    It's no secret that I love the gear the Ruffwear produces. I'm not sponsored by them. Just a loyal customer who is happy to invest in gear that truly holds up. Some of my gear from them is more than a decade old, and still totally functional (though well-loved!).
    Previously, Ruffwear has had a policy that only certain organizations could buy their service dog gear. Now, they've changed their policy and it's available to private trainers and owner-trainers alike.
    Do I own a ton of service dog gear? Kinda. Did I purchase this anyway? You betcha!
    My plan is to use this vest as my "incognito vest" AKA, sometimes when I go out in public to do personal stuff with my friends and family, I don't want my logo on everything, and sometimes for video shoots for other projects, I want non-logoed gear. This vest is perfect for that!
    So, this video is my review of the Ruffwear policy change and Ruffwear's new Access ID Service Dog Vest, in case you're looking for a lightweight, professional looking vest for your service dog. If you have mobility, dexterity, or vision challenges, I would highly recommend this vest for its ease of use!

      I’ve been using other Ruffwear harnesses for years and just sewing patches on. However, the magnetic clip would be a lifesaver. However, I hate having a leash attached to a collar since it is a safety issue. I can’t figure out where I would attach a leash onto this vest. What are other people doing?

    I actually always add an ID holder to my vests because that’s where I put my “Handler faints, it’s normal - do not call 911 - do not interfere, I am trained for this. I.C.E. Remove card for emergency medical info” cards. I know there are patches that say that, but I don’t want to take up valuable real estate on my vest with those big patches when I really need that space for “do not pet” signage! I like to keep things pretty visually simple, so my vests say service dog, have some sort of “do not distract” patch, and then an ID holder where I can write those emergency instructions on a smaller card. That way the information is there, but not the most prominent thing.
    I also just purchased the Ruffwear vest, and I love it! I think it will be really nice for the summertime because of the lightweight design.

    Love the magnetic hook. Quick on, quick off, and it doesn’t randomly come undone. Serenity did an 8K and several lay downs and in/outs of the car and magnetic clasps remained attached. We were sent the wrong color, but that’s okay, ordered another so we have one of each.

      @@DoggyU The magnetic clasps are also easier for our grandson to do than the clasps. Since this fits more like a harness than a vest/cape there’s also no sliding to the side. We have a custom cape and a mass produced cape with custom embroidery and both have a tendency to slide to one side or the other. We don’t have that issue here. Had our local embroiderer look at the vest and we decided to have her do some patches rather than trying to embroider directly onto the vest.

Unfortunately the main reason I need a service dog is a rarer chronic illness so there isn’t an organization for me. This makes me so happy that they're taking into account owner trainers.

    Please help me to understand why Ada doesn’t have ANY kind of standard for service dogs? No real registration and or training. This allows anyone or everyone to just say my dog is a service dog and they are out with no training or understanding of k9 manners. If you at least register and get a silly ID that at least helps stores and restaurants to know they are at least registered. There needs to be testing and a true registry I used to train therapy dogs for the Delta Society. There was training testing and certifications, so I just don’t understand the ADA just letting people run wild. Please help me understand.

      It will honestly be a moot point very soon anyway. When companies start making things like Boston Dynamics Robo Dog affordable all us service dog handlers will probably switch over. Navigating the world with a living dog is difficult, mainly because people think the dog somehow is also a pet and in public people will not leave you alone. With a robo dog no one will want to pet it, no one will comment on its boots or goggles, no one will complain to management because they allergic to dogs. No breed specific legislation like is in Denver. Before any meaningful change is made to the ADA I imagine service dogs will be a thing of the past.

      which is still an adolescent. When can you determine what time is the right time of day to train your service dog in training with more distractions? I try not to do a lot of expectations and new locations. I do not want to set up Freja for failure since she is already amazing. A lot of people misunderstand Freya when I tell people who let their kids come up to her and pet her. I feel bad because a lot of people do not
      understand the concept of service dog or working dog. People think she is not friendly. I feel bad because Freja is amazing.

      Wait wait wait! How does any one drown in dog gear? That isn't a problem!
      Just kidding. I know what you mean. My problem is I want to spend every dollar on dog stuff, even if I don't have any immediate use for some of it. I'm like: but this harness could fit my next dog in 10 years, or this leash could be grate for another dog that I'll have sometime in the future. It really just boils down to I like it, and I want it. Luckily, I have a partner who reminds me how much stuff I have and frequently ask if I really need to get more. That kind of keeps me in check.
      But I'm definitely going to see if I can get one of these service dog vests, assuming it will fit my future standard rat terrier who will be trained in medical response tasks.

      It does not (or at least to my knowledge). Traditionally, red has been used quite a bit in service dog work, but ultimately it's handler-preference :)

    I'm having trouble fining a harness/vest to fit my great dane who uas an extremely deep chest and uncommong girth/neck ratios. Any suggestions? ☺️
    Note: He is currently a puppy (3.5 months 45lbs) but I anticipate having this same issue throughout his growth journey.

      Maybe look for harnesses made for greyhounds? They tend to have odd measurements. You may have to learn to sew or buy a custom vest.
      I'm sure there's other dane service dog handlers on here or even *sigh* service dog reddit if you're desperate.

    I use my dog for counter balance so I have to have a handle. I really like that unifly guide dog vest and the handle but I will continue to spend my $$ where I can get the needed handle. I do say it will happen sooner than later. And, I splurged for one of those fake ID's and have had no admittance issues since. And a patch that says mobility dog. I look like I walk fine, until I end up on the floor due to balance issues so 'they' mostly don't think I have an issue. And I have even been accused of faking falling.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  2 місяці тому +1

      Not sure if you were saying that you'd spend your money on other gear, but to clarify to others reading, the Unifly harness is a guide harness and not a handle for counter balance or support. Using it as such would potentially injure your dog.
      As far as IDs go, purchasing IDs and showing them to gain access at stores can unintentionally harm other service dog users. Basically, when you show an ID that is not required for access, the business thinks that all SD handlers should show an ID, which is not in line with ADA regulations.

      @@DoggyU I did not show it for a long time when I realized I had been scammed. and I don't get it out until after I argue and show them my cards with fed law on them. Then I ask if they are looking for the fake id card that they could get for their pig if they paid the money for it. And I thought counter balance was not to put pressure on the dog, but to lift up lightly just to secure your balance.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  2 місяці тому

      @@dellamonroe8814 re: counter balance - yes that's correct. But this handle is not designed for that, just like a typical guide handle isn't either. The harness is not secure enough for upward pressure/sideways movement, and the handle is not secure either, in that it moves up and down instead of being a static handle. It's also at an angle. If you're looking for counter balance, you'll want to get a harness specifically designed for that task. You'll notice some harnesses will have two handles. One is for counter balance while the other is for guide work, as they function differently. Hopefully that helps!

    I can easily tell you what prompted this move. Money. The fake service dog industry is huge. The company is out for money. I will never buy another thing for that company ever again. I know they won't care but that's all right. I can at least live with myself

    Would it be illegal for them to require proof of disability prior to selling the vest? Like the same documents a landlord would need, perhapse - I really don't like that fakes are going to start using these, and degrade the reputation of these as legitimate service dog vests. Program dogs wearing these will be more suspect to suspicion once the vest gets popular.
    I would be more than happy to provide the same proof my landlord requires to get it, if it keeps fakes from getting them as much.

      There's lots of "official" looking gear available now without Ruffwear's gear hitting the market. Everything under the sun is available at this very moment if someone truly wants to impersonate a disabled person/SD.
