Couldn't agree more. I own an M10-M as well in addition to the M9-M. Both are great, but the M10-M is really proving itself as the dominant monochrom cam. Not sure why people are so anti-monochrome cameras. They are incredible at what they do. Also, great, comprehensive review and great images to go with it. Thanks

These are awesome. I opted for the Q2 Monochrome myself but the results are very similar despite being different sensors. I encourage people (like you said) to be patient with either b&w camera should they buy one. It takes a little bit of time to understand it, and now I’m hooked. I’ve never enjoyed shooting a digital camera as much as I do now. I use my orange filter during the day and take it off during the night.

Thank you! & I agree with you on your points. You really do have to give it time. I think an investment of that size you always second guess it but when you can work thru those first few months I think it really clicks in and starts to make sense. The mono for me as well has totally shifted my idea of digital photography! I’m happy you have been loving the Q2!

Definitely glad I found your video. Been wanting an monochrome camera for a year now. Best experience I got before was using Panasonic’s L Monochrome picture profile on my old Lumix G9. But a true monochrome camera is completely next level. I believe that you can really play and work with light a lot more and make it the main focus of an image when it comes to black and white photography. And that kind of photography not only challenges me more but inspires me more and really helps me put more of my own soul into my photography.
So I may actually be getting an M10 Monochrom in a couple of months once I sell off a couple pieces of gear and cameras I don’t use anymore. Let’s just say selling all the gear and stuff I don’t use anymore will easily help pay for a M10M.
Fingers crossed all goes to plan but with the arrival of the SL3 coming within a year and me wanting to upgrade from my Leica SL typ 601 I may have to prioritize that money towards the SL3.
I’ll try to rent an M10M just to experience it and see if I’ll truly love it. While your review and images help I think it’s still best to experience it for myself and help me make a final decision if I’ll buy it or not.

I had a M9 monochrome and I found the that the camera was fantastic at rendering black skin tones. There was a Spanish guy that I followed on Facebook that made a lot of terrific portraits in Jamaica and generally just made the M240 monochrome camera with a 35mm summilux asph really sing. It was the only lens that he used. Others have gotten great results with other lenses such as an old 50cm that was great for natural light portraits. It can be a great camera but I tried and tried to get landscape photos with my monochrome M9 and just couldn’t get into a good flow with it. Motorcycles and their chrome also were an exceptional subject for the monochrome. I traded it in because of the sensor issues and have enjoyed the SL with M lenses. The SL has a monochrome function for jpegs and for viewing that I use from time to time but I don’t see myself ever buying another M, monochrome or otherwise.

Shooting with a M is special. Shooting monochrom is special. So I gladly believe that shooting with a M monochrom is more adapted to my taste than a Q2 monochrom. I just bought a M10M in addition to my M262. I'm sure it will make a great combo with my Elmarit 28 or my Summilux 50. And I've just added a Summarit 90 f:2.4. I don't need anything more to enjoy shooting.

Daft question. How do you know if the effects that you are getting are either the Lens or the Sensor? I know I have had vastly different results on a camera by using different lenses, which can come down to the lens coatings or if they are producing a vintage look like the Voigts Classic. Just interested. I love the idea of the mono sensor, but I have had mixed reviews regarding the sensor quality - ie white spots on new sensors.

Why are you shooting with a monochrome instead of a color M10, then converting the images to black and white? And why the M and not the Q2 mono?

    • @braxtonmiller7502
      @braxtonmiller7502  3 роки тому +2

      Good question.
For not just using the m10: the m10 Monochrom sensor is from the ground up rebuilt and different than the m10. The color filter array was completely removed so this camera measures light in luminance. So the M10M allows for better iso performance and more detail. I personally don’t need color, I sold my m10 p to get this. It renders unlike any other of the digital color M’s. However if one needs color, shooting on the m10 works just fine and allows for more flexibility.
And Q2 vs M10m: I prefer the M10 mono over the Q2 mono for the main fact of glass. I prefer M glass over the Q2 28mm. I also have a lot of m glass that I like. So I’m already bought into the m bodies. They both function very similarly. So lenses are the determining factor in what one chooses id say.

