Communism literally does this ish to people. It does not justify doing it to communists, but what would the communists have done to the middle class of Chile? The same thing. The key is not to swing hard to either pole.
The socialists came to power in Chile thanks to a democratic election. If you ever read what happened to Chile under Salvador Allende you wouldn't be saying this nonesense, especially when Salvador Allende isn't even a communist, he's a socialist. The first year under Allende's presidency, Chile's middle class was enriched and became bigger, but then the US headed president by Reagan at that time "made Chile's economy scream" -those are the words of Reagan himself- and then the CIA backed the military coup that brought Pinochet to power. Salvador Allende's first words when he heard the sound of skirmishes and bombardments in the presidential palace were : "I wonder what they did with poor Pinochet" ; He thought Pinochet didn't betray the state and the democracy of Chile.
Actually, by a hairline, General Pinochet avoided a Civil War. Millions of Chileans were deeply unhappy and wished Allende to quit, but he refused. Cuba helped Allende with moral support, but Chileans wanted food, they needed food. Allende's 3 years as president had Chile on its knees, hungry and angry. Sorry, but that is the truth. General Pinochet saved a million or two million Chileans from harming each other or even worse than that. Eventually, the Chilean Armed Forces restored order and led the country to success (in fact to great success). Sadly, in war or in serious conflicts there are innocent civilian casualties. I used to know many people from Chile (friends, friends-of-friends, families and so forth), but none were hurt or lost. They lived a normal life such as work and family life and followed the Armed Forces orders - anarchy doesn't work. For instance, one has to stop at a red traffic light because if you don't stop you are toast or get a ticket for traffic violation. I have been following the latest in Chile.....very sad to read about robberies, serious assaults etc etc. Looks like life in Chile is utterly out of control......very sad. I understand that the present sitting Chilean president is a very, very young man without experience....... Like a young doctor.........no thank you (yes, yes they all need practice, still no thank you). Me a guinea pig? No thank you very much.
The CIA caused the unrest. The documents were de-classified and even the New York Times acknowledged this. The hunger, the truck drivers strike, the food shortage, was all orquestrated by the United States because they didn't want a "socialist" president in their "backyard". The people you know who were never hurt or lost, they are a minority. A privileged sector, even. Most chileans lived in fear of the police and the military going mad with power and detaining people just because they felt like it. My family was tortured, beaten and persecuted because they did "unthinkable things" like organizing the neighborhood to assure all got enough to eat (this was seen as "communism" by the military). Pinochet saved nothing. Killed thounsands of chileans. Stealed millions of pesos, derived to numerous false accounts in international banks, and glorified himself saying he was saving the economy. No amount of economic stability justify killing thousands of people in concetration camps. Pinochet is our own Hitler. People who idolize him are sick, ignorant or privileged by his actions, years later.
@@25mbl1995 you mean murderer that was no better than Pinochet? Allende plunging people into hunger and surprising protests by sending in the army is not murder? Interesting. Socialists always hide the full story.

Here because Chile is actually hosting the Pan American Games right now, with that stadium being used for the ceremonies and the athletics tournaments. And if you watched their opening ceremony, it also paid tribute to those times.
Chileans took to the streets to support Allende even when the right-wing sinister boycot was underway. Allende was going to call for a Referendum in September to let Chileans decide if he stayed as President or resigned, but Allende told the wrong man about the referendum. Augusto Pinochet had managed to get close to the President and the Military Commanders who fostered Democracy (Schneider, Prats...) but he showed his true intentions days after he heard of the Referendum and he and his allies carried out the bloody Coup D´État on the 11 of September.
