i agree with you, met him twice in new york also, super guy, ez to talk to, & we worked out @ the same gym a couple of times. the olympia didn't have a "best poser" award, but if it had, Chris would have won it several times.
Oscar Montes I have them, and no. Every coach Ive had has called me out for having fucked up elbows. It sycks when an all American wrestler makes fun of you for your fucked elbows
I met a lot of these old school bodybuilders back in the early eighties as they came to my town and did posing exhibitions and training seminars. Lee Haney, Boyer Coe, Dennis Tinerino, Frank Zane, Chris Dickerson and several others. I met Chris a week after his Olympia win and he was VERY impressive. What people don't understand is that pictures and videos cannot do these physiques justice---you really have to see these bodybuilders up close in person to appreciate what they look like. When Chris did his poses I was maybe 10 feet away and his muscles popped out in 3D in a way that no video or pic could ever capture. And if anyone doubts just how good Chris Dickerson really was just check out his list of accomplishments below as it is VERY impressive and proves that a wide variety of judges over a 4 decade period also thought that he was one of the very best.... 1966 Mr North America - AAU, 2nd 1966 Mr New York State - AAU, Overall Winner 1966 Mr Eastern America - AAU, Overall Winner 1966 Mr Atlantic Coast - AAU, Overall Winner 1966 Junior Mr USA - AAU, Most Muscular, 1st 1966 Junior Mr USA - AAU, Winner 1967 Mr California - AAU, Winner 1967 Mr America - AAU, Most Muscular, 4th 1967 Mr America - AAU, 6th 1967 Junior Mr America - AAU, Most Muscular, 5th 1967 Junior Mr America - AAU, 4th 1968 Mr USA - AAU, Most Muscular, 2nd 1968 Mr USA - AAU, Winner 1968 Mr America - AAU, Most Muscular, 3rd 1968 Mr America - AAU, 3rd 1968 Junior Mr America - AAU, 3rd 1969 Mr America - AAU, 2nd 1969 Junior Mr America - AAU, 2nd 1970 Universe - NABBA, Short, 1st 1970 Mr America - AAU, Most Muscular, 1st 1970 Mr America - AAU, Winner 1970 Junior Mr America - AAU, Most Muscular, 1st 1970 Junior Mr America - AAU, Winner 1971 Universe - NABBA, Short, 1st 1973 Universe - NABBA, Short, 1st 1973 Universe - NABBA, Overall Winner 1973 Pro Mr America - WBBG, Winner 1974 Universe - Pro - NABBA, Short, 1st 1974 Universe - Pro - NABBA, Overall Winner 1975 World Championships - WBBG, 2nd 1975 Universe - Pro - PBBA, 2nd 1976 Universe - Pro - NABBA, Short, 2nd 1976 Universe - Pro - NABBA, 3rd 1976 Olympus - WBBG, 4th 1979 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, Lightweight, 4th 1979 Grand Prix Vancouver - IFBB, 2nd 1979 Canada Pro Cup - IFBB, Winner 1979 Canada Diamond Pro Cup - IFBB, 2nd 1980 Pittsburgh Pro Invitational - IFBB, 2nd 1980 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, 2nd 1980 Night of Champions - IFBB, Winner 1980 Grand Prix New York - IFBB, Winner 1980 Grand Prix Miami - IFBB, Winner 1980 Grand Prix Louisiana - IFBB, 2nd 1980 Grand Prix California - IFBB, Winner 1980 Florida Pro Invitational - IFBB, Winner 1980 Canada Pro Cup - IFBB, Winner 1981 Professional World Cup - IFBB, 2nd 1981 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, 2nd 1981 Night of Champions - IFBB, Winner 1981 Grand Prix World Cup - IFBB, 2nd 1981 Grand Prix Washington - IFBB, Winner 1981 Grand Prix New York - IFBB, Winner 1981 Grand Prix New England - IFBB, 2nd 1981 Grand Prix Louisiana - IFBB, Winner 1981 Grand Prix California - IFBB, Winner 1982 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, Winner 1984 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, 11th 1990 Arnold Classic - IFBB, 8th 1994 Olympia - Masters 50+ - IFBB, 1st[4]
I met Chris Dickerson in 1985 at a gym in Virginia Beach where I worked out when I was in college. He's only about 5'6", but the first thing I noticed was his huge calves. Huge, chiseled calves, really impressive. The gym was owned by Lynn Conkwright who was a friend of his and had won the mixed pairs competition with her. He was helping her get ready for the '85 Ms. Olympia. Seemed like a nice guy. Lynn was a sweetheart.
