      @@renst3163 I'm from a poor country and I know a LOT of people that have switches as their main console simply because of piracy, outside of phones, the switch is one of the more accessible ways of playing games here: the console is cheap, easy to mod and you won't go broke from game purchases . I'm saying this because there are probably dozens of reasons people use this console docked.

      Nah, I’m that rare player too. I almost never play my Switch handheld. Nothing against that kind of gaming of course, I just prefer to see my games on a bigger screen.
      And before any smart-alecks ask “What’s the point of getting a Switch then if you’re not going to use its main gimmick?” My answer is…why do you care, lol? Play your games (or don't) however you want, and I’ll play mine however I want.

      There is more to better graphics than resolution. But I assume you didn’t mean that literally. I do think it’s disappointing that the one game they showed looked like it could run flawlessly on the switch 1. There are more graphically impressive switch 1 games than this.

      @@56ty_ Smaller hands, such as those of children could have more difficulty with the larger size. Not to mention Pro Controllers and other more ergonomic controllers are more commonly used by docked players than handheld players. Magnetic joycon attachment doesn't help docked mode at all. So you're really just talking about mouse mode, which Nintendo didn't actually show in the reveal. Sure, they turned the pair on side and had them race across a surface, but we never see them control an on-screen pointer. Thats a rumor that while probably spot on, wasn't actually confirmed in the video, nor do we know how they intend to use a mouse in games. Its not inconceivable its used as much as the IR sensor.
      So what are we talking about indeed? No feature seen of the joycons in the reveal video was a surefire benefit to docked players.

    I think the main reason Nintendo would never make a TV only switch is because the kind of people who prefer playing on their big TV with a pro controller are also the kind of people who would never want to buy a product with stripped out features.

    • @PolitiClank
      @PolitiClank 11 годин тому +5

      That is true, but I think a TV only 'Nintendo Switch: Fami" releasing this year at a hyper budget price containing joycons (they can use the official charging stand if it is cheaper) would be a great device to cater to the care home/Mario Kart/Switch Sports for parties/etc audience, and those who simply want a Switch for one or two games they missed in it's lifespan would fit excellently into their existing strategy for selling the console at the end of it's life.

    • @lilisaur
      @lilisaur 8 годин тому +4

      @PolitiClank I like the concept, I don't like the timing. If this was something Nintendo wanted to do, they'd have likely done it last year. Besides the obvious cost of redesigning the console and retooling factory lines to produce it, I don't think Nintendo will want to approach holiday 2025 with two new pieces of hardware in retail stores. (Three if you count Alarmo, but its much more clearly not a game console from packaging.)
      I think Nintendo will want to be very clear that Switch 2 is "the new thing" and not have any other "new thing" on the shelf beside it that could create confusion. The Wii Mini was introduced to Canada for holiday season 2012 (same season as Wii U) and in USA for holiday season 2013 (what should have been seen as the biggest holiday season for Wii U, since it was introduced so late in 2012.) It probably did more actual harm to Wii U sales in those regions than the oft-blamed "U" part of the name. Having something both newer and cheaper on the shelves at holiday season is a very bad decision. Cheaper is okay when its clearly older, but a new dockless model introduced in October or November could repeat the Wii Mini/Wii U mistake.
      And to clarify, I don't think the 2 in the name necessarily gets the point across that its the superior model, if you have something else with a suffix like "Mini" or "Fami". If there's any late season advertising that promotes a Switch Fami as newer and buyers are mindful of it, that can undermine the "2 = new" concept. Furthermore, some stores, particularly Best Buy in USA and Canada, show release dates to customers on their pricing labels as a guide to let them know what is newer vs older, and this could also easily undermine the "2 = new" marketing. Nintendo would be much wiser to just continue building current model Switch 1s on existing factory lines until they decide they don't need to build anymore of them.

    • @PolitiClank
      @PolitiClank 8 годин тому +1

      @@lilisaurYou are right, though I sort of meant the device would be pushed out quite quickly (a release this late could conceivably be revealed in a February Direct and released in March for a sales boost ahead of the new fiscal year alongside a game like Pokémon Legends: ZA. If they keep it lower key, they can boost margins and sales without the two products touching each other. You are totally right about the production issue - it is the same problem with allowing a choice between LCD and OLED at launch.

