    In case someone clicked on the video for the clickbait thumbnail: Obsidian is cool but no it does not replace Notion. In fact it seems to miss many features of Notion like
    * being usable by non power users
    * flawless syncing
    * easy version control
    * WYSIWYG editor (I know Obsidian has an experimental one but it's not comparable)
    * share notes as link or for collaborative editing
    * usable tables
    * layouting with columns
    * databases

    • @itsjohnmavrick

      Hey there! You definitely have some points and there are lot of things Notion does that can't be imitated as well in Obsidian. However, I just want to play devil's advocate:
      - After using both Obsidian and Notion recently, I feel like learning Obsidian isn't too hard and it can definitely be used casually for notes and daily journalling, not everyone has to create fancy templates and structures. I know many of my classmates that are transitioning into Obsidian from Google Docs/Notion, and are enjoying the experience so far.
      - Syncing can be flawless with the paid feature and almost-flawless with OneDrive/iCloud syncing
      - There is version control on the paid Obsidian Sync version, and with the free version you can see previous stages of your notes in the "File Recovery" section.
      - I think that one is subjective, as the WYSIWYG applies to everything except the line you're working on, which is important if you're working with markdown.
      - This is definitely a weak point of Obsidian, having to export to PDF does get tedious.
      - There is a plugin that makes table creation easy called "Advanced Tables", but it is still restricted to markdown and is not customizable as notion.
      - Sliding panes plugin/side-by-side notes can act as an alternative, but yeah this is one thing I really enjoy about Notion :p
      - The "Dataview" plugin can create similar Notion tables and queries while the "Kanban" plugin can imitate the board view.
      In hindsight, the two of them shouldn't really be compared as I'm using them both for completely different purposes, but the video is getting decent exposure from the clickbait so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
      I still stand by with preferring Obsidian over Notion for pure note-taking and academics though. Nonetheless, thanks for pointing out some of the edges Notion has over Obsidian since I actually had no Notion experience until very recently :)

      Notion is a really nice concept, but I think it is needlessly complex for some users who only want to take notes. It has so many options, customizations and tools for a wide array of unrelated needs, yet it lacks the right features for simply writing down ideas and study them. IT DOESN'T WORK OFFLINE.
      Obsidian on the other hand isn't perfect either. It is still buggy, intrincate to sync on multiple devices and dry to use, but at least has the correct focus for idea management.
      IMO both softwares will grow and became much better, especially thanks to the huge community support they have.
      But for now, the offline usability is the deal breaker for me.

      @@ardidsonriente2223 Yeah it's interesting to see the amount of praise Notion gets for note-taking, I think it's a much better planner instead. And what bugs are you referring to in Obsidian? I feel like I haven't really encountered much except for syncing issues

    Thank you!! I starting using Obsidian yesterday and was really lost.
    I'm in my second semester and struggling really hard with organizing my notes as a sp-t/audiologist student. I've been searching for a good note taking app for awhile now, and almost went with notion bc was the only app that had a lot of content about how to use it as a college student in my language. This video was a life saver.

    I would say if you're starting out with Obsidian, put thought into how you want to organize the vault. For example, I like to use layers that all originate from one "node" the index, the next layers are "areas" so daily notes, projects, training as the first layer, then I subdivide from there building a hierarchy. For example, my Daily Note gets attached to a month hub page, which is connected to a calendar year hub page that connects to the daily note hub page, and then the Index page. On the index, I have the main hub pages connected, and I use Dataview to provide the rest of the index, because it doesn't connect them to that page.
    Obsidian is built on the Atom IDE and so it functions like an IDE, meaning it has powerful search capabilities. If you have 1,000 notes and in one of them you had "I am awesome!" and you search for it, you'll find it without any tags or linking.

    I love the concept of Obsidian and the idea of a great "personal knowledge management" tool. It's a bit of a dream to have everything well organized in one place like that. However as an Engineering student I compromize, and use a combo of pen and paper and OneNote for learning and practicing skills and organizing my stuff. Even though OneNote is inferior in organizing and linking notes (only having uni-directional links). However, when you work with dynamics/mechanics or 3D maths for example, its vital to draw figures, and OneNote can do that natively with a stylus, or the phone app can scan and auto-crop written work switfly, which OneNote then actually makes searchable with OCR. There's been done studies that prove a positive effect of using pen-based input and drawings over keyboard-input when taking notes as well (Mueller and Oppenheimer, (2014). The pen is mightier than the keyboard.) (Van der Meer and Van der Weel (2017), Only Three Fingers Write, but the Whole Brain Works.) But I envy some of the features that Obsidian has in terms of more neat organization and linking with back-links and graph-view.