They give him the 82 Olympia for a simple reason; It's because contrary to somebody else, he don't say nothing about the controversial 80 and 81 Olympia. Plus, he don't boycott the 81 Olympia contrary to Zane and Coe who did. So they simply take that in consideration and want to "thank" him for the way he act. Chris has a good physique but not in 82; he has a torn pec, a torn biceps and deformed elbows!
How he presented his physique on stage went a long way; his presentation made his physique appear better than it actually was. At any rate, he won a Mr. Olympia title, and there are many incredible bodybuilders who have never accomplished that feat.
His posing in the finals reminded me of a theatrical production...I saw it on wide world of sports...His muscles flowed gracefully with the music, and I think thats what got him the trophy. ..
At only 19 years old, Casey Viator was the youngest Mr. America in the history of the sport. During '79 Chris Dickerson and Viator looked INCREDIBLE as they battled it out in the Grand Prix title series.
I agree with a lot of what you said Nick but 3 years later Albert Beckles came in second to Lee Haney so despite Beckles age he still wasn't finished he would even improve at 55 years old.
His posing routine was fantastic. All side and back shots looked fantastic when watching it in real time. Legs from top to bottom are complete.. I thought he earned it. Josef and Beckles also looked great. He should have the previous Mr. Olympia for sure.
That's amazing. Yea, I didn't realize how good Frank Zane looked at this Olympia. He looked great and as full as I've seen him, but he also maintained amazing conditioning as he's well-known for.
Man I really appreciate your videos. It's nice to see somebody that isn't gimmicky or trying to just push a brand. You talk about interesting material & articulate yourself well. Keep doing you bro
Dickerson's strengths were his calves and back, AND his posing. He really knew how to present his physique in the best light possible. He also had a torn right pec and torn left biceps, but those injuries didn't seem to hold him back too badly.
I just watched the whole 82 Olympia on youtube and it gave me goosebumps, my god those guys could pose ! and Tom Platz came on grinning with the biggest jaw muscles in history lol
I dispute what you say, Albert Beckless was a fine bodybuilder despite his age and scored a second place in the Olympia to lee Haney in 1985 a few years later so I don't think it reflects on the line up of this year. Chris Dickerson won largely because of his presentation.
2018' Mr. Olympia Shawn Rhoden has now taken the honor of being the oldest Olympia winner at 43 years & 5 months of age. Chris Dickerson was 43 years,1 month!!
and I agree with you Nick, that Chris Dickerson was a weak Mr. Olympia with a VERY strange body style. (not very pleasing to look at) especially next to guys like Arnold and Zane. The are politics involved as Danny Padilla is the proof of, LOL... and that is SAD.
I saw Dickerson back in the early 80's and his physique was very impressive. The pictures don't do him justice. He was always conditioned and he had good separation in his legs and abs. It was the nascent debate of the leanness/cuts vs. size debate that still dominates the sport today. Many people thought "Brutal" Bertil Fox should have won because he was the biggest and thickest competitor on stage. I think Viator should have won in '82 but Dickerson's victory was not unreasonable. As for Albert Beckles, don't put the man down because of his age. He went on to win Night of Champions in '85 and his body then would still be competitive with younger guys in Classic Physique today. He is still alive today at 88 yrs of age which is a testament that bodybuilding is a sport for all ages provided that you workout smart, eat right, and limit (if not say off) drug use.
I'd love to see an episode on bob paris, if you haven't already done one. in my opinion he was a great combination of aesthetics and size. he was pretty like Zane but with significantly more mass. Paris was one of those guys that you aspired to try and look like.
