At the beginning it is like what I call a slash chord for example C / D and then it is like the upper structure chord like the left hand pressing C7 and the right hand pressing A. Could you please explain the difference between a slash chord, upper structure chord and super impose chord. Thank you !

Two and a half years later and this is still by far the best jazz lesson I've ever seen. I am constantly dumbfounded and amazed at not only just how in-depth you get with these videos, but also at the same time how practical you make your explanations for all these ADVANCED concepts. I started viewing as many of your videos as I could about three and a half years ago and even though at the time 75 to 80% of them were way over my head, just always aspired to get to that level of understanding where I can grasp even the most advanced of topics. I think I finally got it in my ear. But of course now I have to actually train my fingers to get as fast as my brain. Much kudos, my friend for making this possible. Please never stop teaching. Mr Hewitt, please never stop teaching ?! I play guitar since forever, and thoroughly enjoy all your videos. This latest video is a such true shortcut to altered extensions, explaining a simple device in Lehmann's terms. Regardless of one's theory prowess this simple formula will save hours of thinking and experimenting, and it is a great tool for mastering the impro, you don't want to be thinking where is what when soloing.
That's the idea I had...which I think is one way of seeing it, and is clever. You eventually have to know where those intervals are, sort of automatic. Thanks!

25 years ago I discovered the G maj triad over a Bb7 (13b9) - loved the sound - tried it out as a E maj triad over G7 and so on, and then, experimenting with triads over C7 found as well as A maj, Gb maj and Eb maj, (and of course C maj) and noticed the relationship of these four: the roots form a C diminished. I am still fascinated by these! The tritone sub is in there with Gb, along with its VI, Eb. Then last week or so I find Barry Harris teaching the same stuff, and now you, Kent! Like Bill Evans once said, it’s really better if you discover stuff for yourself. Being shown stuff is good too, but it feeds your curiosity, finding it yourself. By the way, I too prefer the first inversion of these triads. Thanks, mate!!
You'd be surprised at what you can find out for yourself. Bill Evans doesn't sound like anyone else, he has his own unique chordal sense, and everything else. To be able to even hear and conceive of what he does is so remarkable to me.
This is awesome - I had figured out messing around that I could get 11ths and 13ths by playing triads a tone above or below the chord....but this is much more detailed and there's a ton of useful drills I can build around this. Your teaching method is superb and really well paced
Brilliant lesson, was using the 'up a whole step' trick for a C13#11 for awhile now and knew there was other triads to throw in the right hand to add those tensions. Now I need to memorize these! Thanks again.

These polychords bring out some wonderful harmonies and tensions and a great improvement on standard triads and 7ths etc . The scales built on these chords add tremendous interest. And have always been drawn to the richness of the piano. A friend of mine passed away and left me his Yamaha Pf15. I started duplicating on the piano what I could do on the guitar. Messing around with chord voicings, inversions, chromatic chord sequences, some finger exercises, as well as trying to play some jazz standards. It's so cool on the piano because of how you can space, and arrange your pieces ... to be individually personal. Seems like you can develop your own style using this approach. I'm no virtuoso by any stretch of the imagination, but since I seen your videos... "I solemnly swear to dedicate all the time I can to learn, develop and perform the richest most exotic sophisticatedly beautiful music that I can". Thanks to you my friend. Great stuff Kent - thank you! Got such a lot from this. I'm still learning the sax via the piano, but this concept is so immediate, it's leaking into the sax already! I spent about 3 hours yesterday just playing Dm,G7,C mucking about with these superimposition ideas. I went into the studio today for a pop gig - they wanted "wild" - so I slapped some of these "outside" ideas into it. So many new colours! Thanks again.

Wow. I was searching for something else in jazz and found this, and this expanded my understanding so much. Thinking about jazz chords as stacked basic triads instead of extended chords really changed how I see everything now

Hey Kent, just came across your videos and I have to admit that they make jazz theory as simple as it should be. Your concept of superimposition reminds me on the "upper structures" from the jazz piano book by Mark Levine. (I guess you know it ;-) Only difference: as he explains the chords as rootless voicings built from tritones + triads I never could remember which structure meant which alteration. To start from the root gives a better orientation and makes it way easier for me to quickly find the position for the right hand. If you combine these two concepts you have a powerful tool get closer to a more personal sound. Keep it up ;-)

I Kent I got the play Oh Happy Day by Ramsey Lewis before Sunday when he go 2 B diminished and take it down in half steps soloing in the right hand right there's where I get lost
Who'da thunk it? that diatonic ii ,V7 by putting 7th in bass to 3rd in bass of tonic thereby getting chromatic bass . If it'd been a snake :-) then the Petrushka polychord... so auxiliary diminished is still the parent scale there? 1/2 step, whole. So watching your fingers rt.H (no) seems to be the answer. Cool . I can see you ain't really thinking chord scales so much huh? Very cool lesson! Gonna watch again .So I just wanted to say that there are a set of chromatically altered chords that can be thought of as belonging to the melodic minor scale as derived from its degrees . Much of this approach(probably all at some point) overlaps with your stuff. But a different approach to the same thing is most enlightening and almost always yields a different kind of line .
Thank you for this lesson, I was just introducing this topic to my students... I only miss the b9 13 lick, in your example you played D over C7 instead of A over C7. Proves you're human after all...
On the sheet on my website I wrote the lick correctly , but looks like I made a mistake when playing it. Sorry about that....I can't re-do the whole video to correct it now...but thanks for catching it.
I just found your channel, Ken, and I'm thoroughly enjoying myself. it's a nice change to have an educational music channel that doesn't treats the viewers like morons but gets to the interesting stuff in a organized but fast way. this video needs to be commented because I've used super imposed scales and chords for a while now but really not knowing that I did; just found it to be a funky and easy way to get interesting sounds into my improvisation. thanks for all these videos to dive deeper into the theory behind my favorite music!