      Good points! Have you looked into Excalidraw for Obsidian? it's a plugin that lets you incorporate drawings and visuals into your notes. I did use onenote in school for things like math assignments, but I still typed my notes in Obsidian for the most part.

      Ooo, what two degrees are you pursuing? And no, at the moment I'm only doing a computer science/software related major :p
      Although I don't use them anymore as I'm pursuing other interests and fields, the notes and flashcards will always be there for me hehe.
      I would recommend checking out this video ua-cam.com/video/0UTzpIdLbVos/v-deo.html&ab_channel=JohnMavrick to see how I actually implement the course stuff

      @@itsjohnmavrick Hey, oh no, I'm doing a second degree CS program. These second degree programs are for people who took useless degrees as their first major lol (Health Sciences), but can't get into traditional CS programs because they need valid high school credits from the previous 5 years. UBC offers it as well (the best second CS degree program), but it's too much of a trek from Ontario (they're not online), and they take at least 2 years to complete. I think you made the right call taking a CS/Software major. I'm switching from analytics into tech.
      Thanks for the link! I'll definitely check out the video.

    • @itsjohnmavrick
      @itsjohnmavrick  Рік тому

      @@XAUCADTrader Ahh I see, yeah the degree is chill but I'm also second guessing whether I want to go to school or not, and with your previous interest in analytics are you planning on doing something related to data science? :o

    • @XAUCADTrader
      @XAUCADTrader Рік тому +1

      @@itsjohnmavrick I could do something in data science. The degree will open more doors, but I was just looking for a structured way to learn CS concepts. I have friends that have made it by going to self-taught route, but they entered long ago when the dev market was really hot. There's a slowdown now, so I have no issues to hunker down in a 1-year degree program (or 2 with coop). I could be spending awhile trying to find that first job anyway.
      This will be my third degree lol (second was education (1-year)), but I do not regret that one as I have a license to teach. I'm bilingual so I have a lot of flexibility in finding jobs in education with a floor of around 60k (BC is in the 40's =/).
      As someone that went through a lot of school, if your degree is useful (yours is) and/or gets you a license, you might as well do it. You'll have it forever, and you will make it past a company's HR algorithms and HR screeners. No one will doubt you know your stuff. Especially as the economy gets tougher and everyone tries to stream into the tech sector (where you'll see self-taught and bootcampers). Canada isn't a bad country to study, our tuition is fairly cheap. My suggestion is to use the coop stream to make finding jobs easier. It helped me tremendously to secure analytics work when I graduated.
      Check out Shane Hummus' channel, he talks about this. CS/Soft-Eng are the best degrees now - best ROI and best employability. When you get to my age (mid-30s), a year in the 20s has HUGE returns in investments in human capital. A degree is a seal of established human capital. Grind it out if you can. You'll be happy you did. Keep in mind, if you want the big bucks in the USA, TN Visas require 4-year Honours degrees. I'm sure it works the same with other countries. While you may not find the degree useful, it is useful against gatekeepers and immigration (which is the definition of a gatekeeper lol.) Also, of the people that don't have degrees, that insecurity doesn't seem to go away - more likely to have imposter syndrome or get paranoid that others may look down on you.
      You can ask for additional input (from people in the sector) from /cscareerquestions and /cscareerquestionsCAD on Reddit.

    • @itsjohnmavrick
      @itsjohnmavrick  Рік тому

      @@XAUCADTrader Thanks for the insight! Yeah there are benefits to completing the degree and it would be a good safety net but I just personally prefer self-learning over the traditional school system to offer more flexibility in what I learn. The thing is, I'm not sure if I can see myself working at a big corporate company working on one specific feature. I'd much rather start or work at a startup with lots of responsibility. Like you said, it would lead to a lot of money and security, but I could instead try to earn it through other income streams. Maybe I'll take my word back and go back to school after a few years of failed progress haha

    Any chance you could share what your Anime MOC looks like? I'm starting to sort of grasp how I should be setting this up, but I still get hung up on things like "I want to track all the anime I watch or want to watch, I should have a template....but also do I have a main page? Should I have a folder for watched or to watch?".
