Traveled this route many, many times and it’s always a pleasure to see our beautiful coastline. Get a chance, go to Santa Barbara by train and that too is a thrilling ride. Comfortable, no hassle with the LA traffic and enjoy the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

@4vsbs2 The very beauty of train trips in the US is that you see the back of everything. You see the view you never see from cars and cannot see from planes 30,000 in the air.
I hadn't been on a train in over 50 years and was in San Diego this January. I got on at Oceanside and took it to LA then up the coast to Oakland and a bus to San Francisco. It really was fun. Coming back, I got to see what we passed in the dark on the way up.

I remember Riding The Pacific Surfliner from Solana Beach to Santa Barbara as Northbound 769 and Return to Solana Beach from Santa Barbara as Southbound 774 with My Grandfather back on April 10-11 2003. It was Great Train Ride indeed. Heck, I ever rode with The Engineer in The Cab Car as Well!
Just an added bit of info. San Diego County is double tracking from the OC County line all the way down to downtown SD. In addition, they will add a platform at Del Mar Fairgrounds for people to attend the SD County Fair AND the horse racing. No more having to depart at Solana Beach & take a shuttle bus to the fairgrounds. It is a few yrs away but it is coming!!
I would take that train from Lancaster and spend a few days att beach, fairgrounds and horse races. But I guess I gotta wait for covid to pass. Bummer.

Another great video and thanks for posting it. That Station at San Diego looks as much like a church, as a Railway building. Very nicely designed. Jack.
Nice trip down memory lane for me, I used to get on at Oceanside and take the train to LA, never saw south of Oceanside on this trip so enjoyed that very much
I have been very fortunate enough to be able to take this journey several times. The first part of the trip from Los Angeles is interesting. And once out of the industrial area of Los Angeles, the journey is extremely beautiful.
Rode the Surfliner last year. took the Disney Cruise out of San Diego, so we headed over to Santa Fe station and headed to Disneyland Anaheim. We weren’t in a rush and I simply adore trains. My husband indulges my love for travel and bought us business class tickets, we were on the second floor with surf side windows. We brought snacks with us and had a little cocktail and we jiggle joggled up the coast to Anaheim. Which is a newer modern station unlike the historical Santa Fe Station. The ride to the Grand Californian from the Anaheim station was 15-20 minutes. I highly recommend the trip.
Excellent. I felt as if I was your co-traveller. The entire journey is shot so beautifully by you that one gets the actual feel of the places while watching the video. The blue waters of the Pacific are so soothing for the eyes in the midst of the concrete world all around the nearby stations. Thanks for the lovely experience..
The surfliner is legit my favorite train because I ride it almost every time I go on a train. Also my local station is Fullerton which has a lot of railfanners! Just amazing service.
Sadly, Anaheim doesn't have a large handful of railfanners like Fullerton does. I mean, why can't no one come to Anaheim to see the trains going by (either at ARTIC or on Santa Ana Street)?
I travelled from LA to SAN on 22 nd September, 2022 . Took the 3.10 pm train . Your narration and videos are excellent. There is something special traveling by train near the ocean than by road .. The closest point of the ocean matches with the map and my picture as Dona point . Just to add they give snacks and beverages complimentary in business class besides a nice cafe in one of the cars serving hot snacks . All in all a memorable trip indeed and a must visit at least with kids .
Thanks for sharing, brings back old memories when I use to fly out to San Diego all the time on business, always took a few extra days just to ride the Coaster from San Diego to Oceanside, great transportation :)
Thanks for this. I live in Mohave desert Ca. But I'm from Orange and Santa Monica. I forgot how much I miss my ocean. I used to go to the beach weekly growing up. This makes me want to drive to nearest Amtrak station and get to San Clemente Beach ASAP! Last time I took the train to a Laguna Niguel to visit a friend. I miss her. I think I took Metro Link.
This is an excellent video. We took the Surfliner in June of 2015 and stayed in Old Town. We had 12 gorgeous days in CA, and this was such an amazingly beautiful trip from LA to SD.
Thank you for a great trip. We now live in Tucson, but visit San Diego again often.I love taking this trip. We usually leave from San Diego, go to L.A. for lunch across the street from Union Station on Olveira St. then get back on the train to San Diego. A great day trip.
This is an excellent video of Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner from LA's Union Station all the way down to San Diego's Santa Fe Depot. What a beautiful sight of the Pacific Ocean & the beach. I have taken this train many, many times and I felt like I was riding it again. Thanks for posting it!
I rode the Pacific Surfliner 7 times when they were called the San Diegans when they only went as far North as Los Angeles. I will be taking the Pacific Surfliner at a future time when I'm back in Southern California for a 4 day stay in the San Diego area. My trip will be round trip from San Diego to Oxnard.
Great video!! I am planning on taking the train from Los Angeles to San Diego in January. Great learning tool for me. Gives me a perspective of what to expect!!
Being a native of California all my life! I've never been on a train and can't wait to surprise my Wife for her Birthday weekend for a trip from LA to San Diego ❤️... Thank you soooo much for this video it will help me a lot! 🙏
I travel on the Pacific Surfliners from San Diego to Los Angeles & Oxnard when I’m ho,e in the San Diego area. I alternate my visits between Los Angeles & Ventura every other visit home to the San Diego area. When I go to Ventura I get off in Oxnard and take he number 6 Gold Coast Transit bus to Victoria Blue & Moon Drive to visit there in that part of Ventura. With the tracks in excellent condition, Amtrak can run the Pacific Surfliners from San Diego to Los Angeles in 90 minutes if the damned FRA would allow them to, that would maintain safety & at the same time increase ridership even more. Riding the Pacific Surfliner beats driving I-5/U.S.101 parking lots where people slow down when there is no accidents, no wet & foggy weather and no construction zones, this freeway slowing down is done on purpose.
Very cool- I rode this ride years ago in 1990 when I was in California from what was then Anaheim Stadium- which was very different then as it was an enclosed stadium then- and all to San Diego with my now deceased aunt- it was a great ride- great scenery and to see it again is PRICELESS in a tough time. Thank you for posting this- sharing this- this really made my 2020-21- thank you.