    • @lilisaur
      @lilisaur 7 годин тому

      @PolitiClank If they can turn around a Switch 1 Mini/Fami fast enough to beat Switch 2 to market, that "might" work, but I still think its risky.
      However, a March release of new Switch 1 hardware probably wouldn't make that big of a dent in fiscal year units. You're not going to see a million or two million people jump on it in just a few weeks. Its not going to sell millions like Switch 2 does on its release.
      Pokemon Z-A is almost certain not making it in this fiscal year. No way they shadow drop such a large selling game in February, and March is already taken by Xenoblade X. Pokemon games get a few months of coverage before release, so whether its the set in the Direct or Pokemon Presents, I think April is absolutely earliest it comes, and very likely later. (There are also still rumors about Black/White remakes floating around, and if those are on agenda for November/December then it would likely put Z-A at April or May to get them spaced out as much as possible.)

      Literally the only time it plays in the trailer is in docked mode, or actively in the process of switching to docked mode. And since it’s backwards compatible I don’t even think we know if this Mario kart they showed is even a switch 2 game. I’d say there’s an 85% chance that it is and like a 15% chance that’s it’s a switch 1 title. Like we can rationally assume that it’s not a switch 1 title but nobody told us that it’s not expansion pass wave whatever. Though the new vehicles would suggest that it’s at least a new game. Probably. The new character designs less so.

  • @natetheaverage5270

    I think it's important to note that 4K output does not require rendering at 4K. Even without DLSS a game can be rendered at a lower internal resolution while the console outputs a higher one, Nintendo has been doing this since the Switch launched with Breath of the Wild running at 1600 x 900. The slowest Turing based GPUs like the GTX 1650 which can hardly handle 720p gaming can still output 8K resolutions, so the hardware is absolutely capable, the only reason to not support 4K output would be to cut costs on HDMI ports and cables. Since Nintendo moved to HDMI 2.0 with the Switch OLED which can't take advantage of the extra bandwidth, the extra cost probably isn't something they're concerned with. They'll also need these same cables and ports years later. Would HDMI 1.4 still be significantly cheaper than 2.0 in 2027? 2029? Is it even cheaper now? I can hardly find anything for sale lower than 2.1.

    • @PolitiClank
      @PolitiClank 11 годин тому +4

      Also, HDMI 2.1 would enable the use of VRR (a developer friendly feature implemented in the competitor consoles that can smooth out the judder from an inconsistent frame rate) which is a very beneficial feature that Nintendo already supports in their engine (the ease of implementation outweighs the niche availability).

      @PolitiClank VRR isn't the easiest thing to implement at the system level (as demonstrated by Sony's difficulties when it came to making the feature available not only on the PS5 console but also their own TVs) so chances that it shows up on Switch 2 are lower than just basic 4K output.

    I honestly go as far as to argue that Nintendo doesn’t consider the handheld PC market as competition at all. Those devices cater to a very niche market, to the point where a vast majority of the general public don’t even know they exist. Even the Steam Deck (arguably the biggest of the handheld PCs) isn’t available for purchase at retailers, further limiting its mainstream reach.
    As of right now, Nintendo has no real competition in the hybrid space. And until Sony &/or Microsoft enter the market, I don’t see that changing anytime soon. It’s only hard-core fans like us who gas up the handheld PCs to be bigger than they actually are. In terms of the potential upstarts you mentioned, I feel like the only one who could have a shot at penetrating the market outside of the Big 3 is Apple.

    As someone who's used the switch in docked mode for what's surely over 95% of my total playtime on the platform, it feels kinda weird knowing it isn't the primary way of playing the console. I've always looked at the switch as a home console you can take on the go, instead of a handheld you can also plug into a tv. From that Nintendo AI upscaling patent it seemed like they were weighing the possibility of having dlss work to a much greater extent in docked more, so I'm not too worried about switch 2s docked experience being cast aside, however, people who expect to see nintendo 1st party titles upscaled to 4k through dlss might be expecting a bit too much. I'd expect nintendo to stick to 1080p for the vast majority of releases, even when utilizing dlss.

      We don't know if we'll see more of Switch 2 at this presumed February Direct. Given that it seems to be leaning hard towards being a Switch 1-focused Partner Direct, they may keep almost all the Switch 2 news until April. I'd really like for them to name a few titles or at the very least finish with a "one last thing" Switch 2 tease, but I think its possible we get the same "no mention of Switch 2 in this Direct" treatment in the day-before announcement.
      I think the two events where we're more likely to get more Switch 2 news are the February 4 Investors Meeting and March 10 Mario Day. To calm some investors, I think Furukawa may have to toss another bone, just as he did in November regarding backwards-compatibility. And I find it hard we get through Mario Day and they don't show more of either the new Mario Kart or a 3D Mario (or both.) To borrow from NF, I think its a 50% chance we get something at Investors Meeting, 30% chance we get something in February Direct (which could just be the same info given at Investors meeting), and a 90% chance something on Mario Day.

