A mix of apple, plum and pear. All on dwarf rootstock. M26. You’ve be surprised how much fruit you get when you prune each winter! 🥷🌿🤘 🍎 🍐

Hi,
I've planted some fruit trees for privacy and fruit. But height and privacy are my priority. My trees are dwarf trees and will stop growing once they hit 3-4m according to Suttons. Should I allow them to hit their mature height before I start pruning for better yields?
My bare root Victoria plum tree has added 4ft since it's initial hard prune when planted in early March 2024. It's doubled in height.
As where my dwarf bare root Apple, Cherry and Pear trees have only grown 1-2 feet in that same time period.
Hi Scotte. I’d always winter prune (apart from Cherries which always need summer only pruning after fruiting) even young trees. This will help thicken them up for privacy and give more fruit. If you let them just grow up up and up. They will be thin and quite unwieldy. So yes I’d prune every year if you can for the thickest and most dense fruit trees. Although they are all on similar root stocks each grafted fruit tree will grow at their own rate. But don’t worry they usually all catch up! I have an apple tree about 10yr old, its last pruning was after last years harvest. Currently it is having a growth spurt and is getting bigger than I want it, while showing little sign of producing any fruit buds.
Is it alright to prune it back now (end of May), to hopefully promote fruit growth, or is it just the wrong time in its year to be pruning it?

It usually gives us plenty of fruit, is it too early to be expecting to see little apples forming, only our pear tree is streets ahead with the fruiting? Thanks.
Hi Lennonesque, thanks for your question. I wouldn’t prune it now as you may prune off late fruiting spurs. I’d wait until August/Sept to do a prune which will restrict size for next year. Then a winter prune which will help promote growth in other areas! Hope that helps! Lee 🌿🥷🤘
Which summer month is the right month to prune a 2years old apricot tree? Same question for a 2 years old sweet cherry tree?
Hi Ezeee. The best time to prune a cherry is after fruiting. For the apricot you really want to carry out any pruning in April here in the UK. Then as a summer prune if needed directly after fruiting in summer. Happy gardening! Lee 🥷🌿🤘

Gixer750pilot I’d make a start now if I were you as Cherry trees are really susceptible to silver leaf disease if pruned too late in the year which can kill them. If you take out some of the oldest branches first. Keep standing back and ensuring it’s got a open shape and nothings too close or rubbing you can’t go too wrong. Hope that helps! Happy Gardening.
Garden Ninja Ltd that’s a top tip thanks mate I’ve already left it till December to prune . These cherry trees are purely ornamental and not there to produce fruit, I just want a tight tidy tree where they both match and not too big . I don’t want them spreading but I’m worried they will spread outwards or o may do them harm .

I have a 10yr old breaburn type apple tree, it's heavy with fruit with branches bending ,almost to breaking, can I now end of September prune off leafy growth

In this video it looks like you have pruned before flowering, is this correct?. Can the new growth be pruned about the back end of july when the plums are formed.

Hi Pamela. Sorry for the delay. I thought I’d replied but clearly got distracted. So summer pruning is to reduce growth. I prune back to a flower so you don’t lose the fruit. Then after fruiting you can continue back to the back of that stem. Ideally wait until it’s fruited then it’s easier to formative prune without losing that seasons crop. Hope that helps. Lee 🥷🌿
