Oh, if you didn't know, Nazis conscripted many Poles right after invading it. Same with the Czechs. Some of them were even sent to Normandy prior to the invasion. Many historian believes that the Nazis saw Poles as one of their own.
While it sounded good in theory,we need to remember a few things: #1:The Western Allies were tired of fighting. They fought their way from North Africa to Germany #2:The U.S. Army troops were concerned that they might be shipped to the Pacific to take part in Operation Olympic the planned invasion of mainland Japan. I knew a few old timers who were ready to start training for the invasion of Japan in early '46. They were grateful and overjoyed when they got the news about the Abombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. #3:The Russkies had also fought their way from Moscow to Berlin and they weren't gonna be pushovers!!
Honestly the idea of Operation Unthinkable leaves me with one big question after its declassification: How did the Poles feel to learn that the West brewed up a plan to liberate Poland from the Soviets but ultimately never went through on it despite Britain using Poland's fall in 1939 as leverage to fight Germany?
I'd pose an alternate question as well. How many poles would have wanted to have another world War take place in their backyard, being used as the scapegoat to wipe out communism?
I can’t speak for all Poles, but for me it’s a mixed feeling. On one side we lost so many people, our cities got destroyed, we didn’t have much food left and such a war would cause even more death, destruction and famine. But on the other hand, the idea of avoiding 44 years of red tyranny and not losing our eastern territories seems beautiful. But the war would probably last so long that it wouldn’t be worth it.
I think for our country it would be better if Churchil war was started. Under comunism we lost much more than during WW2... Living in Poland after WW2 till 1989 was disaster...

The scary thing is that this almost happened without churchills plan. I had several great unlce in laws that fought in ww2. The troops talked as the fighting got closer and closer to Berlin and many were convinced that they would be back within another 20 years to fight the soviets. When the allies were stationed across from the soviets during the germans surrender, some of the us forces started aiming at the soviets. A commanding officer noticed and ordered them to stand down. They did as ordered otherwise we'd have a completly different history here.
Considering ww1 was basically 20 years earlier makes sense. The only thing that stopped it in the 60’s was nukes and they didn’t know about those until after Germany fell
Imagine being a German in this timeline. You invade the Soviet Union, fight the biggest battles in human history, push to within sight of Moscow but falter, spend the next two years failing to stop the red tide. The war gets all the way back to Berlin, Hitler makes one good decision, but it's too late, the fronts are closing in. The Reich has fallen; you've lost but somehow survived it all. Then, only a few weeks later, Winston Churchill appears and offers you a job. You go with him, end up at some massive staging area in western Germany, and ask him about the job. 7:30 THE main importance of keeping the seas in allied hands , is supply line. To keep the supplies from American (unhindered) factories/farms would fuel the constant supplies into europe to help the allies. If they lost the sea, mass supplies would stop, and supplie lines would faltered. People forget that supply lines and logistics are one of the top important parts of war.
Worth noting that, although the Soviets had more divisions in Europe than the western Allies, they had nearly depleted their manpower reserves by the end of the war, while the Americans still had a large pool of men who could be sent to fight if needed; additionally, the Soviet industrial and agricultural bases had suffered a great deal of damage from the German invasion, while those of the U.S. and U.K. were still mostly (U.K.) to entirely (U.S.) intact.
+ The US was sending a lot of supplies to the Soviet Union which freed up Soviet capability for other wartime materiel (Tanks, Planes)stopping this would mean they would have to take people off from the factories and divert for other purposes i.e. agriculture etc.

