    I am passing on this for now. Last year I paid $69 for an upgrade from 5 to 6. This is just to big of an increase in cost and some additional features are tied to a Filmpack upgrade. Maybe black Friday will entice me, but not now.

    🔖 I'll update later when it's Black Friday. I’ll update only because they’ve finally moved the tools for working with local photo corrections *to the panel on the right.* These small menus right in the photo drove me crazy. And also because of the addition of different *photo display profiles.*

    Having to buy Filmpack to get luminosity masking in Photolab is, I think what my American friends call, gouging.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  Рік тому +1

      That is a strange set up. Though after watching the demo I don't really get what's so special about luminosity masking as both control line and control point already makes of luminosity to create their mask. Not totally sold on the idea but then again haven't use it 🙂

    • @jefflinsk8032
      @jefflinsk8032 11 місяців тому +2

      Gouging is what they do best. They don’t seem to appreciate that building a happy client base will pay dividends in the end. They should roll all this stuff together into a single reasonably priced and integrated product with nik and filmpack. Maybe then I’d pay 109 a year for upgrades to the whole kit. But the minor upgrades with high costs…multiplied by each product is a killer.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes it quickly spirals out of control if you add in pureraw, nik, filmpack along with photolab. Thankfully I have no urge for anything else except photolab 🙂They should have put the luminosity masking with photolab 7 though to make the upgrade more substantial.

    • @grahamf695

      @@takebetterphotos8132 I don’t think most people need all those products, as there is considerable overlap. However, now that Photolab has all but lost its lead on noise processing, the case for Lightroom is stronger. And Lightroom’s subscription cost is about the same as an annual upgrade of Photolab.

    Still Upoint selection. All the other features of PL, esp the raw conversion (it *is* a raw converter first, after all, not a photo editor lol), keep me with PL, but I seriously hate Upoint. I far prefer the way other apps handle this. And saying that adding a lot of overlapping control points to a single layer is better than having to work with layers is just trying to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse, IMO. I have never bought the Nik collection for that reason.
    I guess Upoint is their gimmick and lots of people love it, so we are stuck with it, but wow, I hate being forced to use it so bad that I do most of my work in Affinity Photo instead of in PL.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  Рік тому +1

      Hi there just to understand is it that upoint is innacurate or more complicated that you don't like it? Or is it that you just prefer brush?

    • @raylander6329
      @raylander6329 Рік тому +2

      Agree, the U point is pointless; Do not like it at all, probably the biggest complaint about this software

    • @caerolleclaudel1768
      @caerolleclaudel1768 Рік тому +1

      For example, often I want to select the whole image and narrow the selection by color. I guess I could paint the whole image with a mask, and then adjust the Chroma. I think the Control Line might work for this, but it applies as a gradient across the area where the mask will make changes. Really, other than the Gradient tool, this is my biggest gripe with Upoint, that a gradient in the mask is applied around the control point. Perhaps I am just not doing it right, I dunno, but I seem to always be fighting against the tools.
      Something I do a lot is to select color in an area of redness in a face, then adjust the range to narrow in on the redness I want to take out. I then use Saturation and tint/temp, whatever it is in the app, to take out the redness. Of course, this also affects many areas where I do not want to make any changes, with the lips usually being strongly affected. In my image editing app (Affinity Photo; AP ) I can just paint over the areas I want to exclude and get what I want. Plus there are other options for selection that I can use, too.
      So, mostly what I do is the conversion and some initial global adjustments in PL, such as tonal adjustments and white balance, and then do all the more detailed work in AP. Perhaps I am just expecting far too much of a raw conversion app, and honestly I have not trialed any of the others in years; I never found anything that did the things I find most important in a raw converter as well as PL. I am unlikely to ever look elsewhere again, even though I think perhaps Lightroom (not an option at all, I intensely dislike Lr and Adobe) and Capture One (also not an option, too expensive) are incorporating AI, I assume to make selections. But I wish the local adjustment tools made more sense to me.
      Sorry this was so long. And perhaps I am just an idiot and have no idea how to use Upoint correctly. In my defense, I *have* read stuff on it, many times, and still find it frustrating.
      Thanks! :) @@takebetterphotos8132

      @caerolleclaudel1768 Рік тому +1

      I forgot to mention, I do love the Luminosity tool! Just awesome. Now if there were something for color; I think you can subtract from the mask to isolate the areas where you want to apply changes.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  Рік тому +1

      Appreciate the the long post. You explained your issue very well! 🙂 I get that the gradient nature of control point is not what should be used.
      However DXO's does have a masking brush (which does not use a gradient) and in PL7 it can do local color adjustments -- meaning you can paint on the face and make specific color changes to a shade of red. Maybe give that a try.
      Do note thought that one drawback though of the masking brush as it visually does not represent what is really being selected. Unlike AP which has clear marching ants around a selection.

