My wife and I just started making custom seats, and it caught my ears when you said you got your foam at Comfort Foam! That's where we got ours too! We live in Basehor, KS. Thank you greatly for showing the complete process!
Thoughts exactly when I heard him say it Great craftsmanship I'm here in Miami and I've tried to get my 93 Ford OBS bench done everybody wants to order a vynal kit s and charge you $6/$900 wish this guy lived down here
I was browsing UA-cam to find various methods to reupholster a IH TD-15 Bulldozer bench style seat. What I've seen here is amazing. A clean, well formed, taut cover that with it's lack of welts prevents wear and a continuous wire to pull the cover evenly into form with no staple to pull out or glue to lose bond. Thank you for sharing this with us o UA-cam, sir.
W O W What an incredible video! So much valuable information. If only all people posting DIY videos could nail it like you do.(some are just god awful terrible) Yours are an absolute d e l i g h t. I just started sewing(at age 51 lol) and I am getting ready to reupholster boat and camper cushions. This helped a ton. You are a journeyman re-upholsterer , if there ever was one. Thank you Sir Buckminster
It's a joy to watch you working. You do your work in such a special way and you give the upholstery new life and dignity. Thank you very much for your teaching.
I like the sheet metal notcher. Also I wished I had the foam cutter when I reupholstered my boat interior and my RV Dinette Sofa. The slip Ease seems handy too. The heavy paper for patterns us nice to work with. That same vinyl I have used many times. It lasts great! The last thing I liked was the use of the picture wire to draw the fabric tight. All useful ideas. Sir, Great job!
I have done many types of seats and this is a example of the amount of time required when doing custom work. Most customers think it is a couple of hours and have no idea let alone the materials required
I really enjoyed seeing this process and your explanations where needed. Seeing how much effort and materials there is for a basic job makes a person really appreciate luxury custom work.
Nice work! I used to work at an auto upholstery shop years ago. Watching that refreshed my memory on doing some things. I recently picked up an old Pfaff 138 non-walking foot machine. I am SLOWLY teaching myself how to use it (also bugging my old boss/friend some!).
If you watch a craftsman that makes a project look like childsplay..then you have viewed decades of skill come to an amazing revelation. Well done sir..thank you for the privilage of viewing a lifetime of skill and talent. Best to you and yours. ..Newly SUBSCRIBED.
That looks like a tough job requiring lots of patience and skill. About to attempt to tackle some custom centurion conversion captain chairs in my old pickup. This video gave some awesome basics on doing a seat, now it’s time to figure out how to do the designs of the bottom, back and arm rests. I got 5 seats to do, 4 Captain chairs and a bench seat. First, I got to figure out how to even thread this sowing machine!!
I was thinking the same thing. I've got an '89 Honda Civic hatch that I'm keeping and restore, but I'll let the upholstery experts handle the seats. My other option is to buy some aftermarket seats.
That is a wonderful job. I have done cousins on couches and such but never a vehicle seat. I think I will just have someone else do that for me. Thank you for sharing.
I love how you were very precise!! Thank you for making this video! My husband and I recently bought a car that the seats were kinda torn up and I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how to fix the seats? The foam like in this video is like the foam in our vehicle. Please if you have any suggestions on how we can fix it, it would be very helpful! We have a 1990 Acura Legend.
nice work ! I’m a retired Woodworker who has had many hobbies one of mine has been Sewing and Upohlstery whenever we do glue ups in Woodworking using Contact Adhesive we usually put down dowels or a piece of rope between the parts we are going to stick together that allows you to be able to align the two parts up perfectly without them accidently getting stuck in possibly the wrong position i’m assuming your foam adhesive is similar to a Contact style Cement perhaps thinned to spray easier and not disentegrate the foam parts that are being glued
That turned out great! I noticed you didn't allow for a seam allowance on either piece, is this a general rule of thumb in order to create a tight fitting cover once the foam compresses some?
This is the first upholstery video I watched. What I learned; Don't try this at home, find me a guy like you in my area. So sorry I won't subscribe, and I probably won't watch another upholstery video of any kind. I respect your work, it's an art. I already have one main "trade" and a few hobbies. I don't have 50 years left to learn this.
Surprised nobody has asked approx how much you would charge to do this service, and how much of that cost is materials vs. labor. Amazing work, loved the video.
Excellent work from a skilled Craftsman. Thank you for the video. How do you suggest that someone reupholster themselves without the industrial sewing machine and professional foam cutter that you have on hand? I understand the quality of work will not be the same of course.
Awesome tutorial. I hope to be able to do videos of this quality some day. Also, you didn't add seam allowance after tracing that foam, is that in order to make the vinyl hug the foam tightly? ALSO, those notch clippers are brilliant.
hi is that a straight knife in that cutter? wondering because i have been told that a straight knife is good for cloth materials but not for foam. or do you have a different blade on there. thanks. i like to get one of those cutters but dont know if it would cut foam thanks ...
so i noticed you didn’t draw out a seam allowance on the back of the leather during layout. can you explain? won’t that make the size of the seat smaller ? do you just offset a a certain amount when sewing? i just bought a machine and i’m i’m trying to learn. thanks for your time
I have been an upholsterer for 30ty years. Good job, especially replacing the webbing and not cheating the customer. 👍
What foam do you recommend for 1950’s to 1970’s bench seats? How thick?
My wife and I just started making custom seats, and it caught my ears when you said you got your foam at Comfort Foam! That's where we got ours too! We live in Basehor, KS. Thank you greatly for showing the complete process!
"That's not too bad." You kidding, it's marvellous. Really enjoyed watching you work, please keep it up.
We enjoy putting out these features. Thanks for tuning in!
Very informative! Excellent
I agree, thats high quality solid work.
Stay gold.
The MAN is so humble.
One of the greatest virtues.
...Now days that is!
Great workmanship.

