The variation of the first month being sometimes on Abib and sometimes on Nisan is because of their 360 day a year calander when in actuality there is 365.242. Every few years an adjustment would take place for the lost days, like this years leap year, hence February 29th was added.
It wasn't the named month per say but the "First Month" which could land on Adar or Nisan; but always on the 14th day of the first month.
The first month was always the New Moon closest to spring equinox. Spring equinox is always on March 19, 20 or 21.
It needs to be calculated this way because the First Month was when they were released from Egypt (Exodus 12:1, 2)
When Jesus celebrated the passover and instituted the memorial, the FIRST MONTH fell on Nisan which is why its always referred to as Nisan.
Jesus sacrifice was linked to the passover itself (1 Corinthians 5:7)
Dates and months and types of calanders are always a complicated mess. But keeping it super simple, the first month whether Abib or Nisan is always the closest New moon to spring equinox. The Bible clearly shows both months are referred to as "passover" or "first month" (Deuteronomy 16:1 & Esther 3:7)
If you go to the jewish calander that you saw April passover you will notice Adar 2 the 14th day will likely fall on March 24.

The confusion comes into play this year because of the realigning of the calendar.
7 times within 19 years they would have to add veadar or adar 2. However it must be done in a way to add days into the calendar without affecting the Nisan 14th passover celebration because they must keep or set aside “shomer” “the month of Aviv (abib) [springtime, i.e., Nisan],” because that is when they came out of Egypt. Therefore Nisan 14th was always 14 days after the closest new moon to the spring equinox which is constantly on March 19, 20 or 21.
A Lunar month is 29 days, 12 hours, and 44 minutes. The months were usually counted as of either 29 or 30 days, but in the Bible record the term “month” generally means 30 days.
A year of 12 lunar months falls short of a solar year of 365 1⁄4 days. Since the solar year determines the return of the seasons, there was a need to adjust the lunar calendar to this solar year usually by adding a second adar month in a way to extend the days but at the same time “keeping”, “setting aside”, “observing” or “shomer” the month of Abib [in springtime] as this is always the 1st month of the year. Spring equinox in the Julian calendar always falls on March 19, 20 & 21. So all we have to do today is go to the closest new moon to the spring equinox and count 14 days.
The Jewish calendar today is extended the days making nisan the further new moon to the spring equinox instead of the nearest new moon to the spring equinox.
