I personally don’t buy dupes and never have, but the more I see luxury brands copying each others designs and the more I hear about luxury brands not paying/caring for their workers, the less I care about the brands as such. If they make bags for 50-60 euros and sell them for 5000-6000, that should be profit enough for their designs. I also do believe that most dupe buyers would not consider getting the real thing, so I don’t think the brand is missing out on those customers anyway. I guess I’m just done defending the big horses at this point. They have so many billions that they can defend themselves.

There are a lot of people who don’t follow luxury brands and purchase a lesser priced version elsewhere with no idea it’s a “dupe”. They just liked the style so they bought it.
I also wonder if too much credit is being given to the luxury brands that purses are their “original” style. There are examples of luxury brands copying lesser known brands designs but no one discusses that.
I also wonder what about luxury brands who copy each other’s products? Are those dupes and only the original house’s product should be purchased? 🧐

Excellent point. Check out the issue with Hermes copying a Sketchers sneaker. Hermes is still able to sell it, but the details of lawsuit are sealed. My guess is that Hermes is paying a percentage to Sketchers. So, I guess Hermes has resorted to copying designs. Also, none of the designer bags styles are copyrighted. Only the name. Everything is fair game these days.

I have the dupe mini Kelly and a real mini Kelly! I honestly don’t care! It’s not like the luxury brands are not copying each other to start with. I’m all about people buying what they want and anyway, if I speak about the dupe mini Kelly, it’s still easy to tell it’s not a Hermès bag. Plus, I honestly think I’m totally crazy to pay the price of designer items. 😂 Yes I said what I said, we pay way too much just for the name, and with all the scandals going around, I won’t defend these houses. I did in the past, but now, absolutely not! Most of the time, people that buy the dupes cannot afford or will never pay for designers. I will never judge and I will probably get an other dupe of something.

I’m torn. I bought a beautiful Loewe Puzzle bag which cost me $5000 CAD and I love it. However, if for example a young woman (or older) doesn’t have the financial means to buy a Puzzle bag at that price, but loved the design and considered it her dream bag, I would never hold it against her for wanting to buy a dupe so that she could feel special, on trend and stylish too. Not being able to afford a luxury designer handbag certainly doesn’t diminish one’s desire to want it. Now buying a counterfeit bag is a whole different ball game. Passing off a fake bag as authentic and screwing over an unsuspecting person who has worked hard to save for that bag, is despicable. Just my two cents ☺️

I would rather buy pre-loved or not at all if something costs more than I’m willing to pay. I agree with you that these companies are profiting off of someone else’s designs.

Hey Jess! I do not have a problem with dupes. Frankly there are not many unique designs anyway as all these lux brands just copy each other. So is the new Prada tote a dupe of The Row Margaux. Based on your definition it is. In fact several of the lux houses now have a similar bag. So you would be out with those even though they are bonafide designer bags. Based on your logic most of the designer bags out here are dupes of other bags. There are not many unique bags out there….they all have vanity bags, tote style bags, bucket bags…and variations of the same bags circulating all over the place for the most part. So why can’t a manufacturer just make the same style bag and slap their name on it for less money. It is clear to me that with the exception of Hermes and a few smaller brands that most of our so called lux bags are being made by sub contractors in various parts of the world and guess what…they generally source their leathers from the same places so no I do not believe the Chanel, LV , Gucci, Dior, Celine,…etc use better leather than a Mulberry, Coach or Marc Jacobs bag.( And I have bags from all of these brands) I simply do not buy the exclusivity crap especially since these bags are only costing between 60-400 $ at most to make. We are paying for the logo/brand and that does translate to the best quality. We have been bambozzled as of late and as consumers we need to get wise. But I get it…it is a hard habit to break but I am getting there step by step.

  • @BrighterThanYours

Nope it’s waking people up. People want to feel like spending 10k on four straps of leather and some hardware makes sense so when you see something that looks exactly the same or identical for $100 it stirs an uneasy feeling. It’s a normal reaction though. Buying these expensive bags feels like entry ticket into a lifestyle and a dream of luxurious magnitude so people feel cheated when they see that same bag although not exact but pretty damn close on someone else.