As a craftsman I have a lot of respect for others that use their hands. Excellent work. Inspiring,
I was flabbergasted at the amount of time, effort and skills involved. Wish I had those skills.

His experience and care for quality shows from start to finish. As a 66 yr old old woodworker, hats off to ya.

Hard to find craftsmen who take pride in their work and time do do a good job. Very well done for sure!
Thanks for the very informative demonstration.
It's a joy to watch you working. You do your work in such a special way and you give the upholstery new life and dignity. Thank you very much for your teaching.
This was wonderful! A lot of work, guided by a most skilled professional. Enjoyed the video immensely. Thank you!
"Not too bad" - UNDERSTATEMENT!! :-) Sir, you are a true master craftsman!
The artist is the worst critic of his own work.
Great work! I've always wondered how much work goes into repairing vinyl covers in automobiles. Way more than I thought. Thanks!!!
Thank you for such a behind the scenes look at what a true craftsman is all about, I loved watching this, and your tools of the trade are awesome...
Excellent video! Amazing craftsmanship and great information and you have brought so many great tips and instructional dialogue. Thanks
Thanks for selflessly sharing your skills. It answered lots of questions for me.

It's a 15 minute video. I'm impressed that you can get a seat done in 15. ;)

Cool!
Thank you for educating us in such a straight-forward and engaging manner.
He makes this look so easy. Knows his stuff. Just the process looks so cool.
It's crazy you put this out for free, I learned so much, thank you!
Best tutorial I've seen in a while. So, so good. Thank you!
Wow, Wow, Wow!!! Genius. You did things in this post, I would never had thought of. Thank you for your wealth of knowledge.
Really enjoyed your professionalism in this video - and learnt a lot - thanks
Excellent video!! I can see the expertise and years of experience come together in this video!!

You are truly a master at your craft. The type of craftsmanship worth the wait, the drive and the price. 👍👌 perfection

thanks for the video

You did your cousin? On the couch?
this man is an artist, excellent work!
Beautiful and you did a superb job as if that was fresh from the factory.
Wow. OUTSTANDING workmanship!!
Thanks for sharing your work. Another great video!