I've been studying this Kent and I'm glad you see no problem with this technique, as some people think it's not a good idea and lacks rigour in thinking about harmony. It's another approach and far from being an "easy" way to find chords I think it helps you remember the colour tones. Have you done a video on applying the principle to major and minor chords and modes (I don't see one)? The ones I stumbled across which are particularly useful are Major 9 e.g. G/CM7 and Major 13,#11 e.g. D/CM7 ( Lydian sound). I also like minor 11 e.g. Bb/Cm7 (Dorian sound) and of course there are others.
I just did one on applying this technique to a minor 9 (11) chord. Your's is a good suggestion, I'll start planning.that. We're heading for NC on our usual trek every year so I'll be away from this for a while. Thanks for your suggestion.

And have always been drawn to the richness of the piano. A friend of mine passed away and left me his Yamaha Pf15. I started duplicating on the piano what I could do on the guitar. Messing around with chord voicings, inversions, chromatic chord sequences, some finger exercises, as well as trying to play some jazz standards. It's so cool on the piano because of how you can space, and arrange your pieces ... to be individually personal. Seems like you can develop your own style using this approach. I'm no virtuoso by any stretch of the imagination, but since I seen your videos... "I solemnly swear to dedicate all the time I can to learn, develop and perform the richest most exotic sophisticatedly beautiful music that I can". Thanks to you my friend. If I could I would send you some Prime rib, Lobster, Caesar salad, Texas toast, and a 1985 bottle of Rothschild Lafite. Thank you so much... Greatly appreciated!!!

Great stuff Kent - thank you! Got such a lot from this. I'm still learning the sax via the piano, but this concept is so immediate, it's leaking into the sax already! I spent about 3 hours yesterday just playing Dm,G7,C mucking about with these superimposition ideas. I went into the studio today for a pop gig - they wanted "wild" - so I slapped some of these "outside" ideas into it. So many new colours! Thanks again.

You are an excellent teach, Teach! I can hear it all, and sound it out easily, but damned if I know what it's all called. Wish we had a common-name for each alt. Perhaps, as you suggest, we could name each one after a jazz great like Monk or Herbie Hancock. "Bb-Monk". Awesome!
You"re right, David, there should be a simpler way to call it rather than C dominant 9th with added sharp 11 and 13.
Wow. I was searching for something else in jazz and found this, and this expanded my understanding so much. Thinking about jazz chords as stacked basic triads instead of extended chords really changed how I see everything now
It's another way of looking at upper extensions, and effective when modulating to other keys or tonal centers. Thanks for the comment!

Hey Kent, just came across your videos and I have to admit that they make jazz theory as simple as it should be. Your concept of superimposition reminds me on the "upper structures" from the jazz piano book by Mark Levine. (I guess you know it ;-) Only difference: as he explains the chords as rootless voicings built from tritones + triads I never could remember which structure meant which alteration. To start from the root gives a better orientation and makes it way easier for me to quickly find the position for the right hand. If you combine these two concepts you have a powerful tool get closer to a more personal sound. Keep it up ;-)

Who'da thunk it? that diatonic ii ,V7 by putting 7th in bass to 3rd in bass of tonic thereby getting chromatic bass . If it'd been a snake :-) then the Petrushka polychord... so auxiliary diminished is still the parent scale there? 1/2 step, whole. So watching your fingers rt.H (no) seems to be the answer. Cool . I can see you ain't really thinking chord scales so much huh? Very cool lesson! Gonna watch again .So I just wanted to say that there are a set of chromatically altered chords that can be thought of as belonging to the melodic minor scale as derived from its degrees . Much of this approach(probably all at some point) overlaps with your stuff. But a different approach to the same thing is most enlightening and almost always yields a different kind of line .
Thank you for this lesson, I was just introducing this topic to my students... I only miss the b9 13 lick, in your example you played D over C7 instead of A over C7. Proves you're human after all...
On the sheet on my website I wrote the lick correctly , but looks like I made a mistake when playing it. Sorry about that....I can't re-do the whole video to correct it now...but thanks for catching it.
I just found your channel, Ken, and I'm thoroughly enjoying myself. it's a nice change to have an educational music channel that doesn't treats the viewers like morons but gets to the interesting stuff in a organized but fast way.
this video needs to be commented because I've used super imposed scales and chords for a while now but really not knowing that I did; just found it to be a funky and easy way to get interesting sounds into my improvisation.

I've been studying this Kent and I'm glad you see no problem with this technique, as some people think it's not a good idea and lacks rigour in thinking about harmony. It's another approach and far from being an "easy" way to find chords I think it helps you remember the colour tones. Have you done a video on applying the principle to major and minor chords and modes (I don't see one)? The ones I stumbled across which are particularly useful are Major 9 e.g. G/CM7 and Major 13,#11 e.g. D/CM7 ( Lydian sound). I also like minor 11 e.g. Bb/Cm7 (Dorian sound) and of course there are others.
I just did one on applying this technique to a minor 9 (11) chord. Your's is a good suggestion, I'll start planning.that. We're heading for NC on our usual trek every year so I'll be away from this for a while. Thanks for your suggestion.
