- Watering your foundation properly can save you thousands of dollars on future repairs and a lot of headache. Jim Dutton explains how to properly set up the DIY watering system. Foundation watering should be done year-round, not just during the hot summer months.
Thanks for making this video. I feel a lot better about adding foundation irrigation to my house now. One thing that would be helpful is if you could add a couple of things to the description, such as; a bulleted list of steps, a bulleted list of parts, maybe even specific brands and/or part numbers. A lot of youtubers are doing this as it helps viewers use these videos as reference.

Shoot. Soaker hoses suck to use. I have 3. A 25' 50' and 100'. The 50' is almost useless after the first 25'. The 100' works ok. But can def see a difference on water output from beginning to end. 25' is the best. I also have it on for 3 hours at midnight. Soil is still shrinking from the house. 115 degree is no joke

Thanks for the info. I just installed a system like this on Monday. I did deviate by using drip line instead of soakers and I put the filter before the timer instead of after. We have a lot of sediments in our water. Seems to be working so far.
This is a must in TX! One suggestion I would make as a licensed irrigator, replace the soaker hose with drip line. The soaker hose doesn't distribute the water evenly across the entire length. The end furthest from hose bib will get very little water while the segment closest will get too much. Drip line solves this problem. The box stores sell it in a kit or individually or you can also buy on line. Its just as easy to install as the soaker hose but will be much better at watering and last a lot longer.
My husband just spent more than 20k for foundation repair 2 months ago. I heard about this watering foundation in Texas. I have drip irrigation set up in my front and side yard just for my roses. Now I am going to extend my drip irrigation system not only for my roses but now i have to focus on my foundations as well. My question now is, does the water dripping on my house foundation have to be 12-18 inches away from my foundation?? thought it has to drip on the actual foundation..lol
If you have an existing irrigation system and are fairly handy couldn’t you tie it into an existing zone?
@@shaggyfilms You can but it needs to be drip. Precipitation rate on spray is much higher so it’s not really compatible to mix the two.
Hi Mark, can you please provide more information about which drip line and which products you used? Did you buy them from home depot?
@@nishikantmore You need to buy 17mm drip line, 1 ft spacing on emitters, 0.6 gph. Pressure regulator ( 30-40 PSI) and screen filter.
Place drip line about 1’ from foundation. Cover with dirt or mulch to protect it. Home Depot is NOT the place to source as they don’t cary these items.
Go to irrigation supplier who is staffed with experienced personnel unlike most big box stores.

Firstly let me thank you for this video. Do I use a soaker or a drip hose around my house? Can I bury the soaker/drip hose and do I have to be concerned about breakage of the hose? There are several schools of thought regarding this but I must say I very much like what you are advising but I thought I would check with you. One last thing ... will the soaker/ drip hose clog up being underground.
I would be most grateful for any advice you can offer me.

I was told you only need to turn on the soaker hose during years with a drought. Is that correct? Or should I simply make adjustments to the amount of time the water runs? More during dryer times, less during the wet season for example?
What would you do with raised stone garden beds around the foundation? Would you burry in front of the stones on ground level since the garden will be dug in frequently or burry deeper in the raised bed but making it a pain if needing to change the hose?
You would be a multi millionaire if you made a set up that was a timer, filter, and regulator all in one.

Yes you can. I'm not sure how he came up with his price for drip irrigation but it's no where near the price he quoted. Drip is much more efficient that soaker hoses.
I’m noticing some doors sticking, is it too late to do this?
I wish I had known this prior to buying my house. All the doors are starting to bind, I will do this, but will this bring the foundation back up and fix the issue, or do I need someone to come look at it?

My house has gravels 2.5 feet around the perimeter. Should I run the the hose on top of the gravel or around the gravel?

The soaker hoses that turn up in my searches are all 1/4 inch diameter ones. The ones you see me to be using in the video are thicker, aren't they? Is there a preferred diameter?

Would you turn it off in winter or keep it running 2 times a day year round? I’m in Austin. So my fear is something would burst, if it froze.

