist for SNES and Game Boy Advance (16bit vs 32bit), and they're are better on SNES, in every aspect.
@Mintcar923 indeed, they added a few little things like bonus games so far I remember, but I find the SNES originals overall better, mainly in graphics and sound.
That's so bizarre how a console known for slow down in the NES would have noticeably less slowdown than the console supposed to have blast processing in the Genesis Mega Man ports
@@brendanroberts1310 Extra graphical effects too. Bowser's Inside Story has framedrops on O3DS that aren't present on the DS original for that reason, despite the fact that even the O3DS ARM11 is leagues above the DS' ARM7.

Game Sack nails it again with this deep dive into how sometimes weaker consoles can actually offer a better experience! 🎮 It’s crazy to think that nostalgia and quirky technical reasons can make older systems more fun to play on. The PS1 Chrono Trigger version with its emulation magic really stands out as a prime example. 💥 I can’t be the only one who loves the charm of these "less powerful" versions that give a unique twist to classic games!
My mother originally was set to name me Caspian, but thankfully she saw this Gay Master video from 1992 and realized that was a dumb name and changed it.
Regarding Chrono Trigger. The best version is actually on Nintendo DS. You get the anime cut scenes but no loading times. My preferred way is playing the DS version on a Wii U hooked up to a CRT.
errrrrmmmmm, have you played the 32X version of Virtua Fighter on _actual_ hardware? As it's the ONLY game I legally, physically, have in my 32X library, I SWEAR the samples are more crystal clear than 'depicted' on this compilation. Apologies for bringing this oversight up, but my experience cringed at your calling the digital sound fuzzy based on this rendering thereof... :/
YES! Rearrangement music sounds better (in almost every case) graphics looks fantastic with bright colors and less dithering! And game have additional content and save ram feature as well!
Oh, the moment I saw "Mega Man", I had a BAD feeling... but sighed seeing it was Wily Wars. I HATE that port. Not even the disliked Anniversary Collection (most especially the GCN version) pissed me off anywhere near as much. I played the Genesis Mini version and when M2 couldn't save that version. To date, I'll never understand why a lot of MM fans online defend Wily Wars. Is it because America initially missed it?
Mega Man: Wily Wars did have a save feature, but in the US this game was only available through Sega Channel, so each time you turned the power off, the game got wiped off from the console, thus if you wanted to access the Wily Tower, you'd have to beat the three games in one sitting! Also Ninja Gaiden had a Turbografx 16 port, which puts the SNES port to shame
The ct and ff ports onto the psx from snes were torture. Your loading times in ct on psx were lightning fast compared to mine. Even the battle animation in ct and ff6 were noticeably slower. If you’d never played dm on SNES, you might not notice. Maybe. But the rhythms of gameplay in those games are ingrained into me, and the psx versions were sadistic torture- even before factoring in load times.
I often forget that the Master System existed thanks for showcasing its games they looked really cool! That wii game also looked really cool. if they simply didn't have the waggle it would have been way better because IR controls were cool and underrated.
What are some games you feel are best played on a weaker console?

There's no way the entire ROM was loaded into RAM, though. Chrono Trigger came on a 4 MB cartridge, twice as big as the PlayStation's main memory.
The screams of anguish overlaid onto Castle of Illusion hit different
Sending characters to hell makes the Mickey game way cooler than it really is 😂
So much for Mickey's approach to violence being more family-friendly.
18:59 On the Game Gear falling off screen in the 2nd jungle level does not kill you instead you free-fall with the screen scrolling back. You might end up on something deadly. The same is true for the Commodore 64 version.
@5:15 The definitive version of Chrono Trigger is the DS version.