In light of designers that have been accused of stealing designs from other smaller brands/designers and not giving credit. I personally don’t want to use the argument of “profiting off another designer’s designs” as a reason not to purchase a dupe. However, I understand why people have that view. At one point, I felt that way but have seen more evidence over the years where these larger brands have done just that. I feel most of the time it is used in favor of a more “pricey” or “prestigious “ brand’s favor. Not that people are doing it on purpose but that’s the most common examples I see.

I don’t think it’s hurting the luxury brands. I also don’t care if they are “ripping off” the original design. Some of my wealthiest friends and myself who own real Hermes, Chanel, etc… we’ve all started getting into high end replicas. They still cost hundreds to thousands depending on what you get, and ours are hand made by a woman who was a craftsman at Hermes. At this point I’m finding it hard to support the big luxury brands knowing how they operate. And watching Tanner Leatherstein, we know even a Birkin costs only about 900-1200$ to make. I feel kinda like a fool for spending $8500 (15 yrs ago) for my Birkin, $5000 on a preloved Kelly, $3000 on my Evelyne. I still love Hermes but I can’t justify the price. As far as dupes I feel like they usually aren’t as good quality as a rep, I guess that’s why dupes are usually a much lower price point.

Hi Jess! This to me is a matter of which came first? The chicken or the egg? I feel that the big designer brands all copy one another to some extent. As far as bags and straps go, all of them copied equestrian leather designs. And the whole thing evolved from that. Carrier bags, messenger bags, feed bags, saddle bags, etc. Horse bit details...all of it. Louis, Hermes, and a good chunk of of the luxury and contemporary brands have some version of Alma, Speedy, tofu crossbody bags, etc. They can copyright exclusive design details. But they cannot copyright silhouette or shape. Chanel did not invent the rectangle or argyle pattern. So everyone is going to make some version of everything that is made. Miranda explained how this works in The Devil Wears Prada. So I don't buy the whole intellectual property argument completely.
That said, I don't mind a dupe. I really like that Lily & Bean dupe of the Mini Kelly. Counterfeit is one thing, but a dupe can be nice if the leathers are good. Of course it won't be the TOP leathers like Hermes. But for most people that is probably ok if they know what they are buying. ❤

I actually own the dupe version of the puzzle bag you showed in this video, and I also used to own an authentic Loewe bag as well. I sold the authentic version because I couldn’t stomach the thought of having so much money tied up in a bag. I could’ve bought a whole cow (or a couple) for the price of that one leather bag if I wanted to. There are differences between the dupe and authentic puzzle bags, but I wouldn’t say that that difference is so huge the price difference between the one with a logo and one without should be thousands of dollars. I respect everyone’s reasons for buying luxury and buying dupes as I myself have bought both as well. I have no issue saying my bag is a dupe if someone compliments it, and i live in a place where luxury is very rare to see, so most people don’t know what it is anyway. I bought the dupe because I loved how it looks, just as I loved how the authentic versions looks. I just love the cheaper price tag more than the logo. Thanks for the video Jess, I love to watch

Versace, Dior, Prada, Coach and such that don't hold value in the resale market, but at least those brand don't hold value still can sell for 30 percent of retail price, I get some money bag over no money bag from dupe/counterfeit bags.

For the dupes vs. original design, I find that with things like very basic design (the Marc Jacobs tote bag for example), the line becomes so thin. Because I have seen coach bags that look extremely similar. Similarly, the Dior book tote style is available from a bunch of brands and they are available from other luxury houses (so not even cheaper), so I don't feel all that miffed about dupes copying design from fashion houses (because they seem to be copying each other anyway).

