I remember seeing the original mortal Kombat in the theatre as a teenager. As soon as the techno music started to play the whole place started to cheer. Say what you want about the original, that sound track kicked ass!
Yes! It was such a cool experience seeing that in the theater. I think I ended up going 2-3 times. MOOOORRRTALLL KOOOOMMMBAT!!
With sooooo many characters in the MK universe, it seemed so unnecesary to make a new fresh one.
Seriously
That's prob my only real issue with the movie... It wasn't great but not as bad as some say
He's basically a different version of Takeda though, so not that huge of a deal.
Completely agree about Cole. His character was.."fine." But it was such an unnecessary addition to the story. I've never been a fan of characters made to convey the story to the audience.
Thinking on it? If anything to have a "relatable" normal human, they could've just gone with Stryker. :v
I think another UA-camr said it but he represented the character creation role from the recent games. Not really part of the main storyline but it's still there.
How dare you refer to Mario Bros. and Street Fighter as masterpieces sarcastically lol. Also, thanks for the shout out.
My faves are what people call the worst!
Yeah the fights looked kinda cool but the new main character was not needed and other stuff about it was... meh.
Kano was breaking his back from carrying the movie by himself.
The best adaptations we've gotten recently is Scorpion's Revenge and the story modes of the last two games.
Meh. I honestly found the new MK movie and Scorpion's Revenge were equally mediocre for entirely different reasons.
@@orinanime ...Good for you, I guess?
I was planning on watching this with my mother this weekend! she's hyped bc mk was the only video game she got into back in the arcades
Thanks for the awesome review. You watched the other 85 minutes or so of run time, so I won't have to, ever. Thanks for taking one for the team!
I LOVE that when you mentioned Linden Ashby being hilarious as Johnny Cage, you played my absolute favorite line from the character! YES!
"...so now we're on a collision course with wackiness!!"
PERFECT. 10/10 review. Love your work, please do more movie reviews.
While I have no idea if the movie still holds up with future watches, I know for a fact that I fangirled hard at the majority of this movie
I agree. I loved the original back in the day. I was so pumped up that when I got home from the theater I shadowboxed for at least an hour and was ready to sign up for kung fu lessons.
I completely agree with you on every point, I almost feel as if we might have been sitting next to each other at the theater, and the. Went and had coffee afterwards to talk about it. It was a good flick, worlds better than Annihilation, but the original still was more fun... even though Goro looked like a turd in that one.
This movie was garbage. The first 5 mins tricked us.
Cole should have gotten Scorpions powers for his "gift" and then just removed Scorpion from the Sub-Zero battle at the end.
This movie was a badly cosplayed fanfic...with "superpowers."
I had zero expectations and thoroughly enjoyed it! I'm hoping there's a sequel.
I love the cheesyness of video game movie adaptations.
I didn't hate the movie, but it definitely dragged on in parts, and I feel like Kano was a bit much. It's like someone trying to shove a whole pizza down your throat. I love pizza, but please don't shove it down my throat. He had his moments, but I felt like his constant prattling took more away from the movie than it added.
The scenes with Scorpion were my favorite. Also the jokes about Cole having literal plot armor were appreciated.
My favorite fight was Cole vs Icicles in front of his frozen family. Hilarious.
Me2 honestly speaking I didn't think it was bad people take the Mortal Kombat story of the video game a lot more serious than it deserves
Best video game movie ever they got it down to fatalities and characters so gory and so good!!
Can’t wait for the MORTAL KOMBAT II
I also enjoyed this movie and agree with all of your criticisms, especially with some of the casting decisions. I'm hopeful for a sequel with Johnny Cage included.
I am still holding out for the Samurai Showdown movie!
Did you ever see the goofy anime movie?
@@orinanime no... I should have known there was one!
I liked the movie alot it never seemed slow to me and Kano was hilarious. I was a bit torn on kung lao I felt he had one of the coolest parts and one of the worst parts of the movie. Some of the actors did sign multi movie contracts so they for sure planned on making sequels as long as it did good. The movie made more money than it cost but im not sure what they consider successful enough to make more. I didnt really care one way or the other on the main hero I am guessing the director thought it would help make you feel like a clueless person thrown into some unknown ancient battle.
I think this movie got a bad rap... Id watch a sequel... It wasn't a great movie but it was a fun couple of hours
Too many cuts ruined almost all of the fights. The rivalry between Sub-Zero and Scorpion is the best part of the movie. If they either drop Cole or make him more interesting, and get better fight choreography and editing, the next one will be much better.