Y'know, it's pretty disingenuous to say that the soviets had 2.5 times the men simply because they had 2.5 times the divisions. Their standard rifle division was thousands of men smaller than their western counterparts, at full strength. I highly doubt many of the closest Soviet divisions towards the west were anywhere near full strength at that time. Though I'm not saying that means an attack by the west would've been feasible just that the numbers were not anywhere near 2.5 times the men.
I mean, no, not really, all the data we have shows that the USSR flatly outnumbered the Allies' planned strength in Western Europe, in every way. Their entire strategy was fundamentally based around that fact. They themselves knew and historical records show that yes, the Soviets would have outnumbered the Allies by 2.5 to 1. That's not just in division quantity, real life is not Hearts of Iron IV. They had more actual men too. That was a basic fact of Allied contingency plans. It's disingenuous to pretend to have cracked the code and figured out that all that data and Allied planning was a lie because you found out that USSR division composition and organization was different. They still outnumbered the Allies. 2.85 to 1 by some estimates. They had several thousand more aircraft too.
@@iMajoraGaming There is no way Soviets had more aircraft imo.Americans alone produced twice the amount of Soviets produced between 1940-1945 despite the fact their models were way more expensive ones than Soviet aircraft. @@costliercart7195 I think thats too far fetch but yeah, combined with the equipment they got from lend lease the Soviets would’ve pushed the allies back to the Rhine river, the allies would use their advantages to create a defensive at the river to prevent another Dunkirk.
@@costliercart7195 No. The Western Allies had more equipment, supplies and combined a larger airforce compared to the Soviets. Just because one side has a huge number of soldiers doesn't automatically mean that they win.
A lot of soviet wins in 1944 was because of attrition, not great strategy or tactics. Too much of the Red Army's doctrine was tied up in politics to reach it's full potential, much like Germany's military and economy was handicapped by it's perverse philosophies regarding labor and it's pervasive xenophobia. TL;DR: once America got it's logistics train secured, the Soviets on the Western front would be doooooooomed.
The Soviet Red Army was having man power problems by 1943 and by the battle of Berlin the units that attacked Berlin were only at 80% strength, the reason the Soviets had more divisions was that they were smaller in terms of manpower
Not to mention, a lot of those divisions were almost anhiliated in the ensuing tide in Germany. Plus, for every Zhuckov, [who's loyalty to the USSR would be... Questionable given how close he was with Ike], you had a 1945 Era Putin and Tsar Nicholas commanding other overall fronts. Plus, the Anglo-American-Polak Airborne Army was a MASSIVE tactical asset compared to the extremely infant VDV and Spetsnaz. And he did downplay air power. I'm quite confident once the IL-2 fleet of the USSR was decapitated, the US P-47's and British Hawker Typhoons would've been much more of an asset against Soviet logistics [which were already near breaking at times], and Soviet combat, especially armored formations. I mean, the Germans ANHILIATED A WHOLE ARMORED CORPS [Or division) WITH STUKA'S IN KURSK! The US could easily do the same, especially if those Naval and Marine Avaitors could join the fight. Then the Whermacht divisions with their remaining Tigers, Panthers, Panzer IV's, and other such weapons along with lended Sherman's and other designs would've been a sight to behold, especially when you consider they still had quite the considerable K/D Ratio against Soviet T-34's. When you consider that Germany would still be able to put up quite a fight for their size, and that the USSR was I'm quite a precarious position, and not to mention you'd be putting the Chuck Yeagers and the Erich Hartmann's of the war together on the same side, it's not quite as simple as "HEHE! URRRRA GO BRRRRRR!"
True sadly I see as of today Russia has not changed by using overwhelming numbers with this unnecessary war in the Ukraine. Just using wave after wave of troops. But the soviet build-up to the battle of Berlin was crazy I think it was at least 1.5 million soldgers agenst the last of the last of what Germany could even scrape up. Thd Germans still in 1945 caused the red army a million causalitys.
@@leomduffy794 , Yeah. That is quite true. Honestly, with modern warfare [please don't make a COD or Captain Price reference], it seems as if those massive wave tactics just won't work. Because with NATO you have such well trained, elite formations using such integrated combined arms tactics.
It was called Unthinkable for a reason. I don't think it was ever seriously considered, even if planners were tasked with putting together a serious analysis.

When peace was an option the army would have mutinied rather than go along with another example of Churchill being strategically inept, he also proposed D-Day going through Portugal and Spain and was behind the disastrous Gallipoli campaign. It was Churchill who agreed that Poland would be in Soviet sphere of influence at a conference with Stalin.
It was FDR that held all the cards, Churchill knew his bargaining power was useless at that point in the war. It was USA that could push Stalin for more but FDR was so sick at the end of his life that he conceded to Stalin and he is one that will take the cake and the table too if he can.
Gallipoli is the only time Churchill has been strategically inept. As for the D-day in Portugal, well it never happened so how will we know the answer to that?
@@RoachChaddjr Neither Portugal nor Spain were in the war, both were neutral and assisted the allies as much if not more than the axis, so it would have needlessly expanded the conflict.