Nice work! You make it look so simple. Of course it is if you have been doing it half of your life. :-)
Very cool! You make it look easy! Thank you for sharing your talent!

Foam in the majority of vehicles is molded to shape and will be very difficult to replicate. I would try a salvage yard and replace the seats.
Amazing work! Wonderful to see!!
One of the trades that was offered in my junior high school. Wish it was offered in the HS that I went to. I miss the smell of fresh upholstery!
i have always wanted to try my hand at this! wow you have alot of experience it shows great work! keep sharing please!
This is what America use to full of, craftsmen doing an honest job for honest pay. Thank you my friend.
Well, thank you my friend...

I'm aware of this type of procedure also used in gluing laminates to counter tops and tables.
Mighty fine job! Looks great.
This great informative video left me in stitches!!!
OUCH!
'such a joy to watch a true craftsman work
Nice work dude! Thanks for sharing! I'm starting out without a sewing machine so I'll be Frankenstichin.
very talented individual. a pleasure watching.
Really enjoy watching this type of videos. Awesome work!
I’m big fan now ! Your such a pro ! Great vids
that's a pleasure to watch and I learned a lot. thank you
Love your shop, it's super clean
Very nice work!
Thank you for your craft. Most people would just buy a new one off the shelf.
Thanks for the video. It was fascinating watching you work. How often in upholstery work is it useful to have a cylinder arm sewing machine?
I don't know a great deal about sewing machines but one with a walking foot like this is very important.
That turned out great! I noticed you didn't allow for a seam allowance on either piece, is this a general rule of thumb in order to create a tight fitting cover once the foam compresses some?
Thanks. "Yes" to your question.
Great video , I’m just starting out in upholstery and was wondering what a job like this would close approximately ?
I don't recall how much this cost. It would depend on one's rate of charge. Three-four hours.
I knew I was going to enjoy this video 10 seconds in.
This is the first upholstery video I watched. What I learned;

Dang sweet work
Awesome job. Very informative!
Great work, excellent video,I actually learned something!
Stainless cable is a great idea!
You sir, are an artist.
The video had me glued to the screen. Where are you based and how much does an upholster like this cost a customer?
I'm in southeast Nebraska in the middle of America. It seems like this seat cost $225 but I'm not sure. Glad you enjoyed.
Great craftsmanship! Do you ever use an oven to first heat the material when stretching over a larger piece?
No. On some occasions I might resort to a hair blow dryer.
Loved watching your work
Awesome tutorial. I hope to be able to do videos of this quality some day.
Also, you didn't add seam allowance after tracing that foam, is that in order to make the vinyl hug the foam tightly?
ALSO, those notch clippers are brilliant.
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, regarding your question as to a snug fit.
Great job!

Great video. Nice camera work.
Camera and technical work by Brandon Hylton.
Very nice job. What brand is the tool you have used to cut the round edges?
Eastman.
Nice. Thank you for the lesson.
Great work sir! About your scissors/shears, do you sharpen those yourself or do you have a service that does that?
I have a "manual" sharpener I bought thirty-some years ago. Two grades of stone on a sliding arm. Not electric and highly precision.
@@Buckminsterupholstery Good, those shears' edges must get beat up cutting fabric, etc.
Those scissors look amazing! What brand are they and are they of the same vintage as your sewing machine?
Pleasure watching you work.
Wiss shears and yes, same vintage as the sewing machine.
Very nice and clean thanks
so i noticed you didn’t draw out a seam allowance on the back of the leather during layout. can you explain? won’t that make the size of the seat smaller ? do you just offset a a certain amount when sewing? i just bought a machine and i’m i’m trying to learn. thanks for your time

wow. I wish I could do that . Great job!
How's that 1950s foam cutter? Amazing to see these veterans at work.
It's not foam cutter
Its fabric cutter
