    The thing I've noticed with Murphy is that he seems to have a fascination with serial killers, to the point where I feel like he's telling these stories because he gets off on them. I watched Monster/Dahmer and then I tried to watch AHS:NYC, but I couldn't get past the first episode because it felt like a mere extension of Monster. Then I started thinking about the Halloween dinner scene in AHS:Hotel, and the whole Richard Ramierez plotline in AHS:1984, and it became very apparent to me that Murphy has a personal obsession with this subject matter.

    I will never forgive them for the switch to digital with Glee - when they were shooting on film and it had that grainy look that every other show (except The Walking Dead) was turning away from, it felt so nostalgic and kind of placed it within that 90s, 00s washy teen genre in aesthetic, whilst in content having something distinctly unique

    Couple notes: Nip/Tuck may seem ‘normal’ on paper, and even by today’s standards, but the show itself was anything but. There were insane plotlines, serial killers and fairly dark & morally complex main characters. It was the direct ancestor to every future, non-Glee (tho, some could make the argument that it’s included as well) Ryan Murphy project. Second, the insane Cop Rock was the first musical series. Finally, Dark Shadows was the first full-on horror series. Other than that, interesting video!

Not that I have an issue with the main character being gay but it made it hard to watch. Also my dad walked in as I’m watching it and he’s just like wtf. Loved older seasons of AHS and wasn’t really into glee. I liked parts of Hollywood but it was like a 5 out of 10. I think Murphy got talent but hit or miss

    • @fromthehaven94
      @fromthehaven94 2 роки тому +2

      I think the "gay" stuff with ACS Versace came with the territory, though at times it was grandiose and/or lacked subtlety, depending on the episode. One of the victims served in the military under Don't Ask Don't Tell. And while it may have been embellished in the second, the authorities were primarily not quick to present relevant details. What I liked most about ACS Versace was how the storylines of Versace and the Killer were presented. Concurrently showing the killer's story mostly going backwards while Versace is shown during his life, from the alleged first meeting in San Francisco with the man who would later kill him.

    This is a small issue but it bothered me so much when watching assassination of gianni versace that all the main italian characters were never shown speaking italian to each other. I always find it bizarre when this happens in tv and movies but it really pulls me out of the moment when characters who clearly speak another language are shown instead speaking english in thick accents. Am i supposed to believe that Donatella and Gianni Versace only spoke english to each other even in private? My frustration with this increased tenfold when they showed the flashback of young versace in school speaking english with a (in my opinion) terrible italian accent IN ITALY. it was very jarring and strange especially in a show that's supposed to be about real people. I wonder if hollywood thinks audiences won't read subtitles or something.

  • @lisahoshowsky4251

    Ryan Murphy has a new show out this season called Grotesquerie and from my perspective it’s in a lot of ways just him putting the tiniest distance between himself and AHS but it’s a show that really wouldn’t have felt out of place in the AHS anthology, especially in the earlier days before they became a seemingly connected universe. I’m actually a little surprised how many people are getting into the show knowing it’s a Ryan Murphy one and how they usually end….. it’s also extremely confusing in a way where people assume it’s going to lead up to a twist but I think writing in a way where people can’t tell if it’s bad writing or a lead up is still bad writing, just for a different reason.
    This video is so astute and yet we’re three years out from it and he still made another 2 season of AHS and now this “new” show🙃 I don’t know who’s pocket he’s in or if it’s just a symptom of Hollywood liking to go with “safe” “known” entities but I’d love to see this budget put towards a fresh horror series and for people to stop letting him put his grubby little hands on other series that were doing fine without him in the pilot seat.

      Also, it’s not that I absolutely hate him, I find a lot of shows he attached to an entertaining watch, I just think he’s worthy of critique like anyone else and I find it interesting how he seems to have a pattern that’s allowed to continue when many others would have been cut off or re-routed years ago by the Hollywood machine.

    Enjoyed American Crime Story 1-2-3 equally and differently.. Why should they be or look the same anyway ? Not like every AHS season had to be the same. Enjoyed Slasher country season as much as coven or Murder House.
    Campy ? fine with me. Male flesh ? why not, nothing wrong with it.
    Pose? genius.
    Dont think Cunanan ever was in the public eye, before he died. (compared to say OJ simpson or Marcia). So yeah you got to fill it in, and it doesn't have to BE the same show. It's an anthology.
    As for the "general opinion" - since when did the General opinion or even the general reviewers - every picked up on something ever on their own?
    Long live the new Ryan Murphy flesh.

    No shade but ryan is super bad at finalizing his endeavors. He is super great at a season + 2, 3, and maybe 4 but then flat lines. I get it everyones out for a buck, but he needs to take a step back. We have all seen it with nip tuck, glee, and now importantly AHS. Ryan read this take the black pill from red tide maybe you can actually finish something you started. Take the black pill

    I just realized that most of my favorite shows/ films/ series I have watched in the past were produced by Ryan Murphy. Like my first series I ever got into was Nip Tuck and Glee. Then I really loved all the American crime stories especially the assassination of Versace. They were all so good! When I started getting hooked on AHS seasons I looked up the producer because I was like this producer is so talented. After looking Ryan up I wanted to see other films and other work he has done and found out almost ALL of my most favorite shows I have watched were produced by him. And I was so shocked because I had no clue. I am definitely a super fan and would watch anything he produces. He is so talented. ❤❤

    I just realized why on earth didn’t he make the Menéndez story an American crime story? Like why did he put them right after to the serial killer other than to further more certainly destroy how the public views them ??

    There was a show similar in premise to Popular around the same time (or maybe earlier, like before 90210) with Barbara Eden where these two girls (Jennie garth and shawnee Smith, the girl from Becker). There parents I think met on a cruise ship or vacation, they married and the girls hated each other. The show didn't last long I don't think. But I was a fan. (I mean come on, Barbara Eden)
    1989. Brand New Life. They didn't meet on a cruise ship, the mom was a waitress and the man was wealthy. But they must have went on a cruise or something, lol.

    I was wondering why you skipped Dahmer and Monsters and then realised this was posted 4 years ago! Well, I actually felt like Ratched was much like AHS Seasons 1-3 and that was good to experience (personally i would reccommend for AHS fans) but everything else in Ryan Murphy's filmography has just gotten worse.

    I would expect a white youtuber to give credit to Ryan Murphy for the parody movie trend and completely ignore the Wayans Brothers. Not Another Teen Movie couldn't have happened without Scary Movie

    • @TommyStubbs
      @TommyStubbs  3 роки тому +5

      I didn't give him credit for the trend, I said his show was inspired by parodying the teen film genre of the time and that parodying those films became a whole film genre in it of itself. Not saying he created that genre, just that absurdist humor and poking fun at those films was trendy during the time of his show Popular.

      I never watched Popular, the show that is focused on early in this video, but the parody apparently was on a different level than Scary Movie/Not Another Teen Movie would be. And the Wayans Brothers didn't create parody movies. Scary Movie primarily parodies Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, not teen movies in general.