Great video, probably the best Leica M10M review I have watched. It positivity separates itself from other videos which always try to sell fastest M lenses as absolutely needed. Also great that the example photos reveal clearly why for your style of photography high ISO is so beneficial in monochrome. As film shooter I admit that many of those photos wouldn't been able to take with film easily. Hope that a new firmware at some point resolves the start up time issue with the camera.

With digital stuff I think it matters a little less however the way the mono sensor works I do think they still make a difference. I did always keep a regular clear UV filter from Leica on my lenses! But that’s more for front element protection honestly.

The need for fast lenses is still there. Because if you want to have the distinctive character of a Noctilux wide open for example in portraiture. Thats the main reason why people buy a Noctilux or something similar. Noctilux are mostly used by portrait photographers. Thats a point you missed. I have the M9 Monochrom, which came out in 2012. Even with that Mono there is no need for fast lens in the sense you have curated it.

I am a professional photographer (documentary) and use a Q1 and an M9. When I need to do an event shoot -rarely- I use a Nikon D850 and a Fuji X-T2. And when I am doing a precision job in the studio, a shot that will require perfection, I use an S2 (and a Fuji GFX 100 for what the S2 does not reach). With all due respect to wedding photographers… they have a very hard job that I would never do, it is absurd to use a Leica or a medium format camera. What you need is a Sony or a Nikon Z9. Some use them to differentiate themselves, but they aren’t using the right tools.

    • @tor2919

Nonsense. I shot a wedding with a Hasselblad 500CM. 12 frames a roll, manual focus and much slower than any 35mm camera. You can use any camera for weddings if you have a clear vision that you communicate to the couple beforehand.

Thank you! I have used it with the flash on and also with a flash off camera. I, unfortunately, didn't include many taken with either set up because they were more "test shots" However, the image at 18:29 was with off camera flash, and the image at 19:21 was with on camera flash. I use the Leica SF60 because I like staying native with flashes. I also have used the SF240 as well and that is another fantastic option for a flash. The mono doesn't really ever need a flash to be honest because of its low light ability, but when you want the look it does a great job with it.

    I was on a fence between m10m and m10r.
B&W rangefinder was so different from my Sony.
I ended up getting m10r and no regrets. I love m10r, but m10m is still on the back of my mind.
It would be awesome to see comparison between them.
I also saw that you shoot s3 in b&w. What is your feeling about image difference between them? Tonality is one of things that medium format good at, but it looks like m10m should be pretty good at that too.

    • @braxtonmiller7502
      @braxtonmiller7502  3 роки тому +1

You can’t go wrong with the m10R, the color is so nice from that camera! I’d say very similar to the S3. I’ll be doing a video on it soon!
I think for me, I’ve shot most of my cameras either with Kodak trix or converting to black and white anyways. So a monochrom made a lot of sense to me! I think if you like using color at all an M10M can be excessive for those not in my position.
And yes I do shoot the S3 in b&w, I have come to really love it’s color tho. So main differences will be on the ground floor the sensors themselves, they measure light in very different ways. The M10M is strictly based on luminance so you will naturally get a closer feel to a black and white film stock. The S3 measures thru the color filter array sensor layer but forsure has more dynamic range. That being said, the iso capabilities are very limited. Top end pushing it, the best it’ll do is 1600 while keeping out grain. The M10M gets great dynamic range and tonality even to 12.5k iso, but not as good as the S3 at its base iso 100 to 400ish. So that extended iso range can be a big game changer when comparing them. The S3 does have the advantage of having the “medium format” look while the M10M feels kinda closer to a big 35mm negative.

Nice video! One thing I would add re not needing "fast lenses:"
One of the great capabilities of a fast lens is to isolate a subject. Of course, if the primary picture-taking style of the user does not include the need to do that, then it is of no consequence. But one relatively fast 50 or 90 can be very useful in that regard.

Game changer. I had an M10 but the M10M eclipsed it completely. Takes a while to get it to sing, but that's the case with all digital Ms I have had. Will check out your point about 6 bit lenses, but I have got gorgeous shots with the Canon 50mm f1.2 LTM and an 85 Nikkor f1.4 Ais, as well as my 24 lux which just about lives on the camera most days.