Don't forget without lend lease explosives and trucks, the Soviets would be extremely short on actual usable numbers. It would be far more sustainable material wise for the allies.
In 1945 soviet union almost stopped using lend lease trucks and other stuff. Because in Kremlin they were not retarded. They ordered to replaced all lend lease vehicles with their own, using new factories
A) Most of Lend Leased vehicles were Interwar ones which were already outclassed, they were used as "in case of dire need". Equipment which could be used was upgunned and uparmoured to be useful. B) Without Commies ya would be living without minimal wage, free helthcare and worker rights. You would be = slave to whoever you are employed to. Only thing you could somewhat decide in was your personal life. C) I am unaware lend lease had explosives, most of it was outdated vehicles, trucks and boots. Lot of boots.
Although certain goods (like trucks and some medical supplies) were almost entirely supplied by the allies to the USSR army, this notion that it would be a killing blow is incredibly optimistic. At the peak year of goods/GDP it still only accounted for roughly 5 % of the USSRs economy, this isn't remotely comparable to e.g US lend lease to the UK. Theres no chance they would get a truck shortage in either the short or longterm... Even the idea of pushing the gigantic soviet army to the Oder river was ambitious...
The scene with the british drinking tea, germans with a beer near them American with dual wielding weapons a burger and the russians with vodka made me laugh out loud
Operation Unthinkable was the name given to two related possible future war plans by the British Chiefs of Staff against the Soviet Union in 1945. The plans were never approved nor implemented. The creation of the plans was ordered by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in May 1945 and developed by the British Armed Forces' Joint Planning Staff in May 1945 at the end of World War II in Europe. One plan assumed a surprise attack on the Soviet forces stationed in Germany to "impose the will of the Western Allies" on the Soviets. "The will" was qualified as "a square deal for Poland", which probably meant enforcing the recently signed Yalta Agreement. The planners decided that without massive American help Britain would probably fail. The assessment, signed by the Chief of Army Staff on 9 June 1945, concluded: "It would be beyond our power to win a quick but limited success and we would be committed to a protracted war against heavy odds." The code name was now reused instead for a second plan, which was a defensive scenario in which the British were to defend against a Soviet drive towards the North Sea and the Atlantic following the withdrawal of the American forces from the Continent. At no time was either plan shared with the United States or anyone else. When the Labour Party came to power in the 1945 general election, it ignored the draft plan. The study became the first Cold War-era contingency plan for war with the Soviet Union. Both plans were highly secret and were not made public until 1998 - although a British spy for the Soviets, Guy Burgess, had passed on some details at the time.
Thank you so much for your hard work Simple History. I think operation unthinkable would had been catastrophic and possibly even worse than world war 2. I don't think the world would want another war.
The one thing that I liked about this video was the soldiers were having their popular food and drink. The British with their tea, the Germans with their beer, the Americans with their burgers and the Soviets with their Vodka.
The Soviets divisions were far smaller than the allied ones. Soviet rifle divisions were roughly 8 thousand men strong at full strength where as the allied ones sat around 17 or 18 thousand. Also note the allies had a boatload of tank battalions not part of tank divisions so that all allied divisions could count on tank support.
@@jamesquinney6686 The allies had millions of soldiers in the european theater with no shortage of manpower. The Soviets had more men and more tanks technically, but that means absolutly nothing considering the allies would obtain complete Air Supremacy fairly quickly. They also had far better established supply lines over the Soviet ones. Operation unthinkable also called for raising 300,000 or more German troops from POWs already taken.
@@johnfrancis2215 thats not necessarily true. That works both ways. Often times, for example poland did wargames recently before the ukriane invasion and they concluded they would last less than 20 days vs the Russian military. We now know for a fact they way over estimated the Russians. But I do get where you are coming from.
Stalin thought of doing the same thing. When his generals proposed that he continue the war into Western Europe, Stalin said about the hundreds of millions of Europeans, "Who will feed them?"
Churchill thinking he wasn’t a “lesser of two evils” is hilarious. He was just a drunk English Warhawk jealous that the USSR could liberate what the English couldn’t.
Operation Unthinkable would have succeeded. Declassified war times documents leaked after the Soviet Union voted itself out of existence show that Stalin started shipping his forces to staging areas in the Russian Far East as soon as Germany surrendered. By the time Unthinkable would have taken place, there were just enough Soviet forces left in Eastern Europe to maintain order, but not hold it. And Stalin had most of those forces up against the western frontier, where the western allies could see them. Had Unthinkable taken place, American, British, French, German, and probably Italian forces would have smashed through Soviet lines in a few days, and found only mild resistance all the way to the former Polish-Soviet border. It would have taken weeks for Stalin to get his army back into Europe, and by then it would be too late.
They really missed opportunity to save mankind from Communism and Russia. Now that nukes exists were all going to be extinct at one point thanks to those two.

