I remember in our local scrapyard they had a few old 20s cars in the back and one of them had an engine that looked just like this all the valve covers were off and you could see the over-head-valves and the gears driving them. If it was one of these I wish I would have taken it home. Sadly now their all gone melted down for scrap.

Franklin in engineering cars advanced for that time. His signature is on every Ford vehicle made, he designed the Ford script. First choice all three, second 1921 Jordan and throw in the Kissel.

Wills didn't just work at Ford Motor Co., he was best man at Henry and Clara Ford's wedding. He got permission from Henry before leaving with the understanding that Wills would not compete directly with Ford Motor Co. Marysville didn't exist before the Wills factory, the town is named for his wife, Mary Wills. The Wills Ste. Claire Museum in Marysville is a nice place to visit.

I was born in St. Clair County, Mish-Gin in Port Huron, and lived in Marine City when I was a baby in 1966-68, then in St. Clair itself in '68-'70. I lived down the street from Johnny Erickson, who's family owned the local Erickson drugs. This is a small town, and I rode my motorcycle from my parents house in Temperance in 1994. I wasn't impressed~

Hi Jay! Wills Sainte Claire is one of my favorite forgotten auto companies! They have a museum up there in Michigan that has at least two of the cars. The engine was GENIUS! WAY more than 10 years ahead of its time. Unfortunately, in those days advanced auto technology was expensive to develop and produce. That's why a lot of the exotic engines you saw at that time were in racing cars. Duesey's, MIllers, Ballot, Delage, Bugatti, etc. There is a very good book out there on Childe Harold Wills. I read it in a digital format, but it was a very good read! Amazon have it, I am pretty sure.
The museum I mentioned is in Marysville, Michigan and is called the Wills Sainte Claire Auto Museum. They have the largest collection of the cars in existence. WYR's are easy! WIlls for both! I have been fascinated with these cars for quite a few years. The Jordan was tempting, though! One more thing about Mr. Wills. He pioneered the use of molybdenum steel, which later became the very strong Chrome-Moly steels we have today! Go Wills!

Happy you dig this video there’s a few wills st Claire at the Gilmore Auto Museum. I’m going back there in a couple weeks I’m hoping to cover a couple or at least one they have some engines laying around too the greatest thing about the Gilmore is you can walk right up to those cars like it’s your car as long as you respect the car don’t touch it, it’s an awesome place to go
I’m gonna try to cover some stuff that I’m never gonna see again I would love to do a delayhe Bugatti type 35 is one of my favorite cars of all time it’s like a halo car to me I’m never gonna ever be able to forward one even if I could buy a pur sang totally would, but there’s no way that that would even happen I don’t know if I could spend that kind of money on one car. lol
I’m definitely in the camp that for 100 grand I would rather have 10 $10,000 cars than one $100,000 car and I’m also in the camp that it’s way more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car fast Plus the slow cars you could use all of them and not get in any trouble.
What’s weird is they made less V-8 than they did six cylinders but there’s way more information on the V8 than there is on the six I’m going to research the six when I go to Gilmore .. there’s some other engines that I want to cover that I can’t find information on this week. I was going to try to do the international Comanche for the 152/196, but there isn’t that much information on the Internet about them other than the 152 is half of the 304 and the 196 is half of the larger placement engine which I can’t remember off the top of my head but they did make a turbo version of the 152 but I don’t know if they made a turbo version of the 196 you would think that they would that’s a big four cylinder. Great choices as well.

What a brilliant design! So, you have a valve problem. You take the cylinder out, change the piston and rod, bcz they are also gone, swap a new/machined cylinder and put the engine back together in about 1,5 hours. 25 mins if in a hurry. Other than that, you change the oil two times per year and the setup will go on indefinitely. This should be the industry standard. Modular engines with reasonable capacity that you can service at the dealer within your lunch break, without destroying the economy.

In regular interval maintenance, things need to get looked at, maybe poked with a gauge or wiggled gently. Then add more lubricant and off you go. Talking about user friendly design. A 60° V angle does NOT give "absolute smoothness"; only a 90° V will give you that, and only with a cross-plane crank. From what the ad copy you show mentions, it seems this engine has a flat-plane crank, on which the V angle really doesn't make a whole lot of difference, unless it is put at 180° (making it a FLAT 8), otherwise there is always an uneven firing profile. However, with a flat-plane crank, the exhaust pulse profile IS perfectly even on each bank, reducing exhaust back pressure.

That engine is nice, but with the metallurgy of the day limiting valve life, and the primitive motor oils of the time it was impractical for regular automotive use. For most mechanics of the times, an engine like this was today's equivalent of "Rocket Science". Old folks like me will likely remember the 4- cylinder Offenhauser engine which dominated Indy-car racing for a long time. With it, the cylinder and head were cast as one, then bolted onto the block. They could take as much as 30psi of boost giving insane horsepower output with no head gaskets to fail.
WYR is the Willys- Knight which had a very good reputation in the day, and of course the Jordan- the "playboy's" choice.
