Nice playing! Though I have to point out this isn't ragtime, not even close, it's classic jazz, at least the first part. The double time section I guess could pass for ragtime in a way but the hand inversion immediately cancels it back to some sort of combination of jazz because ragtime didn't have hand inversions.
Thank you! I really appreciate your knowledge and expertise on the subject. Perhaps this could be viewed as a modern ragtime style, an adaptation of the old and simple chords. Jonny May likes to use a lot of ragrolls, and the inversions (assuming you meant the LH) are probably used for better voice-leading, personal preference, or easier access when playing at a faster speed. It's very much a signature Jonny arrangement, making use of ragtime, blues, and traditional jazz elements :D
@@Andrei_Borg Yeah I'm a purist in a lot of ways and have developed a good ear for telling what's ragtime and what is jazz and other genres ;) The main defining feature of ragtime is a very organized and almost mechanical structure that is based on the _syncopation_ NOT a melody whereas jazz is based more on a _melody_ and NOT the syncopation making it easier to sing along to. The voice leading in the left hand is a defining feature of jazz and novelty piano which came about 2 decades later when ragtime started to die out. Johnny, as you pointed out, mixes at least 5 different genres of music into his arrangements so calling the tune a jazz arrangement is generally more accurate than calling it ragtime since jazz can include ragtime phrasing but ragtime, being a precursor doesn't have any elements of jazz. Oh and the hand inversion I referred to is the term I use for when you play the melody with the right hand crossing over the left to play in the bass while the left hand plays chords in the tenor. It's one of the more common jazz tricks from the late 1920s. Gershwin famously made an arrangement where he played the melody of one of his songs in the bass with his LEFT hand and played chords with the right (necessitating incredible hand independence, not the case with what Johnny wrote in to this arrangement where the right hand simply crosses over).
@@Andrei_Borg Thanks for your reply Andrei, I also play professionally the piano. For practice I have a Yamaha Acoustic upright, a Motif XF8 and also a Yamaha EX5 synth. Keep the good work Buddy !
@@rudymahdeo8823 Yeah, that's a really nice setup! One day I'll get myself a Yamaha grand, but for now this is more than enough for me. Thanks for the kind words! 😄
Hi! No, I don't teach piano but maybe I'll consider making some tutorials in the future. Check out Jonny May, he has great educational content on UA-cam and his website!
Whoa!! So good Andrei!! You NAILED it 🔥
You know you made it, if you can play Jonny's bare neccesities without anyone noticing if you or Jonny is playing! Amazing!
I am so proud of you who is playing the piano