I don't buy dupes that are so close to a designer handbag that, from a distance, it looks like the real thing. However, there are so many bags that are "inspired by", but aren't trying to copy the designer bag, that appeal to me. All my bags are in my collection because I love them, and one in particular is there despite it's recognisability and not because of it!
Atm I'm looking at buying the Blossum by Pourchet, what appeals to me is the strap detail and its slouchy nature. I feel it has Sac de Jour vibes, but much more my style due to the slouch. As far as the strap detailing goes, we all know about the Kelly and Birkin (way to structured for me), but they're not the only ones to have bags like this: YSL has the Manhatten, Mulberry has their Bayswater range, even the Ferragamo Hug to name a few.
And again, thinking of the Kelly, the trapeze shape was a standard bag shape back in the day...
As far as buying a dupe (or a fake), because I cant afford the real thing - I'd say its better to go for a mid priced good quality bag, that is original. The quality can be up there with a lot of the big names but they're under the radar, other bag lovers will be thinking "that bag is interesting, I don't recognise it, I wonder where it's from?" Of course this doesn't work if you want your bag to be noticed because of the brand.

I bought it because I really liked the style but I’ll only use it occasionally and I don’t have to worry about dropping it or getting food or drink on it, as I would a $3,000 bag. I simply didn’t want to spend that much on a bag I won’t use often. Spent the remainder on a week long trip to the Sunshine Coast and a few good restaurants. If the bag is a really basic design or won’t get much use, I am all for a dupe.

I don’t mind buying inspired bags or dupes as they are commonly referred to now because honestly, I will never ever be able to afford an Hermes Birkin so if I come across a bag that mimics the style I’m going to go ahead and purchase it because at the end of the day, these are just things and it’s not real life so it’s fine. If you prefer to pay the $20,000 for the real deal, then you do you and don’t worry about what other people are doing. Having said this, as a person who has lost several family members in the past five years, including my father, I’ve learned not to sweat. The small stuff and bags are the small stuff, and I will also say that as a resident of NYC, you literally can be standing on a subway platform next to someone with an actual real bag and somebody has a fake bag and I promise you no one will be able to tell the difference. I assure you, nobody actually cares. After all these luxury house scandals we’ve been hearing about the poor treatment of their employees, how anyone can justify giving them that much money to make them even bigger and richer is beyond me. I for one I’m done. In reference to the Picotin, sorry, but Hermes did not come up with the design for the bucket bag so quality of leather aside that’s not a design that they have particularly come up with on their own. I just cannot imagine paying $6000 or whatever it is to buy that little bag that is literally mimicking a bag that was used to feed horses with. People are just completely losing, their perspective these days.

With the quality of Chanel dropping rapidly, and Hermes being unreachable for everyone but the 1%, I will be buying a dupe of a designer bag I like if I find it. The dupes are better quality than the designer bags! I own vintage Chanel and Prada, and Vuitton bags from my days in retail. I would never spend another cent on Chanel bag or Dior bag knowing what I know about how they are made. It's a very good probability that we all have purchased something that unbeknownst to us that was made in a sweatshop, but to drop a couple thousand dollars on a bag that costs $57.00 to make infuriates me. Chanel and Dior have been busted and I'm sure there are more designers who will make the list. The luxury experience is ruined for me. If I have to buy a dupe, then so be it.

Have you ever seen a vintage Mulberry Kelly? It looks very much like Hermes and it's a vintage design. Dupes are definitely not a new thing! But I never realized luxury brands duped each other.

I don't like fakes. Dupes are a grey area but I'm not a fan, either. I buy real leather bags- and sometimes "fun" bags that I don't expect to last more than a few years- from a guy who has a shop right next to my optician's office. No logos but not "Quiet Luxury." either. I think, no matter how well the fake or dupe is made, it just gives it away that you either can't afford the real thing or you're trying to look like you can but the dupe gives it away. That's just my opinion. If I wanted a designer bag I'd buy one pre-loved. My budget can sometimes part with a few hundred dollars for a nice bag that will last me for years- but not thousands. I'm realistic about my budget (not saying others aren't, even if buying luxury) I don't really care if a bag has a logo (of that brand, not a stolen one). I am sometimes mesmerised by the full to the brim designer bag shelves I see here on YT, but I know I can't afford these types of bags, so I just buy bags I like and that match my personal style. I feel that dupes are just bought "until I can afford the real one" or because the person knows they can never afford a bag that costs into the thousands of dollars and never will. I say buy the nicest bag you can afford (by nice I mean made with real materials and is in within your price range). If you can only afford one nice bag, make sure to get one that's versatile so you can wear it with a range of outfits.