    Docked mode is "niche" and 4k TVs still not that important to people?
    I don't think I've ever disagreed more with one of your videos...
    Have you even considered that a lot of us prefer to play docked but chose not to BECAUSE Switch looks terrible on our 4k displays? Nearly 40% of Asia-Pacific households own a 4k TV, while 44% of US households own a 4k capable display (as if 2023).
    4k TVs have been affordable for nearly a decade now. It's easier to find large, affordable 4k TVs than 1080p ones nows. You can get 42+ inch 4k TV for less than $300.
    Nintendo's 2024 survey said 52% of people play primarily docked mode, 41% play handheld, and the rest split between tabletop & Switch-Lite modes (yes, Switch Lite's handheld only was a separate category).
    Switch 2 games don't need to be rendered at 4k, but Nintendo can't ignore such a huge % of the population & stay stuck in the past, refusing to support 4k output.
    It's one of the major reasons I sold my Switch last year, as nothing looked good on ANY display I owned, and I wasn't interested in the tons of end-of-life ports, remasters & remakes.

    4K hasn't penetrated into the average person's life the way 1080p/720p did because manufacturers touted HD TV or HD resolution, which was easy to market to consumers and for said consumers to understand and even see next to SD. It becomes much trickier with 4K or Ultra HD which the average person doesn't perceive. Most people purchased a 1080p TV within the last 15-20 years as 4K TVs were not even released until 2012 and hadn't become mainstream until roughly 10 years ago.
    My personal opinion is most TV and movies are of little material difference in watching at 1080p or 4K. I tend to believe most consumers, who are less tech savvy than myself, are of the same opinion based on conversations with friends, family and co-workers. When I am asked for purchase advice on PCs, laptops, TVs, etc they tend to have little to no idea about 4K. This further extends into gaming as these tend to be the type to prefer plug and play systems with no fiddly bits. HDMI into TV, plug into wall, good to go. Does it hurt Nintendo to not have the 4K badge on the Switch 2 box? I doubt it.
    1440p is likely the sweet spot in docked mode as this extends beyond 1080p, while not being overly ambitious to the point of handicapping the system. According to the Steam hardware survey 1080p is still the dominant resolution even in the PC space at ~56.1% whereas 1440p is ~19.5% and 4K ~4.2% respectively. PC gaming has generally been regarded as the cutting edge in graphics vis a vis console gaming.
    Graphics are not the primary reason most gamers play on Nintendo systems as evidenced by the fact most play in both docked and handheld modes. Will the next Animal Crossing sales be hurt by not being 4K resolution? That's laughable to me, with it's chibi art style. That game is the perfect example of how ludicrous the graphics arms race is and how it's doing nothing but bloating development schedules and budgets, leading to the downfall of many formerly great studios and publishers. Nintendo is wise to meet the average gamer where they are in terms of graphically fidelity as this keeps their hardware and development costs significantly lower than the competition.

I think this is something third parties will appreciate when porting PC games, and might find some use in both first- and third-person shooter games, but the more I think about it, the more likely I think Nintendo is not going to utilize mouse mode much at all. Its' going to be a niche feature for them, much as the IR sensor was on Switch 1. The Switch 2 Labo equivalents will demand it, but I don't think we're going to see any other first party games require it. As a second play mode option, perhaps; but as the primary or preferred method, no.

    As someone who plays almost entirely on the dock, nah I didn’t feel short-changed. I have rather large hands, so playing handheld never felt very comfortable to me. Maybe I’ll play it more since the Switch 2 is a little bigger, but I like seeing my games on the big screen anyway.
    As for the specs, I’m not a stickler for that sort of thing, and I keep realistic expectations about Nintendo’s hardware power. I know I’m not going to get a high-end PC out of a little thing like the Switch 2 (especially not at an affordable price). I’m expecting 1080p docked, at best 1440p, and personally I’m fine with that (though if in the unlikely chance we get a 4K iteration down the road, I won’t complain lol).