The pressure regulators I'm seeing say 25 psi - is that okay or do I need to find one that's 10/15 or 20?
Not sur3e what to do in this situation - my back concrete patio stretches about 15 feet back and meets up with my neighbors concrete sidewalk, so I can't water around it. But the patio has shifted and there's about a 2 inch gap between the house and the edge of the patio. Should i try to fill that? Water it? Leave it alone? I know generally you're not supposed to water right up against the house.
I bought a soil moisture sensor to place near by, but not sure what my target moisture level should be. Any advice?

A regular soaker hose will rot and it will fail. And putting it above ground will not do any good. I agree with the idea, but you need to put in a buried hard plastic dripline irrigation system with test stations to inspect periodically and make sure it working. And, it's a lot harder to put in than you think. Lots of elbow grease my friends. But, do it either way yourself or pay someone. In North Texas all drip irrigation is exempt from water conservation watering times.

I put the soaker hose with the regulator on there and the water is still not making It all the way to the end. It’s all coming out right away. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

Not sure who you are asking, but me personally, I try to do them only in the fall & winter, unless the foundation zone is part of a complete new install or I just don't have anything else to do, which I'm usually tied up in the warmer months doing repairs. The reason is it takes me at least 2 days to complete a full foundation drip system.
I have a walk way that splits my front lawn. How do I get the hose to work on both sides without going under the concrete?
I have a neighbor that bored under his sidewalk and driveway. I'd have to ask but I think he used PVC and drilled numerous holes or he spliced in a micro drip hose.
I had the same issue but luckily there was a step and a sidewalk expansion joint between the sidewalk and foundation. I was able to run the soaker hose over the expansion joint with the hose holes pointing down. The hose is currently exposed but away from foot traffic, not the best choice but better than going under the sidewalk.
What about winter in Dallas where it can reach freezing temps? Turn off in winter?

Professional foundation drip lines DO NOT cost $3-4K. Maybe with some contractors, but I am a licensed & insured irrigation professional in Texas and charge $500-$1200 (or slightly more) depending on a few things, such as the difficulty of the install, whether there is room for another zone on the existing controller for another zone, if there is an extra wire available to the new valve, or if the customer simply only wants a cheap timer coming off the faucet like in this video.
What if you don't have an existing sprinkler system already?
@@cryoburned Then I recommend the Orbit B-Hyve, Hunter Bluetooth BTT, or DIG brand faucet timers, & also use good pro dripline (Netafim, Hunter, Rain Bird, Landscape Products (avoid Home Depot/Lowe's/big box dripline), 12" spacing & .9 or 1.0 GPH) and sod "jute" staples and proper dip fittings (all sold at professional irrigation shops like Ewing, Site One, & Longhorn, & Sprinkler Warehouse), bury the dripline a few inches away from the foundation, and cover as much of the foundation as possible. It's easier to use 2 controllers instead of 1, because if you use 1 controller, you'll have to bore underneath the sidewalk to get to the other side of the house, & if you use 2 controllers, you won't have to bore under. Run for 20-30 minutes everyday in summer & 2-3x/week in spring & fall, & turn off in wet/cold conditions. Hope that helps!

Edward K OK Soaker hose is only good for a year or two, because the quality is cheaper and just doesn’t last as long as professional drip line, and I recommend brands such as Netafim (Israeli company who invented drip line), Hunter, Rain Bird, or what I personally use, which is Landscape Products sold at Ewing Irrigation.

Once you see signs of foundation problems, is it too late to start watering? Should I get the foundation fixed and then start a watering program, or start watering and then get it fixed ?
Won't the little holes in the hose get closed with dirt if you bury it?
Worse are the roots that grow into the hose
You’ll have to put it in a “filter tube sock” to help prevent that. Basically lay some filter fabric in your trench and add a bit of pea gravel. Then lay your hose, cover it with more gravel, then wrap over the filter fabric and fill the trench with your remaining dirt!

What about soil stabilization? I was recently advised to use soil stabilization vs. a foundation watering system.
Soil stabilization and foundation watering are 2 different things. Soil stabilization is injecting chemicals like lime into the soil to stablize it. This is done prior to pouring your foundation. Watering is to keep the soil from backing away from our foundation