I don't have any issue with a dupe, a quilted bag is just that, or pouch

I wish dupes were not so exactly like the real brands. Yes there are a few differences but honestly they are so small they are almost fakes. I like that I can get a similar style to try out but I just don’t need them to be exactly the same

I’ve previous purchased a couple of dupes to trial run if the bags capacity and dimensions work for me. In each case, I’ve got “value”, as confirmed I couldn’t live with the original bag as it was just too big, too small, not accessible enough etc. I guess if luxury bag hire was more of a thing in my city (Melbourne, Australia), I could test out a real bag that way. 😊

I agree! If I am going to be paying a lot of money on a bag, I would rather buy the original!
Although…lol… I do buy makeup dupes sometimes.
I wonder how soon luxury brands will start suing the creators of dupes.
In the makeup world, I just learned Benefits Cosmetics is suing E.L.F. for their Roller Lash mascara dupe. It’s interesting that they are suing E.L.F. when a few other brands have duped Benefits’ mascara. I think it’s because E.L.F’s mascara is really successful.
Target ( a large store in the U.S. has apparently been duping a few Dior “Dioriviera” totes! I have seen people on Reddit showing their purchases. I wonder if Dior a) even knows lol b) would sic their lawyers on Target with a cease and desist.
The Bottega dupe is laughable at best!

I used to have the same opinion as you on dupes - save up for the real thing or buy a more affordable bag that has its own design. But I don't have that amount of respect for luxury brands anymore. I will avoid dupes for the most part because it kinda looks goofy imo, but I do have a semi-dupe of that one square Miu Miu bag that's popular right now. It's not a 1-to-1 dupe like the ones you showed and has design elements that make it obviously different, but it's got the same bag and handle shape, and same color. I just liked the style (which is a fairly simple design, actually pretty similar to the Plume), but didn't want to pay Miu Miu prices. Like I said, I don't have that much respect for the luxury brands these days.

I hate fake bags with the logo that are trying to pretend they are real and find them so tacky . But dupes or inspired bags is totally up to people who wear them . Even designers copy each other . So no harm. 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

If someone rich or good-looking wears a high-quality fake, the bag automatically becomes legit. While a person who looks poor but is actually rich and can afford to wear formal clothes, it automatically becomes fake. It's all about perception. Recommending D U P B A G Y their bags make it impossible to tell the real from the fake

  • @PlugInKali

No, they aren't ruining it. The demographic of people who will buy a dupe, is not the same target demographic of these luxury houses. Just because a low middle income housewife buys a dupe, doesn't mean that if the dupe didn't exist she would buy the original. Likewise, an upper east socialite who loves fashion will not buy a dupe. TLDR: the dupe market is not taking anything away from the luxury market to the point of ruining it. If anything, luxury houses are ruining themselves, by offering products with subpar quality at astronomical prices, leading people to mid-price brands that offer much better craftsmanship, with similar designs (not dupes) at reasonable prices or to the second-hand market.

I buy dupes to see if I want to spend the money on the real thing. I am waiting for my puzzle bag dupe. I hear a lot of people find it hard to get into. So I want to ry out a dupe before I invest. The dupes smell funny

I am totally against fakes and there are no arguments that will ever change my mind. On the dupes, I do believe these also harm the luxury brands. I would never buy a Bottega Veneta bag only because there are millions of dupes. Often they are poorly made too. Whenever I pass by a fast fashion store I see a dupe or highly inspired bags on display. Where is the line between an inspiration and a pure dupe that ruins the appeal of the original style? I also find it ridiculous how many contemporary brands get significantly inspired when designing their higher price tag products. Last but not least, I feel like most people wearing a dupe don’t even realize they do so, because they simply don’t know (or don’t care about) luxury brands collections.