Obviously those of you who have made negative comments about Chris Dickerson's physique never had a chance to see him on stage. He was incredibly impressive from every angle. Always in top condition had one of the greatest posing routines ever. A total pro in every respect. Also some of the best calves ever in bodybuilding.
I agree w/ you Jeffrey. If anything I think Dickerson was *under*rated. Besides, elbows are not a bodypart. True he did have the pec tear, but his back density and thickness were great(especially from the back)..esp. his rear dels. His incredible calves were complimented by very aesthetic and well proportioned thighs. Re: Viator..he was great in some poses but a blocky waist, wide hips and flat pecs detracted from the overall view. In 82--I had Samir winning. I had Dickerson edging out Arnold in 81 and taking it again 81 (but would have been fine w/ Platz winning in 81 too)
Yeah, I think Nick should have mentioned his calves. Even Arnold mentions them specifically in his encyclopedia, as an example of awesome calf genetics.
Jeffrey Romualdi Some people just don’t look as good in photos as in real life. I saw frank zane in person and he looks twice as large in real life as in photos.
Every comparison and video footage I have seen, Dickerson looks lucky to be in the top 5. Odd small arms, the elbow thing, torn pec, odd midsection, pinched clavicles and underwhelming size even for those days! All adds up to a mess for mine. No amount of smooth classical posing (which he was known for) or reasonable conditioning covers those faults.
i would have given that one to Casey, His double bi was just incredible . List of notable non-winners who should have won an Olympia: - Mike Mentzer. Kevin Levrone. Bertil Fox. Nasser el Sonbaty.
Hi Nick! I have been watching your videos for a while now and must congratulate you on graduating university and putting out all these awesome videos. I am 20 right right now finishing my pre-med studies and I have had a similar experience to yours. Talk to your cardiologist and inquiry about SVT (supra-ventricular tachycardia). It happens out out of the blue I started having irregular palpitations a few years back and had a few episode where my heart was racing around 180bpm and beating really hard. like you I almost never use pre-workout or drink caffeinated drinks. The main cause for me is stress related and not getting enough rest for a prolonged period of time. It usually occurs when I have had a few sleep deprived days in a row and am not recovering properly.
Dickerson had consistent high placings in competitions so even though he looked not so good here, he had a decent physique. His legs are second to none and Arnold also had a four pack.
Well, I think most people would argue that Tom Platz aka “The Quadfather”, who was also on stage that year, had legs that were unrivaled, but his bicep tear brought him down that year, so I can see why Dickerson would place higher than him.
Chris Dickerson was unimpressive although he had a pair of the best calves in the history of bodybuilding. Franco Columbo was also an unimpressive and undeserving Olympia. But both of them are way better than the HGH gut sporting Olympias from Ronnie onwards . If you can't create a vacuum during an overhead pose then you don't deserve to compete.
Chris Dickerson was known for his calf development, Nick. He wasn't a big man and didn't look that impressive against bigger bodybuilders. He was also known for his aesthetics and his posing routine which highlighted his physique. I actually met Chris Dickerson after he had won the Mr. America Contest at another bodybuilding contest in the 1970's and he was a down to earth nice guy. But I agree with you that there were others in the 1982 Olympia like Casey Vietor and Frank Zane who were more muscular and impressive looking than Chris Dickerson.
I actually got to meet him and shake his hand once when he was making appearances promoting Oshman's Sporting Goods stores back around 1980/81. He talked to a group of us for about 30 minutes and stayed covered-up the entire time. Someone asked him if he was going to show his physique and he said "No, it's not in my contract."
On the positive, excellent poser, great calves, and a very good back. Terrible arms even at a local show level. Poor pec shape, (They looked like they were sagging), his delts were not full. I agree that ZANE and Viator, were far better.
I think you had to see Chris in person. He was very impressive in person and won every bodybuilding contest in the world. Also keep in mind that he probably should have won the 1980, 1981, as well as the 1982 Mr. Olympia that he won. He could easily have won three titles.
