    The first time I started using watercolours(which was because of you 😄) I always mixed colours with black colour to get a darker colour and never got what I really wanted then I started mixing around different colours to see what can create a possible darker version and I was impressed by the result the complementary ones created! and yeah this video is really very helpful mako❤️
    Also all your watercolour guides are honestly soo helpful. It has helped me in improving my art a lot!

      or even watching others swatch while you swatch!

    • @KoenPrins
      @KoenPrins 4 роки тому +12

      I suddenly had an insight! It is satisfying because playing with colors is satisfying and when doing "normal" painting you are (at least I am) very focused on the result that needs to look good. "This house needs to look like a house, this face needs to look realistic" things like that. But when swatching, you can focus on the colors and nothing but the colors, and weren't the shiny colors why we went to watercolors in the first place? It is basically a straightforward way to enjoy one of the aspects of watercolor without the pressure of a recognizable end result.

      Why do they say you need?

    • @fluctuatingfanby
      @fluctuatingfanby 4 роки тому +8

      Apparently, it helps to mix black with other colors as opposed to just using pure black so that it can fit your color scheme. Like, if your painting has a warmer color scheme, a warm black (black+red) will fit in instead of being overpowering.

    • @Makoccino
      @Makoccino  4 роки тому +4

      @@fluctuatingfanby Ahh I thought the question was why people say you should use premixed blacks instead of mixing them yourself!

    • @denisestover2416
      @denisestover2416 4 роки тому +8

      @Aidan...
      Watercolor artist's say to mix your own black(s) instead of using black(s) out of the tube. The reason is that when you mix your own black the result is a vibrant color with beautiful depth.
      Because you are in control of which colors go into the black, you can choose to have it match your color scheme or use a complimentary color-based black, just as @Liza Mondragon suggested.
      The black from the tube is dead and lacking any kind of depth. It brings no life to the piece - it actually takes the life away.
      You can see this when you create a painting using black out of the tube and create a painting using your own mixed blacks. If you try this, use the same colors in each and, if possible, use the same image.
      Blacks are pretty easy to mix. If you're new to mixing your own blacks it helps to create a grid similar to Mako's one here. Use that to try out different colors, different bases and adding varying temperature colors to give you a cool black, a warm black or something in between.
      I hope that helps. God Bless!

    about CMY vs RYB, there is no set of primary colours that enable you to get every possible colour. I think printers use CMY because it gives a broader range of the colours people commonly print than RYB. However, using 6 primaries, viz warm/cool RYB, gives you a broader range than just one of each of RYB and helps overcome that limitation.
    Since C is pretty much warm blue, it would be interesting to see what range you get if you substitute M for cool red. Note printer's magenta is actually a strong pink, not a classical magenta. Classical magenta might be too cool to be useful as a primary and will probably give very muddy results.

    Some of the most popular and usable colors are made with black, including paynes grey, sepia, and indigo. These shades are so versatile that they are commonly chosen to produce single color paintings, hardly "dull and boring" . Stop villianizing black. It's just another color. Many people NEED subdued colors. It's also less pigments in a mix resulting in a purer color.. a mixed black adds a minimum of two pigments, more likely three if you are using a mixed secondary... so if you want to mix your own dark neutral from that you are looking at four to five pigments when you could get the same thing from two.

So it would be great if you made a whole video dedicated to using charcoal and chalk pastels properly. Love you Mako! 💙💙
