  • St Enoch and St Elijah Monastery community keep chickens and ducks as part of their community life. Both chickens and ducks are free range and can be seen roaming the property. They come home to roost and lay eggs in their respective grassy enclosures. Prior to the pandemic, the Lord put it on the Prior and Sister Irini's hearts to increase their number of chickens. They obeyed and were able to provide the local community with free eggs during the COVID lockdown. Last year they gave many of the chickens to families who wanted to start their own egg supply. Today, the monastery keeps about 25 chickens and the same number of ducks. The chickens provide delicious eggs for the monastery community and for the public who are more than happy to make a small donation for them. Chickens and ducks are treated as loved ones, cared for, sung to and generally appreciated. All eggs are prayed over and blessed before they are consumed or sent out to friends of the monastery and other local people who like to eat the best blessed eggs in the Hokianga!