    honestly i think that reveal trailer was purposely showing as little as possible to spite everyone for leaking so much forcing them to announce it earlier then they wanted to. but judging by how many starting lines, the little squash and stretch animations every character has, and the draw distance i think this thing may be capable of a bit more then what we expected from the shipping info leaks saying that it might be somewhere between ps4 pro-xbox series s before any DLSS

    • @lilisaur
      @lilisaur 9 годин тому +1

      I believe Digital Foundry estimated the docked TFLOPs at around 3.1 and handheld at 1.7, based entirely on the die size and expected manufacture process. A PS Pro runs a "theoretical high" of 4.2 (probably overestimated) and Xbox S at just over 4. So power-wise it looks to be coming up short. Of course, those consoles don't have to worry about battery life or a form factor that prohibits a really big fan or other cooling system.
      But Switch 2 supposedly does have both a RAM advantage, 12 GB compared to PS4 Pro's 8 and S's 10, and a storage medium speed advantage, as SD Express outpaces a PS4 Pro's SSD drive (but not the NVME drive of an S)
      So depending on the balance of CPU, RAM, and drive access needs, games could perform every bit as good as they do on PS4 Pro or S, or still look noticeably downgraded. Its going to depend a lot on what the game needs and how competent the developer is at adjusting to the different mix.
      If the shipping info or leak data is just wrong and its well into the 4 TFLOPs range, that's great for docked players. I don't think there's any chance handheld gets to 4 though: even if the Switch 2 has an adequate cooling solution, that much power would seriously curtail battery life.

      Eh, wouldn't count on it. They only have 400$ to work with, but really its 320 because the included dock costs 80. Its atleast going to be more powerful than the steam deck, since that thing is 2 and a half years old at this point, but i think its still going to be weaker than ps4 pro.

    That's interesting... I had heard the opposite. I only ever docked my Switch once in 8 years because the difference wasn't very large and the resolution looked fine on the small screen. 720p vs. 1080 just didn't bother me. From all the rumours of the specs I've heard Nintendo severely underclock the Switch 2 in handheld mode, probably so it can reach 2.5 - 3 hours battery life. On a Steam Deck for example, you can run the machine at full power undocked running a game like Final Fantasy Remake and it will drain the battery from full in just over an hour, It seems like Nintendo don't want to give us that option so they under power it in handheld. It's just speculation until someone gives us the full specs but "if" the leaks are true, a docked Switch 2 is massively more powerful than it is in handheld mode.

    I didn’t even consider TV mode because I rarely use my switch for TV mode. Like, 90% of the time I’m playing it in handheld mode. If it’s docked it means I’m playing Ring Fit, Splatoon, or I’m with other people playing Smash Bros. I like playing in bed, on the bus/train, on the sofa, or at table, basically I’m almost never around my TV or computer monitor, and I need my monitor to play PC games. I guess I’ve just come to appreciate the convenience of Nintendo’s handheld devices over the decades more than having to take dedicated effort to set things up on the TV. So the usage stats make sense to me.
    But I don’t see why TV mode folks would feel left out over a brief reveal when Nintendo will hash out all the technical details later.

    Tbf, real 4K is something not a lot of games achieve, no matter the console. Even on PS5 and XBSX, most games run upscaled to 4K. Even on PC, most users will use upscalers like FSR or DLSS, because they rather have a solid 60P/120fps, with "fake" 4K, than 30 or lower fps, with native 4K.
    The real question is, what DLSS is Nintendo using. DLSS 4 is looking very promising, however it is unlikely that this will be used on the Switch 2, not because the Switch 2 can't handle it, it's more so that it won't be usefull for the Switch 2. But recent patents suggest, Nintendo will use its own DLSS version, a "N(intendo)DLSS" if you will.
    In other words, it's not so much what the hardware can do, because it absolutly won't run 4K natively, it's more about what NDLSS will be cabable of.
    NDLSS could theoretical set a standard for 4K (upscaled) for TV mode. I think especially Nintendos first party games will benefit a lot from that.
    Their games are very stylized, and even if upscaled from lower resolutions, might end up with a very good upscaled 4K resolution.
    All I can say, the footage of Mario Kart 9 doesen't seem to run any type of upscaling. Either it's not planed for that particular game, which would be weird, or the game is still deep in development. It could also just be handheld footage, which simply won't use NDLSS at all, and they used the same footage on the TV, to make it more seemless in nature. After all, it's a CGI-trailer. You can't really tell what is suppose to be real.
