Tony Oursler's "electronic effigies”: Between two spaces

Artist Tony Oursler is known for creating "electronic effigies" by projecting disembodied faces and voices onto sculptural forms. Oursler describes how these works bridge media and sculpture, and how contemporary uses of technology affect our self-perception.

Oursler's installation at Seattle's Central Library (the escalator tunnel) is at once engaging and disturbing. This dual reaction is intensified by the viewer's inability to stay in place viewing it because of the moving escalator. I noticed that some people catch a brief glimpse of it, then they have a "What the hell was that?!" look on their faces. (They circle back to ride the escalator again.)
