Thanks for the video! Is the starter piece install before the flashing something you cut down yourselves? What material is it, it appears different than the base sheet?

you didn't heat the roll correctly, not enough heat, there should be a quarter in or a little bit more of a bleed out while unrolling the roll. only need to torch laps like that if you did not apply enough heat.

wait, at 3:37 you used a Timberline HD shingle upside down as a starter?
that strip at the top that prevents them from sticking to each other in the bundle, won't it also stop the first course from sticking to the "Starter"?
Also, I hate Ridgeglas capping, but overall, good job aside from the starter course thing

nope - that’s the way my father and grandfather used to shingle back in the day. if you do it that way, the starter shingle should be nailed into the fascia board to make sure it’s secure, and a small bead of plastic along the starter shingle before your first course to guarantee it will stick and stay. the adhesive on the GAF shingles themselves are very strong - it’s actually like PL Premium instead of just a tar strip like on other shingles.

@@nicktobin7208 I get that. I do it with a 3 tab shingles and using a 3 tab shingle for a starter with the Timberline. My points here were that 1, that timberline range had the plastic non stick strip at the top front side of the shingle, which would line up with the sealant strip, and the other point was that being a double layer shingle already, wouldn't it be too thick upside down as a starter? I think yes, although I've never used an architectural shingle as a Starter. Normally I use the Pro Start or the weather Blocker GAF make, or the Royal Sovereign
Roof laboring since 1986-88, been installing since 1988 - now,

@@agajohanna428 apologies my buddy. we’ve done a roof or two with the turned-around Timberline, and found that if you pull off the plastic strip that protects the stick, and you get a decent bit of sunlight on them, the Timberline actually stick a bit better than Weatherblocker. I won’t act like I know everything - my fathers been taking me roofing since 12, i’m 22 now, still learning new things.
On it being too thick - where it’s turned around, putting the single section on the eave/gable, then lay your first course (which would have the double on eave). it actually evens out, you don’t even notice the shingle as a starter!
If you have anymore questions feel free to ask, i quite like this discussion!

Thank you for this video. It helps me understand what the roofing process. Have an installation question for you. I am having a torch down roof installed on an addition to my house. The roof line of the addition cross a bathroom exhaust vent. I cannot move the exhaust vent up because there is a floor beam above it. The torch requires a 4" overlay or removal of some siding. This would cover up the vent. The roofer wants me to move before he comes to put the roof down. Any thoughts?

You didn't even melt the plastic on your cap so it's not adhere 100 percent more like 10 percent your cap is burnt and not only that you shingle a low slope roof too
