  • Professor Steven Kivelson of the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Physics (SITP) introduces the physics of supercondictivity and condensded matter physics.
Superconductivity is perhaps the most spectacular macroscopic quantum phenomenon. A “persistent current” in a ring of superconducting wire will continue to flow forever - a laboratory realization of perpetual motion. A voltage across a junction between two superconductors produces an oscillating current with a frequency that is determined exactly by the voltage and the fundamental constant of quantum mechanics, Planck’s constant. Superconductivity is the quintessential example of an “emergent phenomenon” in physics, in which the collective behavior cannot be understood in terms of the properties of any finite collection of microscopic constituents (i.e. electrons). Notable physicists including Einstein, Heisenberg, and Feynman tried and failed for half a century to achieve the basic understanding of superconductivity that was only achieved in the mid 1950’s and early 1960’s. However, many fundamental issues remain to be resolved, including those related to the more recent discovery of unconventional “high temperature superconductivity” in a variety of synthetic metals and the construction of coherent superconducting “Q-bits” which act as laboratory realizations of Schrodinger’s cat.

This goes with that, point of view.
Quanta, Majorana and symmetry breaks are images of 1-0D or 0-1D limit state. All else is phase phenomena.(?) The ultra long duration of superconducting states at the sync-resonance node of Absolute Zero, is the explanation for QM harmonic structures in the QM temporal superposition of compounded interference. Ie "That's all" there is.
"Holes" are reflecting by "Elasticity", ie our perceptions are insideout due to the Quantum Operator.
    _____
Why is a "leaky brane" leaky?, because it's a wave function envelope of interleaved modulation in pulse-evolution such that the relatively stable constants such as "the gaps between Primes" and compounded Condensate conglomerations are projected by Planck Dimension e-Pi-i sync-duration multiples in a loose positioning of logarithmic time-timing substantion.
(It probably doesn't help to smash the relationship and hope particultes bonded by unique states of Resonance binding energy can be interpreted precisely or accurately.(?)

Time substantiates space as a stated compound of probability, so symmetry is a secondary distribution after the singularity of primary connection, also there is naturally an odd-even relative sequence of hyper hypo states occurring in definite numerical components of coordinated inclusion-exclusion dimensions and phases. It's the "rolling" progression of the universal timing-wave spiralling out from an implied, origin of timing coordination "nearest" to zero, the function of which is identified by Calculus, differentiation and integration at .dt.
Putting the product before the process makes sense analytically and experimentally, but calculating the probabilistic structure in theory, is hand in hand. Observation of Cosmology and Microscopy together, is to look from the focal plane (of 2D duality) at the "renormalized" micro-macro vanishing point, ..which is the time process as it exists in information conduction generating structure. (Requires teaching a redundancy of approaches to emphasise that the universal quantum phase-state description is existent in a calculus-mathematics framework. Ie the actual existence is emulated by math-physics)
Excellent videos, "best man for the job".
In time space, the infinite/eternal, temporally defined, brane/plane of flat space, ..the dimensional/structural duality, is composed of an infinite spectrum of two states of two objectives in an expanding-contracting, shifting spectrum of potential or observation-connectivity nodal-focus ...in numerical sequences of states, (=>fractal distribution).
The eternity-now statement of potential, or projected plane within the connection/reflection duality shaping, is transverse/orthogonal, "between" the potential macro/micro "stringline" vanishing point of the singularity, eg the even numbers and fractal symetry pivot at some particular time rate node or nodal plane and duration on the now moment, while the odd numbers regress to infinite distance and depth infinitesimally in superposition. It's the landscape image of the Quantum Fields.
Culturally, that may require a Paradigm shift of perception, but practically, ..in the practice of science, it's simply the fundamental property of QM harmonic space-time timing to be integrated with experimental results.
..Lots of work for those who learn by doing, because it's a skilled application of several branches of science, derived by direct experience in practical applications.
    ______
I have no idea how AdS/CFT is interpreted by students in the lectures given by Professor Maldacena, probably the "remembered poetry" type maths at entry level of language studies.
Which is why a "first principles" +/- approach of reduction and reconstruction in intuitive sight and sound association, projected by Thought Experiment is difficult to communicate.
The anecdote about how Bohr was able to say after listening to Einstein talking about his theory, that then believes Mr Einstein understands his theory, but.. and the difficulty of composing those ideas seems to have required the temporal understanding of Bergson to be set aside, which is only possible because maths IS the universal function of Time in/of Actuality.
So posit that Superconductivity is the bipolar timing resonance Interval of the "neutral axis"/now for electrons and phonons in the Conformal Field of hyperhypo holographic projection, interpreted in whatever format, and however the Student thinks of "Spinfoam bubble" pulses, of re-evolving condensed exponential time.
The Biological time-timing shape-shifting mechanisms of RNA DNA are a clear example of the vertical integration of a standing wave and logarithmic conglomerations of self-defined dimensions, "spongy" vortice combinations, as constants.