In addition to not being impressively large, he wasn't particularly aesthetic either. He had oddly shaped pecs, a fairly thick waist, and as Nick said, no lower ab definition. If I had to pick from this lineup, I'd probably go Viator/Zane for 1st and 2nd.
I dont get how you have the the guys like Bannout and Zane, Viator and this guy wins ???? Its hard to believe. The gay stuff must hold some weight. He probably had a lot of dirt on Weider.
Great researching! I remember seeing articles about him, & wondered what had happened to him, as he seemed to have dropped off the face of the Earth. Thanks, Nick!
He used to workout/training in NYC at Steel Gym back in the early 2000's. I used to see him all the time. Never said anything to him, but he seemed super chill
Maybe it was all the years of hard work. He'd been around a long time, and was dedicated. It was felt that he deserved the title. It happens all the time in sports. It's not unheard of.
I remember reading about this several years ago and it was alluded to that he was awarded the Mr Olympia crown because he had been competing so long and had never won it. I think he was also said to be retiring after this Mr O so that factored in as well.
Small correction...as I understand it, Schwarzenegger did not start filming "Conan" until January of 1981, after the 1980 Mr. Olympia. He entered the 1980 contest, he says, when during his training leading up to the film, he realized he was in shape to compete again.
I always thought the judges gave it to Dickerson because he announced his retirement shortly before this Olympia. I think Viator had the best physique here. It was also surprising that Bertil Fox came in 8th. The IFFBB judges were not kind to Fox ever. I agree Dickerson had the least impressive physique of all the Mr. Olympias.
good video. i recently saw a couple of your videos with you in them. i was surprised how young you are. you have a mature deep voice. before I saw you i thought you were in your 50'S or 60's.
LOL! I've got those same elbows, I've NEVER used steroids, and I look like Cråp !!! Thanks for your Vids. I enjoy your informative commentary. Pressing "Like" for sure.
wow look at that shot with Dickerson and viator side by side. he's arms, shoulders and over all physic dwarf Dickerson's. unbelievble. just better separation and everything.
Can you go into more detail about how judges rate these body builders at these competitions ? Possibly compare a few peoples, chests, back and give us your opinion on which one is better and why.. To me, I could not tell who has the most impressive physique.. They all looked jacked to me.
That last picture with Ben Weider looked good for the era. You're right. His condition pulled it off. I remember the 1982 Muscle & Fitness issue with Dickerson dressed like a viking with horns on his head and a sword. Or something along those lines. It's been a long time. Where was Boyer Coe? He could have placed. Didn't Danny Padilla look pretty decent? I think he was on the left next to Dickerson in the first picture. Good video...
Chris had amazing thighs and calves, though. I agree that his upper body wasn't as aesthetic as Zane's. And, certainly, a case could be made for Viator in this Mr. Olympia. But the worst Mr. Olympia, bar none, was Franco Columbu, and I don't care what year you want to argue. Columbu was terrible in '81. His best showing was arguably '75 but his leg development was always sub-par and he was bow-legged.
I met him twice in New York and he is one of the nicest people I've ever met. He also sings opera.
Quite the musician. He also played the skin flute and prickollo.
yes he is
i agree with you, met him twice in new york also, super guy, ez to talk to, & we worked out @ the same gym a couple of times. the olympia didn't have a "best poser" award, but if it had, Chris would have won it several times.
Man wish I had pointy elbows.Great weapon to have in your arsenal.

Oscar Montes I have them, and no. Every coach Ive had has called me out for having fucked up elbows. It sycks when an all American wrestler makes fun of you for your fucked elbows
Also the fact that he is gay affected his Glutes
They had great separation
This made me laugh so hard, I don't need hitting abs again before the summer of 2019.
Savage 😂
Lmao. Wasn’t expecting that
Lucky for him he is black already because nobody dares to oil him up backstage.
Nice...
elbow calcification gains
those elbows could have been the result of early hgh use back in those days it wasn't synthetic like today.
ED L nick literally explained why his elbows were so pointy, stop making bullshit assumptions and look up what bursitis is
synthetic vs real has nothing to do with elbow calcification. It is just repetitions. nobody used hg back then anyway.
