I know a girl working in upholstery that sliced a chunk of her left index finger off from the first joint partly into her fingernail right against the bone. It was traumatic. I didn't ask if it was a rotary or utility type cutter, but either way I think of that often and try my best to be safe. She was holding down her guide and in a big hurry cutting along the guide very fast when the accident occurred. Can't be too careful!

I wear a chain mail glove…because I know someone who lost part of a finger and it freaks me out.

The first time I used a rotary cutter I ended up at the ER! Ouch! I never use the cutter unless my other hand has a fish scale glove on. I learned my lesson. Thanks for the tips of how to replace blades safely.

Brilliant ideas! I safely dispose of my old blades but never thought to use the thin plastic to separate them or the magnetic. I also put the date on my cutter with the date change my blades. Thanks for the great hints.

The magnet is a really great idea. I put my old used blade is a package the new one come in and mark it as dull/used. Thanks for sharing

I sliced my index finger with a dull blade. 12 stitches inside and 12 outside. Thanks for reinforcing the safety of rotary blades.

I shattered a rotary blade once, cutting up canvas bags! Quite exciting.

I use dull blades to cut out paper for my designs & paper piecing. I feel it's very important to dispose of used blades in a manner that protects anyone who is dealing with your trash!!! Thanks for the great tips, Laura 🥰!

Using the plastic to separate the bulk blades is a fantastic idea. I ended up damaging my new blades as I couldn't get them apart. Thank you.

I really appreciate the tip on using a piece of strong packaging plastic. I have been using my fingernail to separate the blades n I’m always scared I’m gonna cut myself.

For the old blades I use the old plastic containers that the blades came in. Of course I mark the container as Used. When the Used container gets full, I throw it away with the trash.

Never thought of using a metal tin or plastic strips, so thank you for sharing. Just curious, how and where do you dispose of your old used rotary blades?

❤ the use of the plastic. I too, use the duller blades for cutting paper. ? Do you wipe off the oil from the blade before you cut fabric? If not, won't you leave oil marks on the fabric?
Thanks for your tips, they are so helpful!

I wish I had known. I jumped the ruler and almost chopped my finger off. God in His mercy healed my finger.

I dont think a CANDY tin is a good idea ... anyone could open it, expecting candy, and get cut!! Even on old blades ... I use old, LOCKING prescription pill bottles ... they work great

I think she does not have to worry, as it's just her in the sewing room. If she had curious kids, it may be an issue but even then, anything sharp would have to be out of reach. I do seen your point.
