  • The pedestal base of an antique quarter-sawn oak table is repaired. A broken portion is epoxied back in place and open seams are closed using a variety of techniques. The repairs are color matched and top coated.

This was perfect! I have my great grandfathers dining table and it’s almost exactly the same without the damage. I does need some repair where the pedestal meets the table top, but it’s minor. The internal hardware is identical to yours. I have 12 original oak leaves and fond childhood memories of the table being used for Thanksgiving and Christmas at full length. You’ve inspired me to fix it and once again it will see more Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners!

This was super helpful thank you! We just bought a similar table from Craigslist for $100 and my dumbass accidentally broke it when I sat on it without thinking. The base came apart in the same way. I have zero experience woodworking but wanted to fix it and this was very helpful. I’ll update you once fixed. Thanks

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Our pedal base split yesterday, just one side. The other seams are intact without the slightest give. Didn't know epoxy is strong enough for the seam. Was (unsuccessfully) searching for a hex bracket or tensioner thinking I could counter sink bolts and make this thing sturdier hiding the bracket inside the pedestal. But your awesome work looks more reasonable...esp since no such bracket could be found. Thx x2

Thanks for making this video, my kiddos cracked my table and I wanted to know if and how I could fix it… it’s a solid table compared to the stuff they pass off as furniture now lol ❤️🙌

Hey Larry, absolutely love your vids and channel have been binge watching is refreshing as your vids more about real refinishing as opposed to just quick paint, chalk paint, glazing-flipping etc. great to see someone who clearly loves refinishing nice furniture have already learned a lot from you so I thank you.
Anyway have a few questions-2 projects not sure how to go about.
    1) I have a quite nice turn of century large oak side table, wobbly need to re-glue so first question is can I use hairdryer to soften up glue or do I need a heat gun. So just quick history of table I just refinished mineral spirits steel wool just mushed around original finish probably 25 years ago maybe ten years ago I tung oiled piece to freshen up. So now that I know more about refinishing as educated myself with you tube research, here is the dilemma top of table has some minimal but visible water marks. Do I need to use stripper then mineral spirits, sand to wood and then use oxalic acid to get rid black water stains-rest of piece I'm Just going to tape and paper off as is fine. So now here is problem bare wood oxalic hopefully stains gone the how to match color of rest of piece not sure how to do...any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Or do I just leave well enough alone clean up mineral spirits, re-glue, put on tung oil and finish with wax...thoughts would be appreciated**water damage is limited on top but clearly visible...Thanks.
    2) Sorry for long email second project mid century rock maple kitchen table with 3 chairs. Researching internet its hard to stain maple as tends to go on blotchy not sure how to do. Anyway very nice piece top is a mess so needs refinishing to back down to wood has sort of reddish brown stain. So would you re-stain then wipe on poly or just sand down to wood and just re-poly also note I live NYC in an apartment and can use only Water Based products due to smell and high VOC's from oil based stuff I know trust me bums me out but only way I can go. So any suggestions would be very much appreciated. I have done refinishing some in past, been carpenter in my 20's(few years)-home renovations in Boston area loved it, anyway now 61 about to be 62 retire out by 63 1/2 I'm fuckin out thank god. I've always liked wood working have done some thinking about doing refinishing/wood working (would love to have a wood shop) in retirement know I would love it I'm a bit of a tinkerer, always loved working with
wood...so we'll see. Looking forward to retirement but need to have something to do...this could be nice avenue to pursue...so anyway are you a Pennsylvania guy maybe Philly as I saw in one of your vids an Eagles jersey...Go Eagles...oh have lived about half between NYC and Boston but definitely consider myself a New England Yankee...so nice to say hello Larry I just love your stuff your very knowledgeable and enjoy watching and learning from your videos. So thank you again I'm learning a great deal from you and enjoying.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Thanks so much for providing this great video. I have a table top and pedestal that are designed to go together, but I lost the metal piece that connects them. I've called the manufacturer to see if I could get the original piece, but they can't help. Is there a way to construct another piece to connect the two?

Raised, schooled and worked in Ithaca for most of my life. I sold souvenirs at Schoellkopf field when I was a kid, milked Cornell's dairy cows, and I got my undergrad degree from Cornell. Moved away 9 years ago to settle in the south. I miss summers on Cayuga Lake and cross country skiing through the woods adjacent to the university. Good to hear from another Ithacan. Stay warm!

My grandmother had a table that had a base like that. With 5 kids she needed a big table. One of my Aunts died when I was 12-13. Her name was Nadine, now I have a niece with that name.

hello Larry! love watching your extremely instructive videos. I was recently watching the repairing an antique oak. pedestal table base. I am in the process of refinishing an antique table that has an interior spread apart table base almost identical to the one you are working on. you mention in the video that it was a mechanism patented in 1901. I am trying to establish where the table I have came from and how old it is. do you know the name of the manufacturer or furniture maker that made the base and or the mechanism?

Hi there, I have an old cylinder round table base that I just refinished, I had originally put some wood glue in a couple of cracks and then winched it tight top and bottom and let glue set, i refinished the table and now I’ve put it all together, put the top on and now see the cracks have let go again….I’m crushed! Can you suggest what I can do to fix it? And what type of glue I should use? Is there a way I can send you photos? Thanks Heather

Larry, great job! Off topic question: How do you go about removing loose wedged joints or wedged spindles? I typically use moisture and heat, but it is painstaking at times. I would like to get your perspective.

Hey Philip, Hope you’re doing well. Whenever I’ve failed at removing spindles or tenons from joints, I just cut them off at the highest point possible and insert dowels into them. I know this is very unconventional, but it’s helped me quite a bit. I do a lot of broken chair repairs, and this always helps. Also, it’s much more difficult to get away with if the back spindles on chairs, but I’ve done those the way I mentioned as well. As you know, it’s always better to keep the piece original, but sometimes those joints just don’t give, so you’re left with creative ideas to repair a piece. Hope that helps. I’m also interested in hearing what Larry has to say about it. I seen him struggle with some joints, but he usually gets them separated. Take care of yourself!