Always loving your content, crazy I didn’t know of you sooner however I have watched just about all episodes. Pretty addictive maaan
Man, this channel and AVGN were the only remaining channel about retro gaming that were still around. Please keep it up
There's also the "behind the code" guy. Pretty fun.
There are others. But with less subscribers. There is one channel that does play through a of arcade games and every computer and system that is before the first PlayStation.
Classic Game Room used to be the jam too but UA-cam screwed Mark and his crew. 😥
Retrobird is pretty good too, and sharopolis
Irate Gamer is still around but that's like saying an itchy rash is still around.
I absolutely LOVE this channel
Amazing that the Wii U version runs at only 30fps, while looking worse than the 60fps original!
@@3dmarth haha you're right, i forgot about that. That's even worse.
16:39 I am absolutely one of the people who extol the virtues of 8-bit Sonic over the 16-bit versions.
Sunday game sack..this is a god send every week. My chore day goes much better because of it. Thanks bro.
I can't believe Chrono Trigger got a first time mention on Game Sack
They talk about it on earlier SNES episodes
Still awake at 3am and see a new GameSack video. Score.
The 32X version of Virtua Fighter is impressive, it actually looks way better than Fight for Life for the Jaguar a 64 bit system
But Virtua Fighter doesn’t have that kick ass opening song “oooh yeah! Fight for life” like the Jaguar game. Only the sophisticated 64 bit system could handle that song…
@@huejass79Right? The wimpy 32X can’t handle the far more superior sound of the 64 bit Jaguar
Yasss new Game Sack. Please bring Dave back for a new 'Tude Sack. So many modern games, especially in the indie genre, that have so much radical tude.
Bob Cornhole would approve of this episode
As a UK resident, seeing the skit feels very strange since we actually had a TV show called GamesMaster around the same time. circa 1992.
I think I might sue 1992 UK.
LOOL "gwee-lee"... I learned from the FGC that a lot of people also said "gilly" A lot of usernames/gamertags use that
Thanks for another video Joe. I've discovered so many great retro games by watching your videos.
I found replaying Wily Wars on the NSO that the lag has been mitigated quite well. The NES versions still are better but I found myself enjoying the NSO version quite a bit
26:25
Hmm...that's interesting, I never knew that since I've never played the Saturn version, they fixed that in the PC port, where they added the tournament mode and the extra camera options, as well as added Watch Mode, where you can see the AI duke it out with...itself, I'd say the definitive way to play VF Remix is the PC port.
Always look forward to a new exciting episode of Gay Sack!
🤨
gross
My apologies, I didn't realize I wasn't already subscribed, kinda weird since I have been watching these videos for forever now. Anyway, I'm a new subscriber now.
Yeah!!! Thank you Game-Master™️ !
Star wars the force unleashed wii/ps2 might as well be on this list.
It says a lot that that version is one that got remastered instead of the PS3/360 version.
@@zaneseibert which one is on Steam?
@KasumiRINA The PS3/360 version. The remaster only came out on Switch.
Same thing with Yoshi's Island, better on SNES. And Super Mario 64, the N64 original is better than the Nintendo DS version.
DKC is also on Game Boy Color
@@videostash413 I know, but it's even more downgraded. It's still impressive for an 8bit system, but no real competition for SNES and GBA.
Hmmm I thought they tweaked them for GBA and added a few more things and quality of life improvements.. I'm gonna have to go back to revisit them
@Mintcar923 indeed, they added a few little things like bonus games so far I remember, but I find the SNES originals overall better, mainly in graphics and sound.
"Seattle, Washington, D.C." - That was probably my favorite skit, Gay Master!
That's so bizarre how a console known for slow down in the NES would have noticeably less slowdown than the console supposed to have blast processing in the Genesis Mega Man ports
It often comes down to the programers and skill with a particular console.
Capcom never tried with their genesis releases.
@@brendanroberts1310 Extra graphical effects too. Bowser's Inside Story has framedrops on O3DS that aren't present on the DS original for that reason, despite the fact that even the O3DS ARM11 is leagues above the DS' ARM7.
I guess you never heard of optimization.
@@Super_Croptendo They could optimizee when they wanted Strider on the genesis is a good example of that. But most of their ports to the genesis where sub standard.
That video sounds hot
“Futuristic 90s sheen”
Regarding Chrono Trigger. The best version is actually on Nintendo DS. You get the anime cut scenes but no loading times. My preferred way is playing the DS version on a Wii U hooked up to a CRT.
I actually prefer the ps1 version
@@ajsingh4545 the loading times are jarring though
I think it's better on the Snes hooked up to a crt
And the game is complete on the DS, with Beyond Time's Eclipse area and Dream Devourer boss, completing the story of Magus and Schala
How do you play a ds game on the wii u?
Joe's rant about sending enemies to hell in the Master System Mickey Mouse game is hilarious. 🤣
I love Gweely
after completing CT on the PSX DOZENS of time it was a HUGE delight to play it without loading times on the SNES
Whats wrong with being master of the gaze? Sounds awesome.
I'm surprised that Dwayne from Texas didn't send a letter to the Game Master, 1992 would have been long before he died after contracting the plague...
Batman Returns on Master System is better than the Genesis
I love how gamesack upload past midnight.
errrrrmmmmm, have you played the 32X version of Virtua Fighter on _actual_ hardware?
As it's the ONLY game I legally, physically, have in my 32X library, I SWEAR the samples are more crystal clear than 'depicted' on this compilation.
Apologies for bringing this oversight up, but my experience cringed at your calling the digital sound fuzzy based on this rendering thereof... :/
Yes I have it. Compared to the Saturn samples they are a bit fuzzy, especially when you play the games back to back. Certainly not BAD or anything.
I'd love to see the Timesplitters games featured on an episodes someday soon. Next underrated games ep?
Chrono Trigger was the first RPG I replayed many times. The game was definitely a turning point for old SquareSoft.
Hope you continue to do the game master skit 😂 one of my favorites lol
No, sorry...Wily Wars is WAY better!
YES! Rearrangement music sounds better (in almost every case) graphics looks fantastic with bright colors and less dithering! And game have additional content and save ram feature as well!
@@colos3284 Ew, no. No to both of you! LOL it's all good though. We can all enjoy what we enjoy.
That ending skit was just as I remember the tips from the pros back in the day!
🧐😕
Thanks Joe I love this and you!!!
The dying and being sent to hell screams part was brilliant
I often forget that the Master System existed thanks for showcasing its games they looked really cool!
That wii game also looked really cool. if they simply didn't have the waggle it would have been way better because IR controls were cool and underrated.
Enemies screaming in Master System Castle of Illusion fit the game perfectly, well done 😂
6:25 We're so spoiled with SSD consoles/PC. What a lovely time
