    Factoid: Back in 1982 (same year this movie was released), the "Academy Awards" refused to nominate "Tron" for the Special Effects Awards Category due to movie makers using computers to create these effects. The Academy believed this was 'cheating'. In effect, they were 'disqualified'. Nowadays, CGI is used in almost every movie to a certain extent.

      Never know that. And now we have a award for best visual effects. Shame it got screwed over. Didn't Raiders of the Lost Ark in that year? I think Tron would have easily beat it in that category if it were allowed.

      There is NO WAY to get one to understand what was felt by the more 'nerdy' of us when in the 80's the trailers for this dropped in theaters. Until technology advances so far that in the future you'll have to try the same explanation to your grand kids whom don't even acknowledge TRON Legacy.

      What a lot of people also don't know is that the film was manufactured in bulk and the spools of film to be used were numbered to be recorded upon in numerical order, but the production crew ended up just grabbing random reels to load into the cameras. That's why the movie had that intermitted flash in random scenes. When the film was manufactured in bulk, and the film was spliced into smaller reals to fit into the production cameras, the areas of the film where the splices were made, the "shading" of the film would match, but only if used in order that it was cut, but when the crew grabbed random reels, certain scenes would produce a random flash because the film negative's "shading" at the splice didn't match. Not to be confused with the flash lines that would appear on the walls at random.

    Tron isn’t the greatest movie ever made, but it is the movie that inspired me to study computer animation.
    A couple of abstract things about it that can be confusing to the first time viewer:
    - to most programs, users are essentially the gods who created them. The MCP tries to claim users are a “superstitious and hysterical belief”, partly as a method of control and partly because it believes it has grown beyond the comprehension of any user (“No one user wrote me, I’m worth millions of their man-years”). Also, when Ram dies, he smiles because he’s basically looking at the face of God.
    - As a user in the computer world, Flynn has almost godlike powers: restoring the Recognizer, creating a junction to another beam, surviving the deresolution of Sark’s carrier, and bringing Yori back from deresolution. Some things that would kill a regular program don’t faze him.

    • @jacob4920
      @jacob4920 2 роки тому +6

      Yeah, I don't blame Yori at all for basically "cheating" on Tron, by kissing Flynn. If I were a program-chick, I'd probably kiss him too. lol

    • @sempervigilo7961
      @sempervigilo7961 2 роки тому +12

      @@jacob4920 Try and look at it this way, "kissing" is an unknown thing to programs, so Yori has no real idea what it means beyond an expression of friendship by a User. She later shares this new information with Tron, who is both surprised and delighted by it.

    3d animation software didn't exist at that time so the animators at Disney had to see a test reel, determine what they wanted to change, calculate all the coordinates for all the elements, write all those numbers down on paper and fedex all that paper to the specialized computer company that rendered the animation. Wait for the new reel to arrive by post and repeat.

      I was a bit over 2 years in and saw this at a theater near NASJAX. Interesting that our command had just received an experimental computer system designed to combine radar signals from a couple coastal locations into a single information stream to be displayed on a CRT with CG symbols and maps, replacing the much older Single Long Range Array left by the Air Force with had been in use since the commands inception. On 3rd watch when there was no warning area traffic to monitor, I'd play with one of the stations seeing what it could do. Yes - I made a crude 'oval track map' and used the simulated aircraft commands to 'fly' a CG target around the track. The 'guys' upstairs noticed my interest in learning the system and approved. So it's a no-brainer when this movie came out I WAS in line.

Watched this movie when I was very young so didn't remember it all that much, but again when I was in college, after I took a Machine/Assembly programming course, and it was interesting to think of some of the interactions as certain chip commands or processes. "End of Line" is kinda funny, because it basically indicates the end of a command. OG Tron certainly paved the way for many movies to come. Legacy is a massive upgrade. I often listen that OST when I work. Might queue it up today, in fact.

    I watched this when it was first released in theaters. The computer world was still being created then and the concept of machines taking over was played out many times. This was timed good because all of us were dropping quarters into video arcade machine as fast as we could and the idea there was an alternate world inside them was kinda mind blowing. There were still single screen theaters when this played I saw it in one. The multi-plex type was spreading but hadn't wiped out the huge single theaters completely then.

    This movie and Something Wicked This Way Comes did so poorly in the theater that Disney had to consider bankruptcy. It was made for an older audience but since it was Disney, adults thought the movies were for kids and didn't go. It helped lead to the creation of Touchstone Pictures so Disney could release more adult oriented movies. Another cool thing is in one of the solar sail scenes you can see Mickey's head on the ground below.

    I'm glad you enjoyed that Mary Cherry. It's always great so see younger generations reacting and reviewing some of my old favorites. Tron is an essential sci-fi classic. It wasn't as well recieved when it first came out but it's become more appreciated over time. It is very unique and original and quite stylish too. As old as the effects are it still looks fantastic. Sometimes the story goes over some folks heads but if you closely follow it, it's not too hard to understand what it's about. There's some clever symbolism here and at the same time, it's a lot of fun. They don't make movies like this anymore.

    Tron was epic for its time. Imagine 40 years ago a year before the video game crash of 1983. A time of Pizza parlors and arcade games this movie captured that essence. Tron Legacy is visually stunning as well. It fleshes out the grid much more but Tron is my favorite.

    It hurts to know that many millennials and Gen Z's never had the pleasure to see this film on the big screen when it first came out. It is definitely a film to watch on a Blu-Ray player for it is a very colorful movie. Remember that this in one of the earliest CGI computer graphics films at the time. It's tame (or for some, lame) nowadays because of the advanced computer graphic designs we have today but for 1982, it was mesmerizing! You should also see "The Lawnmower Man" (1992), based on the Stephen King novel. It's a film where the highly talked about concept of virtual reality became a big thing on the big screen. 💡

    It's fun to sneer at the surface of "Tron" from our place in the distant future, but I have to admire the ambition behind trying to dramatize concepts that were unimaginable to a movie audience in the late '70s/early '80s. They made an honest and I think rather noble attempt to do something different with this - at Disney, of all places.

It had Tron on the cover in full digital uniform. I was hooked. I bought the book. I waited and got the movie promo magazine, full of explanations and cgi photos. Then I got to see the movie. I was disappointed, because the projectors weren't bright enough to display the movie properly. It was very dim. Fortunately it came out on that RCA disc format and I bought a player at Radio Shack. I then bought Tron and Star Wars. I watched them over and over.

    Back in the 80's, Tron had 2 real-life games in the arcade. One was Discs Of Tron where you had to dodge discs and hit your opponents with yours to advance. The other was Tron where you had 4 missions (one was Light-Cycle, another was Tank Battle)... The rock band Journey that has two songs on Tron's soundtrack also got their own video game in the 80's!.... Side note: I still have the children's storybook adaption of this movie

    Yay, Tron! Not exactly a great movie per se, but very influential. You picked up a lot on its legacy as seen in modern films, but it also holds a special place in my heart. I never got to see it in theaters, but I watched it on TV around 1984 or so. It had a huge impact on me in terms of special effects and 3D computer graphics, and was sort of the second part of a one-two punch with Star Wars. These two together are what got my into computer graphics, and thus my current career. I made more iterations of that light cycle racing game than I can count on one hand: in 2D first, as it was depicted in the "real world" in the movie, and then in 3D as the programs experienced it on the game grid, and most recently in VR.
    End of digression.
