Just had to replace the hdd with ssd and works like a charm.
Also just a while back put thermal paste on the processor.

My hp 15 ac 179tx 8+ years , still going strong.
Some upgrades I have done over the years.
ram from 4gb ddr3 to 16gb ddr3 dual channel.
1tb HDD to sata SSD.
speakers changed (inr600) due to faulty speakers,
battery replaced,
recently hinge broke and it took the screen with it.
Replaced the hinge and got new screen(which is better than the old one, this new one is IPS, old one was TN panel)
Remember to regularly clean the laptop. Also change the thermal paste every 1-2 year according to your usage. I changed the thermal paste (Arctic mx-4) temps were down almost 20-30 degrees under load. Now I can play a lot of games, edit videos smoothly.
Previously thermal throttling was regular occurrence. Either do it yourself or go to your local computer shop for this. Try to use good quality thermal paste, may be bring with you Arctic mx-4, or other high quality thermal paste.

My laptop is 10 years old. Dell inspiron 3542, pentium processor @1.70hz, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd.
It has become hell slow that my browser crashes if i open more than 5 tabs due to lag.

I know the processor is really old, but. I played so many old games on low or medium settings, like Batman 3, GTA 4, Tomb Raider, Outlast 1 and 2, Witcher 2, Dying Light, Life is Strange, Batman Arkham City, Bioshock, and more.
If you have an old laptop and now you are currently using a new laptop or desktop,. You can use the old laptop as a secondary monitor.

I am running 2014 lenovo G5080 till date. All thing happened you told in this video. With Ubuntu 24.04 it is way faster that my 2022 dell Vostro on Win11.
currenty using dell inspiron 5567 purchased in 2017. So using it for 7 years and still working fine. i upgraded it by changing its 2tb hdd with 512gb ssd and changed the battery and now its woking fine with great speed. currently watching this video from the same laptop only. And I am a web developer and use vs code ms sql mongodb atlas and many more software and also using windows 11 stable latest version and working smoothly. It has i5 7th gen and 8gb ram. So in my opinion easily anyone can use a laptop for 10 years easily. And so if anyone has budget issue and wants a cheap laptop, instead of going for a cheap brand new laptop, a second hand high power laptop from reputed shop is much better to buy and use.