This commentary is appalling bad language, halfway between the Physics I was taught, and where my developed Intuition was "lost in space" detached from both precise thinking-theory and actual accurate Research. (Sort of typical undergraduate)
So I guess the present Physics Undergraduates are hot on the real-time realization of logarithmicly positioned relative motion regarding Superposition-point Singularity Superconduction, and need no advice other than continue with Principle Observation of WYSIWYG coherence-cohesion objectives.

Some of the analogies the presenter makes doesn't hold..
For example, around @17:30 he says that crystals are systems with broken symmetry and liquids are systems with unbroken symmetry, hence crystals show rigidity (via elastic modulus) and liquids not. But many other systems like rubber etc also shows rigidity without having a crystalline structure, ie, broken symmetry.

i don't quite understand the argument @1:03:43 about electrons moving coherently. Why is there an electron moving exactly backward? If its because of time reversal symmetry not being broken, then shouldn't it also be the case for other solids. This would mean that all crystals are superconducting, since all crystals satisfy time-reversal symmetry.

Great lecture, but I did not understand one detail: At time 1:04:27 Prof Kivelson is explaining that the two paired electrons are moving in the same trajectory but in opposite direction. Can someone explain why the pair electrons should move in reverse direction along the trajectory? If there is a form of attraction due to lattice deformation by the first electron the second one should go in the same direction following the first one.

In phonon mediated superconductivity, two electrons interact through a phonon. That means that we will have an electron with momentum k, another one with momentum k,' and a phonon with momentum q. Momentum conservation implies that after the interaction one electron has momentum k+q and the other one k-q.
One of the important points about BCS theory is that the attractive interaction builds up in a shell around the Fermi surface (whose width is linked to a phonon energy scale, the Debye energy). But let's just focus on the fact that the electrons that keep the attractive interaction are within this shell. You can draw a circle in a piece of paper (that's your Fermi energy), and then some width around it (that's going to be your shell).
Now take two points on the circle. These represent the electron states, with k and k'. Now you need to displace both by the same amount (q) but in different directions. If you pick both positions in the sphere randomly you'll notice that most of the time, if one of the points falls inside the shell, the other one goes out of the shell. This is bad: it means they are no longer in the attractive interaction regime, so no Cooper pair.
Now do the same but pick opposite points in the circle. That represents k = k and k' = -k (that is, opposite direction!). If you repeat the exercise you'll see that most of the times if one stays in the shell, so does the other one. Meaning that after the phonon interaction they can still form a Cooper pair.
So, long story short: having opposite momentum states (i.e. moving in opposite directions) ensures that the interaction between electrons through phonons is attractive.

1:14:51 Superconductivity excludes magnetic fields within the material, HOW CAN YOU HAVE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME?

soo you can provide an alternate hypothesis for EM spectrum lines, hydrogen bonds, and resonance stability that not only allows life to exist but explains the behavior of the carbon atom even better, right? I remember distinctly that the efficacy of QM allowed us to rationalize the spectrum bands observed in various elements, even ions and complexes and radicals. Those things seem to have electrons with different energy needs than you are describing in metals. We need these behaviors to exist, and you have to do better than just metals, or your theory is not useful in a universe that harbors life that is explained so well with other theorists' electrons.
If you don't lose sleep over conservation, why is it so important for black holes? Why doesn't it explain anything about dark matter? Why doesn't it explain the metallic properties of stars? If it's an alternative theory it has a lot of catching up to do, especially without even succeeding in the study for which it was proposed, producing semiconductors.

That B (magnetic flux tubed) tunnels into the mercury inducing super conductivity is of essence. For the fist time Lenny looked like an underdog. Like Sean Hartnoff, duality of Maldecena was not mentioned once.
Electrons, gluons, quarks etc., contribute to the quantum mechanical phenomenon of the BH, yet are not mentioned explicitly.
