tyty :) ehh its gotten better now imo but i just feel like an actually dedicated software for task management is simpler and more intuitive

Community plugins (work both on desktop and mobile)
"Checklist" - for Todo List pane, shows you every "- [ ]" task in a file with specified tags (#ToDo is default one) in a dedicated pane as separate tasks. Click on it to open note, click on checkbox to mark it done, without opening your tab.
Can show either tasks with #tag directly above or below them, or all tasks in a file with a #tag inside it. I use second one, it is really good for recalling old tasks, my monkey brain is happy 🐒
"Reminder" - for timed todos, system-wide notifications (limitation - only works on mobile if you open the app) and dedicated Reminder pane for all timed todo's. In conjunction with "Natural Language Date" addon kinda works like Todoist. A little bit finicky, because you actually have to type, not tap and select. But, honestly, works, does it's job. I'm on a tiny hair before removing google calendar from my setup because of it.
"Day planner" - I didn't try it yet, but it looks like a day view in calendar. I definitely will try it, although can't say my monkey brain would use it much unless it just integrates into everything nicely (which it actually could, since everything inside Obsidian is just an .md file. If it works, I will be happy)
"Calendar" - it is just like a regular calendar where you tap on a date and get a daily note attached to it. And from within a note you can feel free to create #todo tag and "- [ ]" tasks, or add "ToDo" to filename, or put file into "Todos" folder, or do all of it together, just the way you like it.

I've managed to build up a content calendar and planner in Obsidian that's comparable to Notion (I came from Notion to Obsidian). It's definitely got a much steeper learning curve than Notion, but if staying in the same app is important for you (it is for me, I struggle with hopping around to different apps for different types of information), it can be done. I've begun to look at the difference between Notion and Obsidian as being a bit like the difference between a playset of toys vs a box of Lego. The Lego is definitely more involved and difficult to get what you want from it, but it's also more versatile. I definitely occasionally miss how easy it was to figure some things out on Notion, though!

One big issue I have experienced when trying different apps is that when you stick with an app for a few weeks or so and move to another app, you have to transfer the old data to the new app. This is why I like Markdown. Much easier.

Bro you're actually hilarious xD. I am someone who could not STAND the lagginess and limitations that came with using OneNote for note taking and in search for a better alternative and going down the rabbit hole of PKM and productivity this summer (please help, it’s getting bad), I stumbled across both apps. I've essentially imported my livelihood into both applications. I agree with you on both of your use cases. Notion is my planner, and Obsidian, my notebook. I also, personally, prefer journaling in Obsidian because my journaling information isn't uploaded to a public server and I don't have to worry about Notion staff laughing at my entries. Notion, for me, is like apple, and Obsidian, android. In the future, because I am a technical person, and a little nuts, I'll likely switch to Obsidian for both but Notion does feel very comfy for now.
Also you're kind of a psychopath for using the 80s Neon theme

If you check out my latest video you can get a glimpse on how I currently use Obsidian for projects and its related tasks :) I still do use todoist for a simple checklist though. It shouldn't be too hard to convert if you're somewhat tech savvy :p

Power of Notion is 🗓DATABASES 📊 (and interlinked databases)
Power of Obsidian is 🖇LINKS 🔗(#tags, embeds, and just actual links)
Their common powers are: 🌳TREES, #TAGS/SUBTAGS
Interlinked databases work great where structure is predetermined or at least sketched out in advance, but variables, well, vary.
Links works great when structure itself morphs and changes it's form over time. Works great for my monkey brain.

I really wanted to love Obsidian, but it really feels like the devs are only interested in hyper specific bullshit instead of basic things I would expect out of software like this...
    >Relative paths to images for CSS styling?
    Nope.
    >Organizing notes manually in the folder view?
Nope. Gotta star everything and do it that way.
    >Unique CSS per note page styling?
Nope. You get snippets and be thankful you get that despite how restrictive they are :]
I hate it because there are genuinely things I really like about Obsidian, namely the community plug-ins and some of the themes. But the lack of certain basic things + lack of ease of use aesthetic changes per note page are a MASSIVE turn off for me, personally.

    • @itsjohnmavrick
      @itsjohnmavrick  Рік тому

I mean you can use things like the folder note plugin to have a more organized folder view, or just to have your organization system based on links and notes rather than folders.
What kind of aesthetic changes would you want per page? If I recall there's already plugins that can help you set up your own stylings depending on blocks/elements, and if you're code-savvy you can create your own plugin or find a workaround like the rainbell obsidian vault.
But yeah, it's not like notion where you can visually create your pages seamlessly, but I do think it is possible.

First and foremost, thank you for responding so quickly. I wasn't expecting that and I really appreciate it.
I haven't looked into the folder note plugin. At the moment I am just creating every note ahead of time and organizing by creation time. It is not ideal, but it alleviates my OCD for now.
As for aesthetic changes per page, I am a very creative mind that's mostly interested in moving all of my writing notes from the many different systems I have used in the past (word, onenote, private IRC chat snapshots[not kidding], online only rich doc platforms, etc etc) into something that is more centralized, manageable, but customizable. Something that I can create a different looking page for each note (if I wanted). My friends and I used to have our D&D sheets on a private site with each person's OC sheets being different pages with vastly different styling. It was great, but that was mostly a group effort and trying to recreate something like that alone is a bit of a daunting project, so I have been searching for something that's more...seamless? Something where I can set a background image and its opacity for the whole page. Something where I can drag and drop images, rotate (basic transformations) and wrap text around them. Just colorful, "prettifying" stuff that would help keep my creative muse going.
Lastly, I definitely want to use something that at least can be offline and store stuff locally on my drive because I made the mistake of using an online only system in the past and then it went under while I was on a writing hiatus and I lost over half a year's worth of work :( Something losing its support like that has become a major fear for me.
And yeah, a friend has recommended notion to me as well, but I am not entirely sold on it just yet. I am trying Obsidian out for now, but I keep running into roadblocks as far as ease of use and certain functionality is concerned.
I am probably just too ignorant of Obsidian and Markdown in general though. Honestly if you ever up for a chat over discord or something. It might be easier to explain there.

I'll look into para and MoC when I have a chance! Thank you.
