This video is a god send. All these van build videos make it seem like anyone can do it. You never see this type of information on the potential outcome of DIY and/or hiring the wrong people to work on it. I don’t want any of these problems. Therefore, I will not attempt this at home.

My goodness, the previous van hack job is horriffic! What a nightmare. This should be required viewing for everyone considering DIY

What I really like is that during the whole 20 minute interview the owner didn't laugh at all, not even once, but he was driving away smiling at the end.

Labor of love - That's the feeling you get from problem-solving and Making stuff. Be it a van build or otherwise. It is human nature to optimize your project - that's why your 10 friends are always thinking of the build. Like I have found in my build (2 years in - slept in it a total of 11 months) there is 'no f'n way" you can get it right the first time because as you live in it you feel you want to change shit - a self-built van facilitates the change you wish to make. I wouldn't do it any other way - as usual - your mileage may vary.

Terry, you have a great point. I am far from being a craftsman so I think my first attempt at a van build would look even worse than the DIY build featured in this video. Since I have to work (unfortunately) time is money and money is time I am looking for an easy way to get out and and enjoy with family and friends with the limited time I have available. I am going with VanDOit because they will get it a lot closer than me the first or 100th time. I found it interesting when reading Faroutride (faroutride.com/cost-and-labor/) They estimated up-fitting of $18,000 in components and 640 hrs of labor(actually they say closer to 1000). At 640 hrs, that is 26 days out in the wild! Mileage always varies.

@@kschuler919 It's certainly more than $18k (without the van) lfor me and 1000 hours labouring and 1000 hours figuring sounds about right. I'm not disputing that getting an upfitter to do the build works for most people. I commented because the video gave the impression that it was the only way otherwise you won't be having any fun - just working on the van. NOT The Case at al...
Ya - faroutride's attention to detail is amazing on their blog - they began the blog when I began my build.
For you time is money - do what works. For me being able to change things around ( & I did a bunch or that) after living in it has been without a doubt invaluable. Good luck with yours.

My god that is a serious holy hot mess. I'm so glad we traded in our motor home and are now waiting for our Vandoit. What a massively badass decision!

I heard you say something that you can finance the build or purchase a van ? If so can I be insured as an rv ?

    • @vandoitco

Randy I use Progressive and they are giving me full replacement value for the first 2 yrs and then it shift to current mkt value. The rate was way more attractive than AAA for me in Michigan.
