A horn teacher once told me that great tone is characterized by having a beautiful start and intonation to your notes. Her tone is very defined by these qualities for which she does an amazing job at both.
Playing french horn definitely takes some skill, and a ton of practice for performance music. This is beautiful. Not only the soloist, but the entire group. Beautiful.
Well done, Katerina. That sweep to the high B-flat at 8:06 was so sweetly perfect, and as musically emotional as any horn player could aspire to play it! There are many notes, transitions and technical iterations to a performance, but those brilliant defining moments really express the beauty inside. Bravo my dear... a special performance indeed and this achievement will persist for a lifetime and beyond for future generations to appreciate.

I have been listening to this concerto for over 60 years and this version is the one I will return to before any other! All other versions are loaded with testosterone which suits the first concerto but not this one written in the same period as the four last songs and the Weltschmert near the end of the war. The words that come to mind are Feminine, Serene, graceful,-exquisite.l " A chipped not is trivial, playing without passion in unforgivable" Beethoveen
I thought this was a really nice interpretation of the piece. Very good technique, too. Just a couple of chipped notes (for those of you who play the horn, you are probably more forgiving of that than perhaps others). For the interpretation, I tend to put Dennis Brain and Radek Baborak at perhaps two ends of a spectrum. Brain plays it light, even playful, and with the orchestra. Baborak plays it a little heavy, more mechanically, and on top of the orchestra. Katerina Javurková seems to be playing more at the Dennis Brain end of that spectrum, although perhaps a bit slower and more dramatic in places. Just a real nice performance.
Dennis Brain had a broken matchstick in his first valve slide, to damp a common oddball disturbing resonance in even the best of horns, even in her Alexander 103 !!. The opening triple jump fanfare is so smooth and cool, my jaw dropped when I heard it for the first time! She moves her body in prefect synchrony with the flow of the music. No composer in the last 200 years IMHO has written slow movements the way Strauss has. I would fly to Prague to hear her play Ausklang at the end of the Alpine Symphony. An added bonus is the ensemble, each member of which seems to have their hearts in it, not just workers on an assembly line ! Other performers juice the pace up to see who can play the most notes in the least time'- not this angel. As a last comment, the recording engineers have placed the mikes and set the balance perfectly ! 1
A well framed performance, the opening was full of body, the tone was full and wonderful during the performance. During the last movement where she brings in the Ist subject of the 1st move, abit week. Well done, an English horn player.ads
As a horn player I thoroughly admire the technique; but the sound down low is just SPECTACULAR. If I didn't know that the sound is the player, I'd be asking that novice question of "What kind of horn and what mouthpiece are you using?" ..... but i won't. She would sound just as good on my horn.

I imagine the judges reserve awarding first place for contestants who are at the level of getting paid to play this as a guest artist? There were tons of things that didn't go that well in her performance here, especially in the Rondo. Don't get me wrong, she did great, but this is about the same level of performance as a senior recital usually is at a major US conservatory, or about where you need to be for a solid grad school audition. I also don't know how old these kids are during this competition, but I assume they're pre-conservatory, which makes it pretty darn impressive since I surely wasn't playing this well in high school. It was probably junior or senior year of conservatory before I could play the Strauss at this level.
There were 5-10 mistakes and split notes. Maybe that could have been the difference. Perhaps the individuality is not there? There wasn't any fortissimo when phrases needed to be at the pinnacle of expression. A breadth was take in the entry phrase which most elite players like Radek Baborak would not have taken.
I cry cause I could have been there in that horn solo position. Unfortunately my Dad wasn't there to place a boot in my ass whenever I felt like giving up. Gotta blame somebody right? Fuck that. I wish I hadn't have given up on the Horn. I was so good at it. I loved it. I want to do it again.

How old are the kids in this competition? I wasn't playing the Strauss anywhere close to this well until a few years into conservatory.