Can we appreciate the fact that in 3:34, they took the time to animate a British soldier sipping tea, a German soldier with a glass of beer and an American soldier with multiple bronze stars and a rocket launcher while wielding SMGs on both his hands
The one omission I can think of is whether the US atomic weapons would have tipped the balance, but these hadn't yet been used when Operation Unthinkable was written
It’s worth noting that Soviet divisions were often 1/3 the size as their western counterparts, hence the manpower imbalance was not largely in favor of the soviets.
They either didn't feel like it anymore or would be out for revenge. Would also probably give some would consider something like treason. In Germany nobody wanted war anymore. In addition, Germany lay in rubble and ashes. They would probably feel more used or perhaps even resist. Everything possible. Perhaps they would have made conditions such as getting the German eastern territories back from Poland and reversing Stalin's westward shift. The Germans hated the Soviets for everything they did and what they are and especially their tyrant Stalin, but they didn't want any more war either. Nor were they friendly to the Allies. The Allies did not ingratiate themselves with the targeted bombing of the German civilian population. In addition, Germany was not "denazified" so there could still be werewolf members. That this operation could have succeeded was very doubtful. The operation is not called "unthinkable" for nothing
@@nrw64 Not to mention that the German Army was a shadow of what it was at the height of WWII. They were relying on underage recruits and even WWI veterans and most of their armoured vehicles, tanks, planes, bombers and such were destroyed or heavily damaged. They were completely outmatched and rather out of date as a army by 1945. The Red Army would have known that and simply commit maneuvers on those forces and possibly outflank whatever stronger forces they could be engaged against.
Was Operation Unthinkable truly planned to be realized, or was it just one possible scenario they would have prepared for? I would imagine an attack from the Soviet side would have been likely at the time too
It was likely just a war plan they had drafted but didn’t intend to execute unless properly justified. Prior to World War 2, the United States had arranged a collection of various contingency war plans in case it went to war with any of the world powers or regional threats including Allies. Look up the Color-coded War Plans.
I always thought that the US had the Atomic Bomb 4 full years before the Soviets, so how did they fail to use this as the decisive leverage needed to force Stalin to pull back from Eastern Europe?
Probably the cost of being seen as a genocidal imperialist country especially after Nagasaki and Hiroshima wouldn't have been to good and then theres successfully deploying the bomb
Atomic bombs was a luxury in 1945, it have few of them to be use against massive Soviet armed forces.Even if it did use against the Soviets, it will drastically motivate the Soviets to fight to the end as Western Allies really want to wipe out the Soviets as a whole.
The Russians would have developed the bomb soon after. The retaliation of the supposedly-surrendered Soviets would have left Britain and France a radioactive wasteland.

#2:The U.S.
Honestly the idea of Operation Unthinkable leaves me with one big question after its declassification:
How did the Poles feel to learn that the West brewed up a plan to liberate Poland from the Soviets but ultimately never went through on it despite Britain using Poland's fall in 1939 as leverage to fight Germany?
I'd pose an alternate question as well. How many poles would have wanted to have another world War take place in their backyard, being used as the scapegoat to wipe out communism?
Some Poles waited for the next war, some were relieved it didn't happen, some were dissapointed

He turns around with a smile, holding a tommy gun and a cigar and says: "Why Jerry, the job is Barbarossa 2, Electric Boogaloo. Now let's go kill some commies."

7:30 THE main importance of keeping the seas in allied hands , is supply line. To keep the supplies from American (unhindered) factories/farms would fuel the constant supplies into europe to help the allies. If they lost the sea, mass supplies would stop, and supplie lines would faltered.

Americans would have nukes soon anyway. Moscow would cease to exist.
Maybe the Soviets would have fared better if Stalin et al hadn't killed all their half-decent generals.

The Soviets also organized their divisions differently compared to ours.

Should of attacked and eliminated them commies.the world would be a better place.

