HIGH WATER LEVELS affect kayak camping! Advanced Elements Lagoon, Kokopelli Moki Lite, lake Roxen

  • This improvized #kayakcamping trip in July 2024 with my friend Ulrika brought us out on Lake Roxen, Sweden, paddling from Bergs slussar to the city of Linköping and setting up camp in between. The area was flooded due to very high water levels, and much of what was normally land on the map was now water or "swamp-like" areas. We managed to find a campsite near a bird observation tower!

I like that you got all your stuff on a Lite and a Lagoon. Next challenge - to see if there is room for a dog as well!

Thanks - yes, I was actually skeptical myself, with minimal space on the Lagoon and not all that much on the Moki Lite, but it actually worked (as long as the backpacks/carry bags were left on shore). Encouraging for me as I might choose to use the Moki Lite for solo kayak camping at some point, based on this experience. The dog would be too much, I think, but sadly, there's no dog available to tag along 🙂 We met one recently though - it can be seen in this video. ua-cam.com/video/k1fcostGwsM/v-deo.html

Nice camp spot you found in all the high water!🤗

Yes, it worked out nicely! Some mosquitoes / gnats there though so we had to keep the light turned off as it attracted them (while eating outside the tent). We were considering putting the tent up on top of the bird watching platform at first before we realized there was enough dry ground to do so!

@@Chronically_Outdoors Hehe. We kept calm, but of course it helped that I had checked the map beforehand and knew our likely options, closer and further away. The next day passing by these locations proved me basically right - but as anticipated, it wasn't that easy anywhere. If the wind had picked up further we might have had some increased urgency to reach land. We did have a backup option we reached near here though of a small creek where we could at minimum have paddled in for shelter.

Reminds me of the high water levels you had along the river Hull, George / @the-river-rat.

Wow Patrik I have no idea how you managed to get through that area and hit land at night. Did you use the Force lol Great video buddy 👍 and I bet you where happy to get to the cafe. Your friend seems nice and I bet you both had a great time on the water and off.

Yes, it wasn't easy, some short wading on my part in shallow water (required as my fin hit the bottom so I couldn't paddle further) was involved, plus then walking some distance along a fence with electric wires only to have us realize that there was the possibility to enter from the other side. The Force would have been very helpful for this 🙂 A headlight helped though. Mine ran out of battery just as we arrived here only allowing short burst of light - even more fun! I did have a charger and cable ready in a drybag though so I could have charged it, but used the flashlight of my phone while walking on land. The headlight came in handy during tent setup though! My friend and I know each other since forever - we went to high school together but now live in different parts of the country, so this was a nice opportunity to meet somewhere in betweeen for a two-day paddle.

@@AirOnTheWater You should make another video about this explaining what went wrong because of mistakes. But even though things went bad because you were prepared and knew how to solve them it all turned out great. Could be helpful for new paddlers who think nothing bad can happen.
So nice that you had a chance to see your friend.

@@THE-RIVER-RAT Good point! I'll make one or more additional videos from this trip when time allows - so much in the queue - and then will be happy to discuss this further. Actually, as you say, the key was to have done the research in advance so we knew the potential landing locations, and the "swampiness" is there in some parts anyway in normal conditions, so that wasn't a surprise. The higher water levels just made everything worse and meant that land borders didn't match the map in many places. We knew what we were getting into in this area before leaving shore and in a worst case scenario we could have simply kept paddling some additional kms towards the creek heading into the city of Linköping (but more likely into another creek that was south of here). We might have had to rely on the kindness of some house owners to let us use their grounds to set up a tent overnight in some locations, but one way or another, it would have worked out. The main mistake was basically that we underestimated the time it would take us to get to the lake, passing many locks on the way - the locks were visible on the map, but knowing how easy it is to get into the water after carrying around one isn't all that easy. We didn't have a kayak trolley on this trip and would have needed one!

@@THE-RIVER-RAT Actually, I'm way ahead of you 😎 I recorded some safety notes on gear issues and other stuff (the headlight being one example), starting off from this trip and then discussing other things that could go wrong. Will put that together when time allows as a safety video.
