    Excellent writing. I need to improve mine following your advice. One quick question what do you think of including photo on the cv?

      Thanks for the kind feedback. Adding a photo or not depends on the country you're in and the norms in that geography. For example in the UK and North America it's not advisable to add your photo. In other places, like some countries in Asia, it is more common place to include your photo

    Hi Vicky, thanks again for very helpful content! I had a few questions:
    - when you talk about listing continuing education, do you think a certificate of completion is necessary? I've so far skipped those for a few online courses but can see their evidence value could help put them on a CV.
    - Referees: should one try to find non-academic references? Is it ok to leave them out of the CV altogether (as done here)? Do academic-only references harm the CV?
    - 3rd person language: A bit tangential, but would you recommend doing the same on one's LinkedIn profile? So far I use the 1st person, as that seems more natural, but is it better to use 3rd person when describing one's work history?
    Thanks in advance - I look forward to your next videos!

      Hey Claire, again some great questions here. Here's my take:
      - Personally I've never been asked for certificates for online professional development courses (just degree certificates). So I'd say as long as you completed the course and understood the content, you can list it. The main thing is you've extended your knowledge base.
      - It's not common practice on private sector resumes to list referees in the way we do in academia. References may be asked for later on when processing a job offer. But even then it tends to be a check that what you've stated on your resume was accurate (start dates, duration of employment etc.), rather than a statement of endorsement. This is very different to academia, where failure to deliver a personal reference from a previous boss can jeopardise your chances of landing your next job.
      - No. Your LinkedIn profile should be more personal. The language used in a resume is very specific to that type of document. Even in the accompanying cover letter, you wouldn't use 3rd person. LinkedIn should definitely be 1st person - a personal introduction written in a style that makes you sound approachable.
      Hope this helps!

    Great movie! I'm very curious about what you think about the rules for a good layout. The examples you gave in the movie have a very simple layout, hence the question. Do you think that introducing a little bit of color helps to attract the recruiter's attention?

      This is an interesting question Natalia and one I've asked many recruiters before, but received mixed responses. My personal opinion is that a more stylised resume/CV might help you standout in a pile, and be eye catching (clearly the content needs to keep the reader's attention though). Some recruiters have told me it doesn't make any difference to them, they look straight at the first page and if it doesn't resonate (colours/infographics aside) then they'll reject outright. Others have been more negative in their feedback saying they dislike too much design and in particular infographics for most roles (with the exception of very creative ones - such as graphic design). I'm also concerned how very stylised applications would fair in the ATS software. Other recruiters I've spoken have been a bit more positive and told me they're seeing more and more stylised resumes/CVs, so it's become more mainstream (even outside creative roles). But when I pushed them further to ask if they'd reject a plainer layout in favour for a more stylised one, they said that their decision would be based on content alone. So personally with such mixed views around it might be safer to air on the side of caution for now and stick with something more mainstream, (certainly for technology roles I'd say). However this is likely to be a very subjective thing between individual recruiters, where personal preferences might be based on things like geographical location and job type.

      @@biomedbadass4064 Wow, this is such an in-depth reply :)
      Well, I dare to say that with recruiters it's the same as with journal editors: they make a binary decision and they *think* they decide solely based on the content. Well, most of the time, this is not so simple and there are lots of other, subconscious influences. Frankly, I would have an issue with answering this question properly. If I was about to apply for a job right now, I would probably use mild, pastel colors for my application. Something that isn't 100% white but at the same time, it isn't garish and doesn't waste your eyes.

      @biomedbadass4064  4 роки тому +2

      @@OntologyofValue yes I agree with that synopsis on subconscious influences. It's certainly a tricky one. All things weighed up, I think in general you'd do well to play it safe. But I don't think a bit of colour is harmful. In fact I use some colour in my own personal resume (you might be able to see this in the thumbnail)...
      The idea of this video is to explain how the content can be shaped to land an interview in industry. The discussion around layout and asthetics probably warrants a whole separate video in its own right!
