Comic books were a little wider during the EC era. By the Marvel Age, they'd narrowed by about a quarter of an inch. Taschens' carrying through with this practice shows REAL attention to detail. Nice!
You’re right! I have heard that about older comics. So, I guess it makes sense that this is a little wider than the Marvel books. Doesn’t surprise me in the least that Taschen would pay attention to such details!
I might look for that online. My family will be relocating in a couple months, so I put off ordering new books. I'm probably going to try to look for that later for my mancave library.
As I recall, the MAD! comic featuring the "Starchie" parody of "Archie" angered the head of MLJ/Archie Comics. (Some people are just so sensitive!) So, as the head of the Comic Book Code Authority that year, he refused to allow the CBC Seal of Approval for "MAD!". Gaines recognized that the rest of the industry would not stand up for him or this last standing comic book title and that he was facing ruin ... unless he escaped their oversight. At this point, he made the decision to turn "MAD!" into an oversized, black-and-white magazine which went on to change American pop culture in ways that the EC line could only dream of earlier. Since comic books had been standardized during WWII to meet rationing requirements while still fulfilling public morale needs and desires, the new format could no longer be considered a children's comic book to be blacklisted by distributors in order to protect children. As a magazine format, there were far more scandalous publications out there, all presumably being bought and consumed by older readers than the presumed comic book readership of children.
Wow! Thats super interesting! I never knew WHY they switched to the magazine format. Just that they did to skirt around the CBC. But, I didn’t know it was Archie playing a hand in it. Thanks for that!!
Since this is the month of Halloween, I thought I'd remind you (in case you forgot) if you'd consider doing a review of Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror Heebie-Jeebie Hullabaloo. I liked the story where Bart turned into a werecat.
If one man could ruin comics then maybe it needed to be sured up a touch. Thankfully I think Bill being high on amphetamines during the hearing helped immensely. I especially liked how the Dell spokeswoman tried to site Blonde, Dennis the Menace and Archie as examples of “good” comics: one about a playboy who refuses to settle on one girl to marry, a literal menace and health professionals will tell you that eating large late night meals are bad for you no matter how much prettier your spouse happens to be than you. Violent images inspire violence.