    I'll consider upgrading if the price drops, or if they add a diffusion control to local adjustments like they included in the recent Nik update. Otherwise, the changeset doesn't seem like enough to justify the upgrade cost for me as someone who primarily shoots underwater nature photography.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  Рік тому +1

      Yes I came to the same conclusion. Not enough wow features. But maybe the change in interface took more time than expected or they focused on Nik or their other software this time. For underwater photography I suppose you use their clearview a lot?

    • @Kamaros
      @Kamaros Рік тому

      @@takebetterphotos8132 Yes, if the situation calls for it. Typically, this is when my subject or important background elements are more than a meter away, as water absorbs colour and reduces contrast, and around 1m is where the effects start becoming more apparent. For most wide-angle shots, I'll leave the slider around 10-25ish because I find that ClearView starts introducing unnatural looking amounts of saturation and contrast at higher settings. Conversely, I rarely use ClearView when I'm shooting underwater macro photography because there's very little distance (and thus less water) between the camera and subject.

Yes as someone who has used v5, v6, and v7 I think v5-v7 is well worth the upgrade just for the denoise and new local adjustments panel. I also found they fixed bugs in their control line in v7 which used to make strange errors in v6 but now does not.

      good stuff. I had been holding out esp since I no longer do photography regularly. Got Photolab 7 last night at the upgrade price. And yes i'm not surprised there are bug fixes not mentioned.
      Looking at a couple of reviews of "whats new" in ver 7, it seems to me v7 is merely the continuation of on going development since the last major upgrade. Version 5 saw significant features. Version 6 added better denoise and now in v. 7 we see further refinement of those features as well as bug fixes.
      Their "payment model" is as close to a subscription service without actually being one. So I decided to "upgrade" every other year. I think their "upgrade price" only applies if you are no more than two versions behind. So If I didn't upgrade from v5 to v7, once v8 comes out I will have to pay full price.

      Yes apparently only 2 year old will get a discount. Not sure why they do it this way

      @@takebetterphotos8132 Sounds like a good idea, I like what they have done with the latest versions. Thank you.

      From version 3 to version 7 is four generations of differences that is an enormous upgrade

      Yes big upgrade indeed. I have no clue how v3 even works. I started with v5.

    I loved DXO photolab 5......bought the upgrade to 6......it wouldn't install. I run windows 10, but for what ever reason.....and I've tried for years, it simply won't update to 20h2 or higher.....it just won't do it....went to install photolab 6.....won't install as my version of windows isn't high enough.......sorry photolab....after spending over $100 on the upgrade, I can't buy another version.....as you simply have some arbitrary code on the install that won't let me install the program.

      Just to understand it wouldn't install because of your version of Windows? What version of Windows are you using? Did you check with the DXO helopdesk on this?

      @@takebetterphotos8132 I've been trying for years to update windows, it'll do partial updates etc, but could never get from 1909 to ie 20h2, or 22h2 etc......everything on my computer works (for work), every driver runs fine, their is no reason to ie format everything and stop a perfectly good 1950 threadripper, 64gb ram and a 3080 from ie doing anything. The only issue I have is, everything works on my pc, but I simply can't install dx06......so not even going to try dx07.....5 works great, every new game, anything just works.......some arbitary limit with dxo to stop me from installing a newer version when I'd guess that it would work any way is just stupid (in my opinion).....just my 2 cents.

      That is very strange. It certainly is not your hardware! In any case you can always download the trial (30 days). Perhaps they've fixed all the issues. Usually it is older hardware that makes DXO slow.

    I've found myself using PL6 mostly for preparing images (mostly denoising, modifying tone/exposure, perspective correction) before moving them to Radiant Photo (which I've come to really like). I agree that PL7 doesn't seem a big enough step forward from PL6 for the price that's being asked. A little disappointed. Nice shot of Little India in Singapore, BTW

      Thank you. An old photo I finally got some use for 🙂 Yes pl7 feature set is head scratchingly sparse. Perhaps the "real" features didn't get finished in time. DXO does make sure everything is polished before releasing;
