  • An IVF lab is where the IVF treatment actually takes place. Once the eggs and sperm have been extracted from each partner, the process of fertilization under sterilized conditions takes place in the laboratory. Therefore, good laboratory facilities are absolutely necessary and crucial for the success of IVF treatment.

Here are some must-have facilities in every successful IVF laboratory:
    - Quality Control and assurance: QC and QA are critical for any laboratory to produce accurate results. Labs must be fully equipped with all the necessary equipment including a temperature probe, CO2 analyzer, Humidity control, and VOC meter.
    - Robust double witnessing protocol: Labs must follow a strict double witnessing protocol, which means witnessing two parameters by two persons is required at every point involving patient gametes or embryos.
    - The Embryology lab: Should have modular walls, and be light and temperature controlled. It should be well equipped with all the necessary and advanced equipment including an advanced IVF incubator with an inbuilt time-lapse camera. The use of a time-lapse camera helps improve IVF-ICSI by 10% per cycle.
    - Andrology lab: Labs must offer comprehensive andrology services by experienced andrologists and state of the art andrology facilities.
    - Air Handling Unit: Air Handling Units (AHUs), ensure clean circulation of air, maintain an ideal temperature, and positive pressure inside the lab.
    - Cryopreservation and PGS/PGD room: Separate rooms must be present for PGS and vitrification, fertility preservation, and a separate cryo tank for seropositive samples.
    - Laminar Flow Hood: Laminar airflow hoods that are temperature-controlled and used for dish preparation and manipulation of gametes should be present in any IVF lab.
    - Heracell Incubator: They help minimize disturbance while in culture.
    - Culture Incubators: This ensures better culturing for the embryos.
    - Media and Consumables: All media and consumables must be obtained from standard companies. All should be free of toxins, none are reused. They should be stored in separate refrigerators in the IVF lab.
    - Audits: Regular internal and external audits for SOP, record maintenance, stock consumption, etc are paramount
