    Finally! I was debating what to do with this bike. My original plan was to kit it out with Deore XT but in the back of my mind I kept thinking... is that a waste? In the end I chose to clean up, restore etc all the original components and add a couple of tweaks.
    It’s all come together really well. It was a fight to get it all apart mind you! A lot of the components were seized in place and took a bit of persuasion to remove. Fortunately putting it back together was a lot easier.
    Unfortunately that wheelset has let me down. I’m positive the freehub has broken or sticky pawls inside and it’s causing the skip. I’m going to do some experimenting and try and fix it... fingers crossed.

    You have a good eye for what should be done for an old neglected bike. It's amazing what soap, water and some polishing can reveille. Looks good.

    Great Restoration!! I remember when these frames came out and thinking how radical the I-beam top to and raised chain stays were. Like seeing a spaceship with wheels in 1991. I still have a pair of those self energizing breaks, they always worked great. Nice work!

    A unique piece of industrial design . Would look good hanging beneath a Zeppelin type airship ready for use.

    Yep. Orange and Pink do not match.
    A 1X will probably help keep the chain on. And, the chainstay from getting scratched up.
    Looks good though. A piece of British Engineering History.

    Glad you stuck with original components, and the freehub didn’t look too happy when you put the cassette on

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  5 років тому +1

      It actually wasn't the freehub! I've found out what the issue was and fixed it :)

    • @Herbybandit
      @Herbybandit 5 років тому

      Spill!!!! What was it? I found a wobbly freehub on a Quando hub the other day and thought easy job, just nip it up with a 12mm Allen key.
      Nope! Stripped it down to find all the splines on the aluminium hub were stripped out!

    Wow! Memory lane, I got one of these in late 92 at the age of 16.
    Got it with the insurance money after my Dawes Fat Chance was stolen. I think that was the time it was first launched too. From what I can remember there was an awful lot of marketing hype on it and it was said to be unbreakable. I did a 9 mile each way commute on it to my apprenticeship and I thought it didn't ride as nice as the Dawes.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  5 років тому

      I'm yet to give it a proper run in but you're backing up what I've been told about the ride. It's a heavy beasty compared to my 90's steel mtb too.

    Hi,
    I think a vintahe frame with all the provisions integrated to be used with a front derailleur should stay 3-by.
    But for me it would be worth, to get a simple, flat, short (60-90mm) stem, best to be painted matching pink, to lower the bar and for better looks, of course.
    The Nobby Nics are available in 26'', as skinwall!

    To help deal with rusty nuts and bolts plan ahead, for as long as possible before tackling a de-assembly of anything give every nut and bolt on drip of ordinary light oil as often as possible, and one drip is all it will need, it is time that is your friend, the oil will slowly soak into the nut or bolt and give you a better chance of getting it undone, giving a nut or bolt a spray of WD40 ten seconds before you try and undo it just doesn't help at all. the worst thing that can happen is using force on a dry, rusty thread and stripping it.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  5 років тому

      There was probably a week or so of soaking before finally getting that headset off. It was on there TIGHT.

    Good job fella, good call on the components.spending money on xt wouldn't really increase the value.I think maybe i'd neutralize the pink and red with black,take the 90's novelty cycle out of it.looking forward to your next vid. Bon continu.

    I think the crank is too worn I had the same problem with my 1997 lx crankset the rings got worn and work great with old chain that had stretched but a new chain causes skipping

    So the poll was pointless? Nice build none the less

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  5 років тому

      The poll wasn't completely pointless. The original resto actually had an early lead for a while. It was more to confirm not to use XT and save that for something else.

    greasing a tread is ... WRONG... why because grease reduces survace resistance and the bolt or whatever can come undone you want the bolt or whatever to stay so you put on Loctite or something like that. My Tip for most of the Bicycle Treads Linseed Oil. greetings from Germany

    • @Bacon676
      @Bacon676 5 років тому

      I mean, if you just keep up with the bike, it's fine. Grease is something the majority of us have just laying around the shop anyway, so it's really not that big of a deal

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  5 років тому

      Alloy vs Steel, there is definitely a need for grease there, like in the bottom bracket. No grease in there and you'll be looking at siezed shells further down the line. Crank bolts on the other hand, I will Loctite those.