Yes, we need more trains. There are people who are afraid to fly and they have good reason. Terrorists, and if anything goes wrong with the plane it's usually the end of your life, and it's a horrible way to die. If anything goes wrong with a train, you just transfer to a bus. I know there are train wrecks, but they don't compare to the carnage of a plane crash.
@@carolhutchinson7763 The problem is too many plane advocates , that claim flying is safer than driving , I would rather be in a car crash with seat belts , airbags, etc , than a plane crash .
@@Jay-vr9ir: So true. People who think planes are the best way to travel should see the video recreation of TWA Flight 800 and see what horrors the passengers went through, or read about PSA Flight 182 where the people knew they were going to die for almost a minute and a couple of people lowered the back staircase and jumped out, resulting in one of them getting his head pulverized through a car window. No thanks to possibly being burned alive, falling 35,000 feet to the ground or even being ground up in an engine after being sucked out (yes, it's happened.) If everything goes OK, you have endless waiting, being searched and being packed in with a bunch of people and wailing babies like sardines. I'm also done driving for hours and hours and staying in crappy expensive motels too. You can get a small room with a bed on a train. Try doing that on a plane; there are only a couple of airlines that have that and it costs around $28,000. 😱
I used to travel by Amtrack from Newark to Manhattan, Penn Station everyday. And later from Chicago to many places. Amtrack is a safe, fast, comfortable and cheap option.
Truly excellent video. You stated a purpose, and stuck to it, with great production values regarding continuity, supplemental rolling stock footage, minimization of reflections, preservation of audio, horizon dedication, mix of uproute and downroute POV. Very attentive to detail. Having made that drive dozens of times, I found myself realizing where the tracks were in relation to a southbound drive, and regained perspective. I would have highlighted some of the classic passenger cars seen leaving 8th St Yards, quite beautiful, and maybe thrown in more supers of exact grade crossings or background info, just a quick graphic. But really well-done and enjoyable!
This video is skipping and missing an important segment which is after solana beach before arriving in old town. Maybe this segment is skipped because it is uneventful With no good scenery. But it should’ve been kept just to illustrate how incredibly slow this train becomes during that section. When I slate say slow I am talking about 5 mph maybe 10. And it goes on for a considerable stretch of time. I can understand why to a large extent because the train tracks wind their way through an upper he’ll pass and maybe it winding so much makes this necessary. But this eats up a tremendous amount of time and I pretty sure extends the duration of this trip about one hour longer than it needs to be. They need to make a goal of changing the path of the tracks changing the tracks themselves or whatever they need to do to make sure that this train is always moving at least 50 mph between stations. Sometimes this is not possible in downtown Los Angeles because it is making away for freight trains also so that part I understand. But right now this is I believe a 3 1/2 hour train ride from downtown Los Angeles to downtown San Diego which I think is ridiculous and is not going to get people out of their cars except for Sunday evening or some other periods of time where interstate five traffic is beyond ridiculous and then finally it actually becomes practical to take the train. This Windee stretch appears after you have passed Salina Beach as I said and they need to lay a different path and get a straight path to downtown San Diego without the winding track to allow that train to really move fast. When you look at this video even when they are missing the specific part I am mentioning you can still tell that at the salon a beach the sections they do show are noticeably slower than the train passing through Irvine or South Orange County or northern San Diego County. If they could just/F1 hour off this trip it would get people to ride this train more even if it is not a high-speed train.
I took this train in 2014 from LA to San Juan Capistrano. I had the same harsh sounding conductor! I have rode all the Amtrak routes in the West and I thought his announcements were a put off for people riding the train for the first time. Otherwise, great video! Thanks for posting.
ha, I stowed away on that train once to SD, unfortunately it dead ended in Ocean side due to track problems, I was able to get a bus into SD for $2 tho.
Great video, this is my second time to see it. On May 27, 2017 I rode round trip from San Diego to Oxnard to visit the Oxnard/Ventura area for the day, I enjoyed my Pacific Surfliner trip very much. It was very relaxing, comfortable, enjoyable and I didn't have to deal with traffic at all. I will be going home to the San Diego area on October 5, 2017 for the Discovery Day weekend, I will be riding the Pacific Surfliner to & From Los Angeles & ride Metrolink to the San Fernando area for the day. The Pacific Surfliner/Coast Starlight route is my most favorite Amtrak route & I travel long distance by Amtrak & in Southern California I will be riding the Pacific Surfliners more often between San Diego, Los Angeles & Oxnard.
Road this route when I enlisted in the US Navy from Los Angeles. Two other recruits and I were given our enlistment packages at the Los Angeles Armed Forces Enlistment and Examination Station on Wilshire Blvd, road a city bus to Union Station, and headed south to the Recruit Training Command at the Naval Training Center, San Diego. Wonder how many other Navy recruits went to boot camp in this manner?
I have taken the train from Los Angeles to Anaheim for my trip to Disneyland back in the day. Funnily enough, I'm also staying in Anaheim through the hotel at Disney.
Viewers who notice the train passing all the cars on "The 5" between San Clemente and Oceanside will want to know that, because the Surf Line is ATS (automatic train stop) equipped, much of the line from Del Mar to Irvine is cleared for 90 MPH, one of the fastest track segments in the USA. Amtrak regularly hits 90 between Oceanside and the 60 MPH curve just south of San Clemente. They will sometimes also unleash the throttle on the Carlsbad to Encinitas tangent. Metrolink never exceeds 79 MPH by much north of Oceanside, and Coaster stops too often to get much past 70, even south of Carlsbad Villagr. Still, 40 miles in 65 minutes, with Sorrento Grade (25 MPH) thrown in, is sharp passenger railroading. Lastly, in a couple years, the San Diego Trolley will be running north of Old Town, which will provide great train watching as Amtrak and Coaster will climb the first several miles of Rose Canyon on a brand new alignment.
A too excellent video!!!! About the only thing missing was some Chanteys' or Venturers' music from about 21:24 to 28:00! LOL! Again, a excellent video!!!! Thanks for posting!

