Worth the $$? Saddle Mountain Ranch RV and Campground

  • We went to a friend's wedding and instead of renting a hotel, we decided to bring the Rockwood 2706ws with us for some Carmel by the Sea camping! We stayed at the Saddle Mountain Ranch RV and Campground, which is right next door to the Carmel by the River RV Park.
This is the most expensive campground we have ever stayed at, coming in at $130+ per night!! We have done a lot of different types of camping in California and have stayed at a lot of different California campgrounds, but I don't think we've ever spent that much.
The spots are pretty small, but I'd say this is mostly a cabin and tent camping spot, primarily. We had spot #18, which had an extra living area attached, but that is the only one long enough for our travel trailer.
They do have some nice amenities for the kids: including a nice pool area, ping pong tables, foosball, badminton, a basket ball half court, horseshoes, gazebos, fire tables, and a nice playground--so this is definitely a kid friendly campground! They also have a nice hiking trail up to the top of the mountain with nice views our over Carmel and the Carmel Valley.
We would classify this one as a good place to stay if you're looking to do some light camping in Carmel by the Sea, but really just want to explore Carmel or the Carmel Beach, be camping close to Big Sur (relatively), or other parts of Monterey rather than sitting around at camp.
This is our second time camping in Monterey--the first was at Lake San Antonio--and I don't know that we will be rushing back to this spot again. The grounds are nice, the place is clean, and they have good management, but it's super expensive and for what we're into at the moment, this is not the best campground in California. That said, compared to the price of hotels in the area, this place is still a steal at $130/night.
Even though we won't be back soon, it was good for what we needed and can still be a good option for the reasons above. We got to get out in our TT, celebrate with friends for their wedding, and make some more memories with the ones that matter most, and that's #WhyWeWork!
See you on the next adventure!

Not quite our style--what do you think? Up your alley or do you prefer the great outdoors??

It looked nice! You have a good point as far as being cheaper than any hotel in the area...hmmm but I wonder about what you could find thru VRBO? It wouldn't be my style BUT don't count my opinion because I figured out that I must be a camping snob... I don't like camping spots that are like parking lots... ie-pavement Glad it worked for you thou and yes YOUR spot looked the best!

Ya, we’re right there with you. We like the big open spots! Unfortunately the US Open was at Pebble Beach that weekend, so everything was booked up! Thanks for watching!! ❤️

We stayed there in 2014, stayed in the same site you were in but we had a 38ft 5th wheel, yes, no lie! It was quite a production and viewing event (for those watching) getting in and out of there but did it with no damage to us or anyone else lol. Looking at going back again this year 2023 with out 2022 Rockwood Ultralite 2608bs, should be a breeze after a 38ft 5th wheel. My wife thought we'd have to hire a heavy lift helicopter to lift out the 5th wheel lol.

I agree 18 is the best.... I about choked on my hotdog when you said the price... I won't stay at the KOA in Billings Montana cuz it's over $80 a night.. just down the road there's a Walmart and it's free...lol

Holly cow. $130 a night! Your site did look nice. I have rpi I pay 10 bucks for my small spot camping. I know you have an event to go to and yes I would still pay the $130 just not to stay in a hotel.

Right?! It was pretty insane... The spot was nice, just not sure it was worth the kidney I had to sell to finance the trip 😂😜

I hate hotels. Never did like them. And it was a special trip. Your next trip will be all about the adventure.

Hey guys were you there in June of 2019? We were there the same weekend I remember meeting you and talking to you about your rockwood! I had the red f250 and the rockwood roo. The pool is nice and grounds are well kept, but it’s pricey and small. I also didn’t like there’s no where for kids to ride bikes because it’s perched on top of that hill. How’s about towing your trailer up the steep hill at the entrance? Fun huh??

I hear that!!! We would never do that for just a straight-up camping trip, but it was closer to the wedding we were going to than any of the hotels and the hotels were like $350/night that weekend because the U.S. Open (golf) was in town! Probably won't be back any time soon though lol.

Agreed. If we wouldn't have had a wedding to go to and if the hotel rooms weren't like $300/night that weekend, we would have steered clear! I need to buy a campground if this is the kind of money you can charge 😜😂

@@WhyWeWork we just bit the bullet and joined Thousand Trails. 39.00 a month. Figure if we go a couple times a month, well worth it. But, back to the 130 a night, the upswing is you know your bedding is clean, lol

@@WhyWeWork there is a park not far from Pinnacles. San Benito RV Resort and one near Yosemite. It is Yosemite Lakes, and Rancho Oso. We figured if we do just those 3...2 or 3 nights each...the 1 year membership is paid. They have a 100 dollar off special for the 1 year pass. After 1 year if we don't like it, no sweat. You know most rv parks run from 40+ if decent. We will update you on our opinion. FYI, 485 for the year for California Nevada and Arizona. The last 2 states only have 1 each. But, California has alot. I chose to pay monthly and its 39.00 for the 12 months.

I'll be honest, I just don't think I'd like California camping much from what I've seen. I need my national forest tranquility and my privacy when camping.