I have a Typ 246 Monochrom. I also started with black and white film shooting and did my own darkroom work. Shooting with the Monochrom took me back to that special place. Seeing the images you want in my mind before shooting then having them appear in monochrome on the back screen is not unique to this body of course. Yet I found that I take fewer and arguably better photos with it because I am in the black and white artistic mindset from the get go. That is what I overpaid for. Haha. For what it is worth, I also had buyer's remorse and contemplated selling it but then I bought the 35mm Summicron and found my niche. For me it works. First time I have ever liked shooting a 35mm lens. Thanks for the vid.

No offence but I don't see better B&W rendering with the M10 (at $6,000 used on ebay) than I do from my Fuji XE1 ($300 on ebay).

None taken! I think you are onto my point that I made in this video. Photography and cameras in general are so subjective. There is no real best black and white camera. Whatever the individual views as best is best. Appreciate you joining into the discussion!

If you are looking at the results uploaded onto UA-cam or Facebook then you are right...but in print or on a high resolution monitor right from the RAW image... you might.... but if the XE1 makes you happy....that’s great.

Thank you for a very nice video and the photos. Q - how do you handle the blown highlights problem with the camera. I know one can under expose via ERV or just expose for the highlights and then bring up the shadows in post but the metering seems very sensitive to this compared to other high quality mirrorless cameras and this ended up driving me nuts. I found the M10R had the same d problem when using the rangefinder.

Love the concept of monochrom, love the simplicity of Leica bodies.
Two reasons why I dont get one:
    1) bodies susceptible to digital rot like any digital camera
    2) blown hilights (easily fixable if Leica did what Fuji does with their DR400 mode)
    I use a summilux 50mm and a 28 summicron on a fuji body.
Fuji’s dr400 mode gives you about 3 stops of hilight retention (but you have to shoot at iso 640 and above). Works in RAW & jpg
Fuji’s xtrans sensor gives you a filmic grain, not noise. I rented a leica m11 and shot it in the same venue as the fuji. The files had a color noise inferior to the fuji’s when shot at iso 1600-12,800.
Also, Fuji’s ability to edit highlight and shadow tone curves give you a filmic rolloff instead of a clipy digital sudden falloff.
Fuji’s film sims offer amazing preset options and customizations.
Fuji’s color chrome effect and blue color chrome effect reduces the luminance in highly saturated colors that tend to blow out in digital sensors: again giving it a filmic appearance.
Fuji’s have a built in evf, eliminating a $700 leica accessory that eats up a flash shoe spot.
1/10 the price of a leica body.
Because of new fuji bodies are introduced every 2 - 3 years, the used market has plenty of fuji bodies with plenty of life left in them.
If you can afford it, get leica M glass and mate it to a fuji body: xpro 3 if you want a (almost) rangefinder experience, or an xt3 for a truly retro camera with amazing dials for control.
If you can’t afford leica glass, get a fuji x100v (it has a 35mm equiv lens. Get the wide angle conversion lens to widen to 28!
I really love the direction the m11 is taking leica with the modernized design. But they really need to take a page out of fuji’s handbook.
Shooting underexposed images because digital sensors are what they are when you can circumvent it in software as fuji did is inexcusable.
If Leica did that AND beef up the Maestro to keep up with 60mp, I’d deal with the digital rot and get a limited edition safari and a monochrom.
In the meantime, film leica bodies are the only leicas that are timeless!
    Thanks for reading and posting❤

This kills me. Fuji cameras have a mode called DR400 that, internally under exposes the shot, then automatically brings up the mid tones and highlights.
Basically what you do in Lightroom
But automatically in the camera. Also works in Raw.
This way you have. Normal looking jpg at the back of the camera and not u defe posed images because you “corrected for the right hand side of the histogram”. That’s not photography.
It’s all software. Leica can do this tomorrow in software, for any Leica….

They…. Have. They have a highlight retention mode they added in a firmware update like a while ago.

Leicas are not about bytes, luminance values and all that chip jargon. If you need to justify a Leica with a tech lexicon, it’s beat you sell your Leica.
