One of the more interesting mechanics in BAR is the flanking system. The first time a unit takes damage, it activates directional armor that reduces further damage by 10% in a narrow cone facing its attacker. But if enemies attack from the sides or behind, they inflict up to 190% extra damage as the angle of attack approaches 180 degrees from that point. You can activate a widget in the advanced game options that lets you see these directional armor points as they appear and fade again. This means that zerg-swarming with many infantry bots/light tanks, just as an example, can rapidly chew apart even heavier units; the basic "Pawn" infantry bot has 100 DPS and that can nearly double PER UNIT if they get a flank on their target. This works for ANYTHING, units AND structures. You can even game this to one-shot things you wouldn't normally one-shot, such as stabbing a higher-health unit from one side and then blasting it with a Sniper Bot from the other side.
This brings back Memories with the Spring Project engine, Zero-K, team battles and the countless reimagined games using a total annihilation style engine

TA one pf my favorite games of all time. The models in BAR look almost identical to TA (those solar and metal extractors, missile turrets and laser light turrets). I’ll definitely try this.
Wow it seems like the first TA like game that actually captures the feel of units. I could never really get into supcom because units felt I don't know how to call it but just swarmy. Aside of experimental units early gamę units had barely any staying power and didn't roam that much so it was micro intensive while in TA you could throw them at each other out of production line and it felt like Neverending battle, wrecks becoming real obstacles. It's really hard to explain what I mean but the pacing here is what I was looking for.
Amazing work. Total Annihilation was such an incredible game. Great gameplay vid too ;) Loved your reaction when the T3 tank fired haha. Here's to 1997 game design and the legends at Cavedog. EDIT: This also made me want to go back and listen to the TA music, which I recall being beautiful. TA sound design was also incredible. Bring that grinding metal walk of the Can and terrifying cacophonous thunder of Big Bertha ;)
This game gives me nostalgic memories of spirited debates in Cavedog's old forums. If any members of the old Total Annihilation Evaluation Crew are out there and you see this, please DM me. We need to have a reunion in this game.
TA is my all time favourite RTS.. Nothing will ever take its place.. I was at the public library every Friday to download the extra free units. This game looks SO amazing. Also, as mentioned, I remember the action queuing as one of the most awesome things. Just SHIFT-CLICK on that and that and this and build here.. It was super good. Will be on my "must check out" list.

Omg I loved TA! It was the only RTS where you could take ordnance from The bombers and “fling” your bombs physically across your target with out having to fly over them. I dont know why but this reminds me of "Machines" RTS game way way back when, what amazing games this genre can push out at times, even classic C&C generals is still often a great joy to just play and enjoy the chaos.
When you mentioned the running on multiple monitors, it made me think of my biggest complaint about some of these massive scale games. They put so much work into the detail of units and terrain that gets lost because you spend all of your time zoomed out to manage the overall combat. Games in the Warhammer universe and Wargame come to mind.
This is one of the things we think BAR does differently than other RTS games with strategic zoom. Same issue with this game that I have with Planetary Annihilation: scale. When my units are supposed to be multiple buildings tall but can only shoot a few yards away, it makes everything feel tiny even when you've got truly massive battles going on.
Never played TA, but I saw BAR about 9 months ago, started playing it and it's just so good. Fun, fast paced, Lots of depth without being mechanically overwhelming, so much room for skill growth. Love it, highly recommend. Best RTS I've played in years.
I recommend you try zero-k. A cousin of BAR. Uglier and less faithfull to TA however it will blow your mind how many unique features there is. Just the fact you can terraform, throw units off ramps, lvl up the commander with perks and weapons and many more unique stuff is mind blowing for an RTS.

Reminds me a lot of a game on steam called Zero-k In the fact that this clearly uses the same engine as zero-k as I recognize things from the menu to the gameplay and even the chicken mode. Different approach I suppose. Would have to give it a try to see how it compares