Ok
We need a movie and game of this
The Soviets divisions were far smaller than the allied ones. Soviet rifle divisions were roughly 8 thousand men strong at full strength where as the allied ones sat around 17 or 18 thousand. Also note the allies had a boatload of tank battalions not part of tank divisions so that all allied divisions could count on tank support.
Yeah because they have Britain France Germany USA Canada and Australia what will you expect to the top ten country ally vs a top 2 russia
So the allies would have around 800,000 soldiers and the soviets would have over 2 million
@@cadelussenden5144 wars always work out better on paper, especially ones that were never fought
Patton would have agreed with Churchill's plan.
3:55 CAPTAIN PRICE?!
Stalin thought of doing the same thing. When his generals proposed that he continue the war into Western Europe, Stalin said about the hundreds of millions of Europeans, "Who will feed them?"
This would have been an interesting timeline. Whether it would have been better or worse almost impossible to know.
Churchill was insane, that's it
Well greatly done fellows!! The animation has changed a lot sinceI first started watching back in 2019. I love it. Keep up the good work.
What's your idea about my channel ?
ua-cam.com/channels/-ZHNksu7UlZ2hiLIvyEw2Q.html
Churchill thinking he wasn’t a “lesser of two evils” is hilarious. He was just a drunk English Warhawk jealous that the USSR could liberate what the English couldn’t.
Naziism is authoritarianism but so is communism.
Lmao sit down vatnik.
I like the fact that the brits and russians are sipping vodka and tea during the battle
That's assuming they didn't notice the preparations for the attack and halt the redeployment.
They really missed opportunity to save mankind from Communism and Russia. Now that nukes exists were all going to be extinct at one point thanks to those two.
That is, if the Soviets totally didn't expect it to happen
Werent the redeployment of troops a part of alied agrement concerning war with Japan ?
what do you mean voted itself out of existence? most soviets voted to keep the union together
Imagine they actually went with the plan
The world would be a better place
The Warsaw pact would extend from Vladivostok to Lisbon....
@@aleksander_h6928 What warsaw pact lmao that didn't even exist at that time
there would be no deterrence.
I imagine at least 1/4 of us wouldn't exist. Think about all the generations of families completely wiped out in WW1 and WW2.
3:34 simple history being funny is something I was not expecting nor prepared for, but good god I love it
You can’t compare division numbers as a comparison of numbers. Soviet divisions were both smaller and under manned with many of them less half their theoretical strength
But did the Western Allies consider that?
I think it's comparsible because of level of morale and military experience in soviet troops
@@andershargrave7246 you're "I think" is the same as " I just want my guys to win, and this totally immeasurable metric confirms that pound for pound my side was better"
@@jackster2568 Totally immerasurable - maybe.
As i said it is my personal opinion. The conversation was about comparsing of divisions's powers. And i find questionable such methods of rating power
@@BladePocok I agree the planners would have but Simple History didn’t. At 8:30 they list the number of allied (103) vs soviet (264) division and concluded that they were outnumbered by a factor of 2.5. Which would not have been the case
Can we appreciate the fact that in 3:34, they took the time to animate a British soldier sipping tea, a German soldier with a glass of beer and an American soldier with multiple bronze stars and a rocket launcher while wielding SMGs on both his hands
Don't forget the hamburger
The one omission I can think of is whether the US atomic weapons would have tipped the balance, but these hadn't yet been used when Operation Unthinkable was written
The animation is becoming better every video keep it up a Good job 👍
It’s worth noting that Soviet divisions were often 1/3 the size as their western counterparts, hence the manpower imbalance was not largely in favor of the soviets.
It was soviet army was 10mil and allied forces 3.5mil approximately
@@EA-my1bx Deployment on the front is different to the Total size.
@@utkarshchoudhary3870 true but still soviet ground forces were stronger

2:00 didn't Churchill and Roosevelt sold Poland in Yalta Conference?
1:05 "Choosing the lesser lf 2 evils is still choosing the side of evil."
Could you imagine how the Germans would’ve felt about this?
The American 😂👌🏻 3:48
In the thumbnail one of the guns is supposed to be a PPD 40 but its a Suomi m/31
(It's a minor mistake but I just wanted to point it out)
I love that tje attitude wasn't that we wouldn't win but that it would take too long.
Was Operation Unthinkable truly planned to be realized, or was it just one possible scenario they would have prepared for? I would imagine an attack from the Soviet side would have been likely at the time too
There were some documents that stated Stalin was preparing to "save" Europe.
Yes
100 percent likely the Soviets would attack.
It was likely just a war plan they had drafted but didn’t intend to execute unless properly justified. Prior to World War 2, the United States had arranged a collection of various contingency war plans in case it went to war with any of the world powers or regional threats including Allies. Look up the Color-coded War Plans.
У американцев подобных планов было хоть жопой жуй. И все они предполагали превратить ссср в радиоактивный пепел Вот уж действительно, демократично.
They needed more of this in PC war games. Especially “what if” scenarios.

*Sad King Charles XII noises*
I always thought that the US had the Atomic Bomb 4 full years before the Soviets, so how did they fail to use this as the decisive leverage needed to force Stalin to pull back from Eastern Europe?
Me too. I always wondered 🤔
Probably the cost of being seen as a genocidal imperialist country especially after Nagasaki and Hiroshima wouldn't have been to good and then theres successfully deploying the bomb
Atomic bombs was a luxury in 1945, it have few of them to be use against massive Soviet armed forces.Even if it did use against the Soviets, it will drastically motivate the Soviets to fight to the end as Western Allies really want to wipe out the Soviets as a whole.
atom bomb is paper tiger, because war is about realizing economy and political struggle objective.
The Russians would have developed the bomb soon after. The retaliation of the supposedly-surrendered Soviets would have left Britain and France a radioactive wasteland.
