    Ys is an action RPG series from the legendary developer Falcom. Here's a retrospective review of Ys I & II Chronicles which is a remake of the first two entries. Join Adol as he collects the 6 books of Ys and tries to defeat the demons that are plaguing the land of Esteria.
    Find out why this is such a beloved series and considered a bit of a cult classic JRPG series. I take a look at the complete story, the characters, the gameplay.

    Enjoy! In regards to Kirby it's going to be made in 3 parts, each of which will be available for Patreon supporters when ready. Once all 3 are complete, i'll mash 'em together and release publicly. So I'd expect a wait of 6 weeks or so for the full thing. Don't think I've disappeared.

    I know this is a bit late, but I'll say this anyway. Ys Origin is the game you want to play first after 1&2. It's a prequel that takes place hundreds of years back, and it explains pretty much everything in Ys 1&2, why you go certain places, why certain items are where they are, the characters, why a lot of things happen and more.
    Ys 1&2 is like walking through that ruined city and wondering just what happened to it 1000 years ago. Ys Origin puts you in that prime and shows you what happened.
    The rest of the Ys series follows up with Adol's adventures in other lands and only carry over a couple of plot points from the first 3 games (Ys 1&2+Origin), they're mostly their own stories.
    Looking forward to it!

    My only complaint is that there weren’t enough Dark Facts! 😂 great retrospective - not knowing anything about these games, I feel much more familiar with them now!
    Also, kudos to Brent for his 📖 reading! Although his voice is so close to mine I almost spit out my drink while watching during the first book, confused how Jordan had gotten a recording of me 😂 🦘

      Glad you enjoyed the readings. I wasn't aware that the books, in game, are read by an "old woman." I wish I would have given Jordan an old woman voice option. 👵 😂

    I found the best way to deal with the escort missions is to level up the person you're escorting. For Feena, you have to freeze the enemies using i believe it was a mirror, then walk her into the enemy to kill it. With Tarf, damage the enemy till it's almost dead then get Tarf to hit it with his slingshot. Once he levels up a bit, he kicks ass.

    One thing I don't think you touch on, is that the animated intro sequences were actually done by Makoto Shinkai very early in his career. He's since become one of the most popular anime film directors of all time. Like, Miyazaki big.

    I've played Ys 3-8. Your coverage of 1 & 2 has motivated me to give them a shot as they're not as antiquated as I thought they would be.
    Seeing the evolution of the series as you go from Ys 3-5, then 6, then 7-9 has been fun and educational for me. There was practically no bloat in 3-7 but man, 8 was padded out. Haven't played 9 yet but assume it's more of 8.

      9 is 8 but like 15 hours shorter, has wall running and a bunch of Easter eggs and in jokes. Raids are handled SIGNIFICANTLY better than 8. In many ways it’s better than Ys 8 but it’s also got a pretty grey and bland main hub surrounded by flatlands with nothing interesting in them, the plot is kind of weird and at times difficult to follow and the start of the game is reaaaaaaaally slow

    • @the9thinning1
      @the9thinning1 9 місяців тому +1

      that's funny you say that since it seems like ys 8 is the most popular/acclaimed one nowadays

    • @cdchai
      @cdchai 9 місяців тому

      @@the9thinning1 Doesn't mean there aren't flaws in the game.
      8 is a good game and a couple of steps up from 7 presentation wise. The story and gameplay continue the strong foundation of its predecessors. I'm a fan of the series.
      Now, I haven't played 8 in many a year so I can't point to specifics but the older games weren't noticeably padded and grinding was kept to a minimum. 8 though, definitely left the impression that the game had overstayed it's welcome.

    I replayed the games recently and that healing cape in ys 2 was really a pain to find, I knew it was in that area but couldn't find it anywhere. when my HP is very low I need to warp to village and lose my way all over again to finally reach the place where I was before, and I did that a lot of times and still hadn't found the cape, then I finally decided to search online for it. I think could have made it little more obvious.
    great video btw and keep up the good work. this video was so enjoyable that I watched the entirety of it and I hope you upload more ys retrospectives once you play more of it.

    You know, I wish the modern Ys games had more to do with the central lore of the Universe like the first too. Like all the stuff about demons and Goddesses and shit, now they’ve got nothing to do with anything that Ys one and two establish they’re just anthology stories about Adol whack hijinx that have absolutely nothing to do with anything and make the games feel like they don’t even take place in the same world. Which makes no sense at all.

    • @ABitMoreJordan
      @ABitMoreJordan  11 місяців тому

      Pity they don’t go further with that concept 😔

    • @t-universegamer7609
      @t-universegamer7609 5 місяців тому

      I feel like you're kind of missing the point of the series. Sure, the game *is* named Ys because of the land of the first two games, but even since the very first one, the point was always about Adol's adventures rather than the story of a single land. The manual for the original PC88 version even mentions his traveling journal, about all the lands he explored and even about his death while trying to climb a mountain. Games III through V have a bigger connection to the land of Ys because they were not developed by Falcom themselves, so I think it's pretty safe to say it was never their intention to stick with Esteria in the first place. I do understand your frustration over there not being more games taking place or directly having to do with the first two games, since they're very iconic and a lot of nostalgia value to them, but especially nowadays with all the in-universe lore build up, we've come to realize Ys and even the Goddesses themselves are but a small fragment of what the whole world of the series has to offer, and it would be too much of a waste to stick with a single country that's already got 3 games expanding on it's lore.
