I have absolutely no doubt that Mistress Hecate Broomhead would not have got away with abusing a young Constance Hardbroom to ‘shape her future’ 😂 if the old battle axe was so cruel then why didn’t she torture the students of Cackles during her short stint as acting headmistress? It’s a shame that people sadly have to reimagine something so fun and entertaining into a disturbing thing. My own opinion of course, which I don’t expect anybody to agree with
Well, Miss Hardbroom is someone who the students are said to be afraid of and who values control a lot. However, upon hearing of Mistress Broomhead being the inspector and visiting them she is visibly afraid which happens at no other time and almost can't keep control. So considering the effect that hearing of Mistress Broomhead's arrival has on Miss Hardbroom, the audience is lead to believe Mistress Broomhead's methods are way more cruel and traumatizing.than Miss Hardbroom's. And Miss Hardbroom already does things that are not acceptable in normal schools by today's standard. (That she gives students lines to write, for example.) For these reasons, I believe, Mistress Broomhead could have abused her. However, I also feel like Broomhead is vilified just for Hardbroom's character to feel more human and likable and this can be overdone. In my opinion, Miss Hardbroom's actions and behaviours can be explained by her experiences. She is human, she is not inherently bad, she experienced bad things and she struggles. But I also believe it to be boring, if we take away that humanity from the character of Mistress Broomhead who is now the big villain. She is also human, not inherently bad, maybe experienced bad things and she also struggles probably. I also think it is fun to think about stuff like that and to share my opinion, because I love The Worst Witch, the characters and especially Miss Hardbroom. I love thinking about her bachstory and expanding my understanding of her or other characters. But no character just belongs to anyone, that is the beauty of it. No one has to believe anything that anybody else thinks about this, everyone can have their own opinions about these characters. You don't lose anything when people express their opinions or make edits that convey those opinions. They might gain something from that. I for example liked the video a lot while I imagine Miss Hardbroom's backstory differently.
Also, I think your point of Mistress Broomhead not abusing the students is a very good argument but maybe there were limits she knew she couldn't cross as the times had changed. And people also change. In the episode where she takes over the school it is shown that she is obsessed with efficiency, so maybe that could also be something to take into consideration when thinking about the way she could have treated Miss Hardbroom.