If everything goes OK, you have endless waiting, being searched and being packed in with a bunch of people and wailing babies like sardines. I'm also done driving for hours and hours and staying in crappy expensive motels too. You can get a small room with a bed on a train. Try doing that on a plane; there are only a couple of airlines that have that and it costs around $28,000. 😱
When I head to vidcon this summer I’ll definitely catch a ride on an Amtrak train.
I was there in 1979 ans 1198, what a LOVELY station!
I went to LA this year but did not get the chance to do this train trip. Definitely on the list for my next trip to LA.
I'm going on the Pacific Surfliner to San Diego this August.
I've taken that trip, it was great.

It's very good I work for many years as n Fireman in PE.thanks so much.Bye.
Welche Sauberkeit im Bahnhof los Angels. Spitze .Dankeschön 🌻🌹
Thank you I enjoyed watching your videos
I do not live in CA but about 200 miles from Chicago- I had to drive about 50 miles to get to Galesburg, ILL you are fortunate.
I used to travel by Amtrack from Newark to Manhattan, Penn Station everyday. And later from Chicago to many places. Amtrack is a safe, fast, comfortable and cheap option.
Love this train. Hate when it's delayed often and unreliable at times. Still great for leisurely trip.
Be doing our first trip in about 20 days if it’s anything like your video it’ll be the right of our life thank you
Best Train vids on youtube
I'm goin on the surfliner. This Friday tony
You have a nice voice delivery and interesting commentary. Amtrak could use an on board announcer like you!
What a lovely trip.
Great video and editing. Enjoyed the informative, but not intrusive, commentary. Thank you!
VERY VERY GOOD VIDEO...TANK U. !!! MUCH