Look up the side effects to HGH use and stop acting like you know shit.
well, I have the same thing on my elbows, never did hg, but lifted my entire life... you obviously have never lifted in your life, so....

just imagine if Chris Dickerson did Muay Thai. Elbows like sledgehammers...
At least he wasn't like a pregnant bodybuilders compare to now........
Gogan Saggu yes, best legs and back in the show. Chiseled and fantastic poser.
Gogan Saggu but that oil bruh
Gogan Saggu, very true! I'll give them all that!
Myles Millner Plattz legs were way better
You giys sound so cringey....i bet u guys dont even know a bit of bodybuilding
honestly the best fitness channel on here, consistent uploads and very informative
Yeah. I don't care anything about bodybuilding but I watch his vids
same know nothing but watch these videos hahah learning somethings tho ;)
Yep, and they are short but to the point.
He knows his stuff-i watch RX muscle as well.but this channel is much better.use to watch Lui marco which was dogshit

Stupid comment.
So Chris Dickerson's victory in '82 was "political", more or less? Interesting.
Well I like Chris and he’s an all time great but I’d say Tom Platz was just on another level
@@rickbrenner6079 He looked WAY better 2 years before in the 1980 Mr. OLympia, when he won in 1982 he looked terrible!!
Arnold also had a four pack. Thats why he did a lot of side shots
Muhammad Tracy Ali and why he did a vacuum when he did his front double bicep poses.
Cameron Jeffery yep
What won the Olympia for him was his Double Front Elbow pose. Absolutely no competition.

Casey Viators physique looks insane to be honest.
Bannout should have won that easily, wtf were the judges thinking? for me he looks far better than anyone at that olympia..
Bannout is IMHO the most comic-book-superhero-esque bodybuilder to ever grace the stage. One of my favs.
I have to agree Dickerson really didn't deserve the win . Casey Viator, who placed third, really should have won the Olympia that year
I just watched the whole 82 Olympia on youtube and it gave me goosebumps, my god those guys could pose ! and Tom Platz came on grinning with the biggest jaw muscles in history lol

Odd small arms, the elbow thing, torn pec, odd midsection, pinched clavicles and underwhelming size even for those days! All adds up to a mess for mine. No amount of smooth classical posing (which he was known for) or reasonable conditioning covers those faults.
Being 52 on the Olympia stage also says a lot about Albert Beckles! He looked great!
i would have given that one to Casey, His double bi was just incredible . List of notable non-winners who should have won an Olympia: - Mike Mentzer. Kevin Levrone. Bertil Fox. Nasser el Sonbaty.
I enjoy listening to this channel because it's slightly more analytical and he is well spoken. Props
I say viator should have won
Viator was a very amateurish poser and he could never show his physique to it's full effect
ArseneWenger he always looked like shit
Well, I think most people would argue that Tom Platz aka “The Quadfather”, who was also on stage that year, had legs that were unrivaled, but his bicep tear brought him down that year, so I can see why Dickerson would place higher than him.
@@tijanajakovljevic6319 youd know
@@emceedamc platz won for me in 81
That 1982 photo brings back a lot of memories!
The only thing on point about this guy was his elbow
Solid elbow gains! Elbows got that Phil Heath 3D effect.
1981 was bad too, Franco basically had one leg, almost zero thigh definition and a big gyno on one nipple...
Great and honest video Nick!Well researched as always.
Keep it up dude
Agree, also, did he have a left bicep injury? Looks smaller
This guy won an Olympia but Kevin Levrone never did. Wow.
Dude there are youtubers who are dying of making 3 videos a week and here u are making 3 a day mad respect bro!!!👍👌
The least impressive physique and most controversial winner was Franco Columbu in 1981. Columbu had no legs and gyno. A disgraceful result.
Nah, Colombu is not the first guy to walk on stage with a hint of gyno. I agree his legs were sub par, but his upper body was still awesome.
crazee635 but upper body wise he was a beast. Judges didnt want to mark down his legs because the fridge run injury, but they should have
A hint of gyno? He could have breastfed twin babies.