Awesome thanks 👍
Agree 💯
The new Mortal Kombat is better than part two but not as good as part 1.
Nice review. I actually did a review on my channel. I didn’t like it. But respected your input!
Plot was crap. Visuals were great!
So, when I first heard that Johnny Cage wasn't going to be in the movie, I was actually pretty excited about that! I usually found him to be the least likable kharacter in the whole roster for every game he was in until MK11, where his kharacter wasn't actually insufferable to watch compared to everyone else. One would think the movie would do their best to make a cool AF replacement for the such an omission, right? No. Not really. We got a blank slate of a hero with no connection whatsoever to any game in the series. He's pretty much as generic and safe of an OC you could make. Would I actually have preferred Johnny in the movie after all that? ...Yeah. Just don't make him an important kharacter to the plot like a lot of the games have done. He's a good side kharacter at best.
In terms of other things to note for other kharacters...they're solid. Raiden is portrayed pretty oddly in comparison to the games. They really channeled the energy of his MK1 ending into this incarnation I guess. Jax was cool, but his arms suddenly upgrading to save someone was just all sorts of dumb. They should have just been like that from the start. It was interesting to see how the movie decided to portray Sonya's rings, which I thought was pretty kool. I hate that Bi-Han was given no backstory, and just portrayed him solely as a cold (heh) blooded killer. Kano took Johnny's spot as komedy relief, to actually pretty great results. Reptile was done fucking dirty like he has been throughout the entire rest of the franchise. Goro looked damn awesome, but being killed by the OC was the biggest downer of the movie.
But you want to know what left me scratching my head going 'What the fuck?' at the very end of the movie? The Johnny Cage tease. After the director himself said he didn't want Cage in the movie. After all the controversy that caused. Like...unless they're consciously trolling with a sequel-bait that they have no intention of making (which, let's be real, covid took a huge bite out of this movie's earnings no matter how you look at it. I almost didn't even get to see it until the last day it was in theaters because my roomates and I all dragged our feet on deciding to watch it), I can only see it as perhaps the biggest troll that any movie has ever made in the history of cinema. So, if the movie got one thing right, it was probably that.
My overall thoughts? The less you know about specific MK lore, the better, if you want to view the movie as objectively as possible. Like...it means you won't feel as miffed about certain decisions as other people like me would. Johnny SHOULD have been in the movie, but only as a support kharacter. Give the blank hero slate to either Liu Kang or someone else who didn't make it into the movie, like Nightwolf. Or, you know, just do him dirty by having him be an Easter Egg for a few frames, instead of giving native Americans any representation at all. Everyone likes that, right?
When did the director say that he didn't want Johnny Cage?
@@orinanime In interviews. I'm sure Google can fill you in.
@@emmastarr5242 I've looked. I've been following the production of this movie off and on for a while. I definitely missed it.
@@emmastarr5242 i checked again for a bit this afternoon. I didn't see specifics on anything.
I'll say it. Political correctness needs to go. Its good to see that my family served and fought in the military to see the country fill up with snowflakes and flowers . Now no one can make a joke or mistake. Yeah that was a waste .
On a more positive note you have a great channel and I am subscribing. Thank you sir.
I never liked the Mortal Kombat games, even back in the days. And I was big in fighting games back then. I loved the fatalities, that is a GREAT concept I want in ALL fighting games. But on a technical aspect, as a fighting game, the proposal was very poor. I keep trying over the years but never found anything appealing. There are too many great fighting games to waste my time with something that is fun because of that fatalities but has no challenge to offer. Then, I came accross a sale on Mortal Kombat XI ($ 10). Pick it up, tried it and felt in love immediately. We finally have a great Mortal KOmbat game! We are different persons, maybe you will not like it but at least, give it a try! And my opinion on the movie is the same as yours. I went to see a movie based on a videogame, not expecting a masterpiece, and I saw a movie that has some great moment, some bad ones, but it was very entertaining!
And for Cole, you have to blame Marvel! Mortal Kombat clearly wants to be a saga with multiple episodes, using the same receipe. Each character were pretty much introduced one by one, a movie at the time ($$$). You had this huge build-up that lead to Infinity Wars, and more is coming. Cole is only meant to delay the introduction of other key characters because the more movies, the more money. It also allow the producers to test the water. If Cole is accepted, why not introduce a couple of new guys? The more movies, the more money... My only issue is that it's painfully too obvious...
