“ The Battle of Chile” is a live documentary film shot at the time of the actual coup. Incredible documentary. Costa Gavras’s “Missing” , adapts Ed Horton’s story of his son, Charles Horton, killed in Chile during the coup...a chilling film....must see. I think of Chile often, and I remember this day every year. Pinochet's coup took place 7 months before we, in Portugal, had the carnation revolution, that freed us from 50 years of fascist dictatorship. So Chile was very much in our minds on April 25, 1974, and it still is.
I find it hard to accept that Allende killed himself. He had a family & many supporters in Chile. Would it not be very convenient for Pinoche & the military to say that he had killed himself as opposed to being murdered in the coup d’etat! RIP all those who were killed as supporters of Allende.
@@chloeuntrau4588 there are some serious questions that needs to be answered. The initial report was that he short himself, but Luis Ravanal has been studying the autopsy for four years, and he believes otherwise. Ravanal says he found details in the autopsy that weren't in line with the official version of Allende's death. The cranium, he says, shows evidence of a first shot with a small gun, like a pistol, and then, a second shot from a larger weapon - like an AK-47 - which could mean that Allende was shot and killed, then shot a second time with his own gun, to make it look like suicide.

17:18 - I have to say that I think the obsession with whether Allende committed suicide or was murdered by the attackers of La Moneda is *bizarre*. Why is it dishonorable if Allende killed himself rather than be taken alive (as I believe he did)? Pinochet forces, before completing the coup, allegedly offered Allende safe passage to Cuba and he refused. One might argue (though I wouldn't) that exile under those circumstances would have been cowardly. But how can his determination to remain in the Palace until the very end be cowardly? It seems like a macho or even a Catholic thing to hold him in contempt for reacting to a hopeless situation by taking his own life. In any case, the important thing is the way Allende lived, not the circumstances of his death. For me, Allende was a hero, and whether his enemies killed him or whether he did the job himself is totally irrelevant.
Allende’s suicide was not cowardly. As he said before his death, he was not going to surrender. He chose death over fleeing the country or turning himself in to Pinochet’s forces.
Nothing has changed actually, US is playing the same game elsewhere now, presently one of many US backed coup is ongoing in Pakistan, where a democratically elected prime minister was ousted by US backed military establishment, a renowned journalist was compelled to leave his country later assassinated in Kenya, another journalist is still missing probably kidnapped by pakistani intelligence agency, many journalist fled the country and taking asylum in West, more than 10s of thousands political prisoners in jails from months yet to be convicted, the only majority political party leadership is either forced in hiding in jail or disappeared, when all this is happening in one country the West and so called civilised human rights advocate countries are 🙈🙉🙊.
@tatianalyulkin410 it's a tragedy of a nation when US topples a well functioning government and instate a weak, dependent, illegitimate ruler, they actual make the mockery of a nation that people don't matter, humans have no rights as long as a puppet is serving their interests he can do whatever he pleases, nowadays a comedian is playing role of a macho in Ukraine, what could be more ironic, they control the voice they control the views, we can just sit and watch whatever is shown to us.

The interference in Chile was clearly a mistake on multiple levels. However, the magnitude of damage was far less than that caused by the NATO-led (US financed) intervention in Libya in 2011. Twelve years later Libya remains a failed state by any measure. Chile has an ex-pat community that keeps the Allende coup out in the global public’s eye, but in terms of scale and fatalities it is among the least costly compared to interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Haiti, etc.
The "interference" in Chile cost millions of lives, directly and indirectly over decades to the present day. It forever changed Chile's destiny, and also further destabilised the entire LatAm region. The U.S. coup against this democratically-elected, pacifist president waa not the first of the U.S.' global atrocities, but rather a continuatuon of the horrors it had visited on LatAm alone (!) since the Monroe Doctrine. In sum, it's not a Victimhood Olympics. Regardless, every instance of U.S. greed, mayhem, and murder that has plagued those countries that have something of interest to the U.S. power base has been tragic and has lasting consequences for all of us.

A bit of irony there. Is there a democracy that was not interfered with, or overthrown by the U.S. because it wanted to keep its natural resources for the benefit of its citizens?
Coup is not the problem anymore than a weapon. They are means to an end. The problem is the motives for the end. I can't think of any American motives other than sheer greed.
I always ask myself how could Allende committed suicide when he had a rifle? For me he was killed by the army no body was there to be a witness so they can say whatever they want.
We’ll, I salute Dorfman for being critical of certain mistakes by the movement led by the great Salvador Allende, but he fails to be more critical of current US stands and mainstream stance against Latin American.
Socialism will fix this. LOL
This is how USA promotes democracy
For usa democracy = dictatorship. That is their mantra.!!
Being anti-communist? I view that as a win win
I've been looking for a novel about Allende. Thanks for this!
“ The Battle of Chile” is a live documentary film shot at the time of the actual coup. Incredible documentary.
Costa Gavras’s “Missing” , adapts Ed Horton’s story of his son, Charles Horton, killed in Chile during the coup...a chilling film....must see. Ed Horton, a Manhattan native, was played by Jack Lemmon. I saw these movies in 70s and never forgot them.

As an American citizen, I was so ashamed of our country. Our foreign policy at the time forced countries to turn to the Communists because it was our way or no way.
You're brainwashed. "our way" or "no way"...no, that's not true, and you know that because of all the countries in the world that do not do it "our way" or "communist way" and are doing fine and have lots of trade with our country and other countries. If you want, I can break down how much of what Ariel Dorfman is wrong, and I don't know if he just chooses to cherry pick to fit his narrative or if he's more active in rejecting verifiable facts which are there.

@Supertaldo916 Cope. Allende's policies were shit.
I think of Chile often, and I remember this day every year. Pinochet's coup took place 7 months before we, in Portugal, had the carnation revolution, that freed us from 50 years of fascist dictatorship. So Chile was very much in our minds on April 25, 1974, and it still is.
Thank you. Keep getting truth out. Love from Scotland.

Wow what a profound interview! What happened to Allende was very sad, I guess the world just wasn't ready for him.
I find it hard to accept that Allende killed himself. He had a family & many supporters in Chile. Would it not be very convenient for Pinoche & the military to say that he had killed himself as opposed to being murdered in the coup d’etat! RIP all those who were killed as supporters of Allende.
@@juanleahy2202 I am sure he was murdered.
@@chloeuntrau4588 there are some serious questions that needs to be answered. The initial report was that he short himself, but
Luis Ravanal has been studying the autopsy for four years, and he believes otherwise.

The fact that Henry Kissinger is still alive at age 100 is really appalling.
He saved the human race.
lmao@@tuckerbugeater
Once again you're " conveniently " forgetting Ukraine.

Thatcher made remarks about the Queen dancing with a Black PM and was later voted out of office.
Thatcher was a racist, she had been head of UK's Education system and she was known as " Margaret Thatcher the milk Snatcher " by British school children when she removed the half pint of milk they got with their school lunch.
This inspired President Reagan to economize and take away a vegetable in the American school lunch program. He said ketchup was a vegtable so they didn't need another vegetable. Actually, tomato is designated as a fruit !
Reagan also sent Tommy Sands to Thatcher and he went in a hunger strike and died in prison 61 pounds with his bones protruding out of his skin and had to be raped up.

A bit of irony there. Is there a democracy that was not interfered with, or overthrown by the U.S. because it wanted to keep its natural resources for the benefit of its citizens?