Danny Padilla shoulda won he looked aesthetic as fuckkkk
tatskamies Danny always seemed to be overlooked. I agree with you.
Albert Beckles was looking great that year at age 52.
He could easily have won three titles.
just wait till brad castleberry competes😤😤
most informative channel on Body building history. very professional work Nick
Danny Padilla didn't look bad...
I admit I don't know much about this, but according to Arnie's Encyclopaedia, stage presence and focus can affect your placing quite a bit.
Mohamed Makkawy looked the way you'd want to look.
Loving the consistency bro, keep it up!
Disagree....least impressive Olympia was when Arnold "won" in 1980, and Franco in 1981.
He used to workout/training in NYC at Steel Gym back in the early 2000's. I used to see him all the time. Never said anything to him, but he seemed super chill
how come all these old school bbers are rarely bald? most now are all bald even though they both use roids?
Machucando bbers today abuses steroids so much that they are like pregnant women.
Maybe it was all the years of hard work. He'd been around a long time, and was dedicated. It was felt that he deserved the title. It happens all the time in sports. It's not unheard of.
samir bannout should have won
telemudna he looked better in 83
Ice J ik,but still his 82 version is best at that line up
and yea ,samir's 83 version is one of the best u212 phisiques ever- top 2, with shawn ray
telemudna viator had the best, although chris looked pretty good too imo
I remember reading about this several years ago and it was alluded to that he was awarded the Mr Olympia crown because he had been competing so long and had never won it. I think he was also said to be retiring after this Mr O so that factored in as well.
Phil Heath
lol. Haters gonna hate. Phil is the most impressive physique since Dorian Yates.
No, Big Ramy crush phil heath but people are delusional
u are so terribly wrong
christoper did, that back means shit when he looks so bad, blocky, he is so narrow and witht hat terrible gut, honestly never seen worste mr olimpia
i was talking about phil too ;)
Small correction...as I understand it, Schwarzenegger did not start filming "Conan" until January of 1981, after the 1980 Mr.
Olympias.
That elbow condition i noticed that some tricep workout can cause alot of tention on the elbow and might cause this aswell
" my professional opinion"
good video. i recently saw a couple of your videos with you in them. i was surprised how young you are. you have a mature deep voice. before I saw you i thought you were in your 50'S or 60's.
Do a video on the 2007 olympia pleasee. Victor definitely deserved the win
Porn violdioa
Nick’s strength and no harsh words used here.
Imagine the people’s elbow with that thing?
LOL! I've got those same elbows, I've NEVER used steroids, and I look like Cråp !!! Thanks for your Vids. I enjoy your informative commentary. Pressing "Like" for sure.
"Yes he's gay but has nothing to do do with me thinking his pysique is the least impressive".
That never entered my head ........ until NOW!
wow look at that shot with Dickerson and viator side by side. he's arms, shoulders and over all physic dwarf Dickerson's. unbelievble. just better separation and everything.
Franco, '81 Olympia was runner up for the LEAST impressive Olympia winner.
your videos are getting better, I like your topics and you know your stuff...1) make a video on 1981 Olympia and the line up, it was another bad year.
He should have never of been a Mr. O my 2 cents.
Dickerson's most notable body part was his calves. Odd that they are not mentioned. They were phenomenal as you can see in the video.
I agree, never could see how Chris placed so high, but you make some good arguments.
I always thought of him as 'Lionel Ritchie with muscles'.
Let me be 52 looking like that 😍
You're all forgetting this was one of the years they actually took the posing routines into consideration for some reason.
I think Dickerson had very impressive symmetry, which was very valued during this era.
George12String small arms
Seriously? Lol. Look at those photos. Symmetry not even once.
Ice J this dude had no guns, no traps.
Yes, both arms were equally terrible.
Lol, agreed
Can you go into more detail about how judges rate these body builders at these competitions ? Possibly compare a few peoples, chests, back and give us your opinion on which one is better and why.. To me, I could not tell who has the most impressive physique.. They all looked jacked to me.
I agree completely. Many of the competitors in that picture had far better physiques than Dickerson.
