    One of the great experiences of my life was--just a few months ago--Dutch coming into a local indy show on which I do the booking. He sat in the back and watched the monitor with me, giving me feedback on the booking. I learned a ton that night, and you couldn't put a price on the interaction with him. Not only is Dutch a great guy (and someone you would enjoy being around in most any situation), but I felt like I was in a college classroom learning from a professor who really knew their stuff.

      Maybe if we all send it to him, he'll actually watch it and learn something. He gets so much free advice from people who actually know wtf they're talking about because they were in the business for years and it's sad and ridiculous he doesn't take advantage of it all.

    Dutch didn't sugar coat it or be harsh about it. Booking is about a working relationship with the wrestlers. Writers just told them what to do and say. On the national level, it kind of made sense how it ended up the way that it did. It kind of makes sense how WWE got how it did with writers, emphasis on the plural. Even back in the 00s, the writer wrestler conflict was a thing from what Edge has said at least.

    Roddy Piper used to say this all the time. When he was in WCW he'd go out of his way to avoid the writers. Wrestling is improv and you guys should be the ones who make it up as you go not some Hollywood eggplant.

    Can you please ask Dutch about any interaction he may have had with Gary Hart? I always thought Hart was a tremendous talent. I know he booked a lot of different territories back in the 70’s and 80’s.

    I honestly don't think TK is as bad a booker as people say. He's booked plenty of great matches and feuds in AEW. I feel like he could use some more input from other people though.

    • @vonVile
      @vonVile 2 роки тому +2

      Tony Khlown only thinks about the matches, but doesn't know how to logically get there. This is why AEW story lines build up in reverse having no DQ match first.
      When he brings in outside talent, he doesn't do anything to build them up before a PPV, so that they matter. Look what he just did with MCMG. All they did was appear at All Out to do the job. No matches on Dynamite weeks before to show how good they are to get the audience hyped.

    Not to correct the master, but there are a number of creative writing programs out there. The University of Iowa's writer's workshop, for example, can give you a master of fine art's degree. Maybe my Alma mater can offer a MFA in booking one say too.

    Dutch said in a previous episode that he hasn't talked much about his early days. Does that include his service in Vietnam?
    This is the 1st time I've heard him mention it. I only know about it through Wikipedia.

    • @zlinedavid
      @zlinedavid 2 роки тому +2

      Like a lot of Vietnam vets, it’s probably not a subject they like revisiting. War strips a piece of the soul away, and although the wound might heal, there’s always that uncomfortable scar. My dad also served in Vietnam (‘65-68 USAF), and he would only talk about things in bits and pieces. And there are bits and pieces I’m sure he took to his grave with him.
      If Dutch wants to tell that story, I’ll gladly listen. If he doesn’t, I’ll thank him for his service and for continuing to entertain us with the stories he is able to tell.

    Booking is like physical poetry. You're using the performers to tell a story. Kinda like directing a mini move.

    • @Tittymaster
      @Tittymaster Рік тому

      "Directing a mini-movie" is way more of a writer's mindset, I prefer Dutch's analogy of "a booker is the coach that picks the team".

    • @babayagaslobbedaknobba
      @babayagaslobbedaknobba Рік тому

      @@Tittymaster, I said it's "KINDA LIKE". Not EXACTLY LIKE. Yes, it's like a coach that picks the team, but he's also telling them their story, and the outcome. A coach doesn't know the outcome of a game, beforehand. A director does.

    • @Tittymaster
      @Tittymaster Рік тому

      @@babayagaslobbedaknobba A director goes by a detailed movie script, angles between pro wrestlers are (or should be..) an impromptu affair, where the booker sets a minimal framework (timeslot, purpose of a promo/match, who's heel/face, finishes) and the wrestlers use their skills and showmanship to get the audience to be emotionally invested and moved - by themselves (depending on their skills), without writers or directors sketching out an entire role for them that they have to memorize and re-enact. As Jim Cornette said: "Pro wrestlers are reactors, not actors".
      And a booker knows the match finishes, but not necessarily the actual "outcome", in the sense of how the audience's perception and reaction to a match or an interview will look like (positive or negative) and how the protagonists will be perceived from that point on.