I played TA from the age of 5 to about 12 when i got into fps games. This is so awesome to watch. Im seeing direct callbacks to the old game. The two factions ARMada and COREtex seem to stick with the theme of the ARM having a much more practical design philosophy and the CORE looking a lot more complex with moving parts to achieve similar goals. I saw a lot family units starting off with the Solar Collectors, L.L.Ts, the Defender, Thunderers, the Fido, the iconic PeeWees and A.K.s moonlighting as Pawns and Grunts, you guys even brought by the Maverick! Same issue with this game that I have with Planetary Annihilation: scale. When my units are supposed to be multiple buildings tall but can only shoot a few yards away, it makes everything feel tiny even when you've got truly massive battles going on.
Try "Supreme commander"
its old but still great
@@flogruchot4363 Yup, one of my favorites -- hoping Sanctuary satisfies the itch.
dude i use to watch my dad play Total Annihilation when i was a toddler
seeing this video title gave me glee
Oh shit no way TA
I've been following Beyond All Reason for a while now. It's wonderful that you're putting a spotlight on it because seemingly nobody knows about it.
This gives me huge Zero-K vibes.
BAR and ZK runs on the same engine so... rightfully so :)
Yeah same engine. Same inspiration and roots. Zero-K is more mature and complete though.. BAR only just coming up to public eye
@@jacksheldon8566 Sounds pretty dope. I'll check it out.
Anyone remember TA: kingdoms?
omg not till just now. 🤣
@@CaptainShack you can surprising still play it someone uploaded it and the nocd patch to a dedicated website for it
4:30 my favorite tactic in early game TA was the "ghetto gunship". Fill a flying transport with tier 1 walkers and they could fire at enemies while in flight before anybody else got to tier 2 to get real gunships.
Sup Com 2023?
All these features are part of Sup Com Forged Alliance but still cool to see.
Sup com doesn’t have a number of features that bar and zerok has
Auto groups line orders to name a few
@@drivver4470 well sure but I didn’t watch the whole thing yet
@@LRocks1000 He doesn't use most of the cool features in the game because he's brand new. I'd suggest watching gameplay from more skilled players to see what is really possible.
Been playing this for a minute now. Best RTS game out there.
Thanks for making this video I almost immediately downloaded this when I heard it was free. It seems really fun I’ve always wanted to play a supreme commander style game, but never got into it. I am excited.
oh my god i didn't know total anialation was even known these days, TA was my first RTS just watchign shak i see shak start adn i'm like oh my god it's the arm shak is playing ARM
Some people in this comment section seem not aware that this is a fan made remake of a game called Total Annihilation, and they cant sell it as people suggesting or would be problems with IP owners. instead if you want to support the devs, they going give optional donations, by making it free their no legal issues of a fan made old IP, it similar to what was called spring. Stop asking for it to cost money or judge it as a new game it not, it a fan made remake, mainly the next level of spring.
Had my 5 year old playing total annihilation today. I remember being young and going to kb toys with my grandma. She let my brother and I pick something. We decided to buy a big box game called total annihilation. It was a good decision. This game is one of my favorites games ever made. I'm excited to try this!
YO! I didn't know there is a fan game like Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander series. Thank you for covering this! Hope this project goes well, listed on steam, etc.
This is crazy cool, funny because I just loaded up the original TA with the escalations mod this past weekend and it still plays beautiful.
I'm 100% getting Total Annihilation vibes off this. And I loved that game. Nothing like building a few Big Bertha's and hitting the enemy base from across the map.
As a years-long spring engine fan, it feels great to see BAR getting the attention it deserves
You actually played it! Hype. I knew BAR would be right up your alley. ^ ^
Glad you've been enjoying it.
Reminds me a lot of a game on steam called Zero-k
In the fact that this clearly uses the same engine as zero-k as I recognize things from the menu to the gameplay and even the chicken mode.
Different approach I suppose. Would have to give it a try to see how it compares
Even the file loading looks the same
@@papascrumpeeh admittedly Zero-K does take the "Throw eveyr thing and the kitchen sink" in syndrome with just how many units, unit types and such it has.
Mechanics for modifying terrain, jumping robot facotry, cloak/light robot factory, shield/heavy bot factory. Amphibious robot factory.
Flying gunship factory, plane factory
Car factories or "Rovers" or whatever... it's been a while since I played it.
Tank factory
Just, literally every thing and more packed in.
@@typhoon1575 aye haha all matches ended up in absolute chaos , with my friend used to play against the chickens it was hysterical damn it feels nostalgic 😆
@@papascrumpeeh oh yea it was fun for sure.
I have now given beyond all reason a couple hours of playtime. It feels pretty good.
And actually doesn't just feel like zero-k with less features
More focused but allows for the same amount of end game chaos.
Still need to put time in it but it might be better.
@@typhoon1575 Ah I see gonna give it a try too , have fun man!
I would totally watch more of this!
This takes me back!! I'm going to pick this up as soon as I can!
ive had tons of fun with it, and they keep getting more and more updates.
I played Total Annihilation back when it came out and I loved that game. Definitely checking this out. I miss nanolithing
Oh boy a decent RTS, those are rare these days, I loved TA and Supcom back in the day, and the Supcom FAF before that shot itself lol, yet to find a worthy successor
«shot itself» ?
@@BlueTemplar15 Too many changes, it's gone from a really good grand RTS to a seemingly starcraft meta clone where unless you do a select few steps at the beginning you've lost at the 5 minute mark and the rest of the 1+ hour gameplay is just a slow defeat
been following BAR for a long time it's such a great game :D
I loved Total Annihilation. Was 1 of my favourite RTS games and always wished more updates or content came out.
After that showing, I definitely want to see more!
I don't play rts but this looks sick. I'm gonna look up and see if there's tournaments to watch after this.
Appreciate the gameplay, learned about something cool I didn't know existed.
Great review, but did you mess the best part?! TA D-GUN!!!
The classic TA still works today in 2023.
I use a nocd crack due to not having a permanent DVD drive in my PC.
But its still a great game.
I’ve played a lot of zero-K, and a lot of the gameplay aspects and controls/abilities, and it makes it look so familiar yet different.
I often assign 4-5 construction vehicles to support each factory
Build builder turrets instead
@@jacksheldon8566 Oh, cool. Those didn't exist in Supreme Commander or Planetary Annihilation AFAIK.
@@Trifler500 FTU had them
Starcraft had NOT in fact come out. It's from 1998, while TA is from 1997. Which is very interesting.
total annihilation was and still is one of my favorite rts. Forged Alliance forever.
OMG, Supreme Commander 1-2 is my most loved RTS, i have huge nostalgy from this video
Thanks Capt!!! Just caught this,…my son and I will be downloading this tonight!!!!!
Looooved TA! Appreciate you bringing this game to my attention!
I saw what looked to be a tank based off the Luger medium art tank. Even the maps are super reminiscent of the maps from the original TA. Ill definite by looking into this more.
