Basara is incredible, I remember being so hooked that I obsessed over trying to watch the stageplays, it was either import the expensive dvds or jump through hoops to rent the HD version on dmm. I did the latter. It follows the manga closely, so I never felt too lost. While recommending the stageplays is a bit much, I'd still check out key scenes from it, like Shido's uh, moment during the earthquake, Chacha's duel, or anything with Shuri and Sarasa together.
Absolutely love Basara! I also love Berserk! Now Basara did fill in what I do wish was in Berserk, if I could only smash the two together. Oh well. I love them both equally. ☺️
I LOVED Run Away with Me Girl. It is heartbreaking and feels real and authentic. If you are looking for another lesbian romance exploring similar themes you might like Even Though We're Adults. It is about a married woman who begins an affair with an out lesbian she meets at a bar.
Thanks for talking about Kageki Shoujo!! It was my favorite show in the season it aired (the manga is great as well). A small addition for anyone interested in reading the manga. It is split into two "series". "The Curtain Rises", which is essentially volume 0, and then the normal series starting with volume 1. This is due to switching magazines: It started in a seinen (!) magazine and switched to a josei one!
When I read of Berserk, I knew I would like this video because I have my good fair shares of complaints and I knew Shoujo would answer them quite well. I am very happy with a recommendation for Oshi no Ko as well, as the series also has issues but I love it for it's depiction of entertainment industry and it pursued me to get into it myself. I joined the Patreon too for the lovely early access and support to the Shoujo and Chihayafuru connoisseur :3
I was thinking about how Glass Mask was similar to Oshi no Ko, since both series have similar art styles (especially on the starry eyes) and focus on the entertainment industry (both theatre and movie acting). But Kageki Shoujo is a great choice.
unfortunately glass mask isnt licensed in english so colleen cant recommend it. the author even came out & said that she's dissapointed its popular overseas (since the only way it could be, is if people read it illegally)

Basara x Berserk was so on point!! Basara has a rape scene that crushed me way more then Berserk's famous caska scene. Cuz it wasn't written in a weird way. It was sad, dangerous and frustrating in a way Berserk never achieved with that scene.
I don't think the recommendations themselves would change since I love all these series still but I would be recommending a lot more of the ones I really want to be telling people about 😅

17:17 You know, this premise reminds me a lot more of " The Duke of Death and His Black Maid ", a lot actually, it's also about people who have been cursed and also about the romance between a noble cursed with death touch (if he touches you you die) and his maid, though in that they have a "Pushing Daisies" thing going on cause he can't touch her, it's more a really weird romantic comedy with some very dark depressing themes and supernatural shenanigans, good solid stuff. It ended past year, but the author still releases these extra mini arcs, it's awesome.

I've been really enjoying Yona of the Dawn and Requiem of the Rose King, and some other bits and pieces. Run Away With Me Girl/Kakeocchi Gyaru is a good one. If y'all like that one Even Though We're Adults/Otona ni Nattemo is another good one in a similar vein.
@@Anarchivist343 There's Suimitsutou Ha Shoujo Ni Kajirareru which is one half those and one half My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness. Also if you want to go outside of manga there's the manhua Mojito & to a lesser extent Soulmate. That said Onna x Onna/Onna Doushi manga rarely get translated in favor of Yuri manga, unfortunately.

What a fun video! A series I’ve been loving lately is correspondence from the end of the universe, it’s only got two volumes out in English but I’ve been really loving the story. I just finished reading Basara because I wanted to pump myself up for when do not say mystery comes out at the end of the month! Needless to say I underestimated basara it was sooooo good
It didn't cost me an arm or leg to buy physical copies of Basara. At best over $300. This amazing manga is worth that much. It's a shame we will never get a reboot (fullmetal alchemist brotherhood treatment) of this series.

As someone who doesn't really like shounen and is more familiar with shoujo anime than manga, I really appreciate this video for very different reasons than you'd expect lol. I don't want to watch the super popular shounen manga's listed in this video because I think i'd just prefer them if they had a more shoujo vibe, so I love that I can get exactly that from your recs.

I actually love you chose to recommend Run Away with me Girl for Blue Flag - my first reaction would have been to suggest My Love Mix Up due to the somewhat similar premise but I think RAWMG has a lot closer mood or approach to the situation ❤
Agreed, I thought I might do My Love Mixup as I have previously when I did this series but since RAWMG was getting physicals and ending this month I knew it had to be that one.

Been recently devouring Zankoku na Kami ha Shigai Suru and it's been a very interesting read, but I was curious if you've read it.

Ohh I recently finished reading Berserk, I'm defo gonna check out Basara next! Thanks for the rec! This series is such an awesome idea Colleen. I love shoujo but I tend to get swept up by the big shounen/seinen titles whilst missing out on shoujo/jousei gems.
I am currently reading Basara for the first time (man it needs a reprint in English!!) and Love of Kill and love both. Basara and another fantasy title From Far Away were recommended by friends of mine and while late I am glad I am discovering them now. Love of Kill is fun and the volumes are quick reads as it was a webseries originally (if I remember correctly).
Thanks to this video I decided to check out Run Away With Me Girl, and I really enjoyed it! It's a short but really sweet read with great art. Will have to check out all the other series listed one day.
What you described of the plot of Run Away With Me Girl sounded so much like The Ends of a Dream by Yumi Sudo except I assume it's not as sad. Will definitely check it out
Nice as a new subscriber who has frieren as my 3rd favorite manga I was glad to see a comparison. Although I already started the cursed princes servents it was nice seeing it nonetheless. Another shounen I feel like it is similar to is The duke of death and his maid but that one is less popular so it probably wouldn't fit this series. It has the same concept of the male lead with a death touch and the female lead assisting them. Anyways love the series and hope to see more in the future!
The Duke of Death manga was actually one I considered doing for this rec but as you said it just didn't fit as well being a lesser popular title. Gotta use that upcoming Frieren anime y'know haha

Another suggestion for Oshi no Ko would be Not Your Idol which is a phenomenal series but I didn't use it because it's been on hiatus for about a year now 😭

I personally think they are similar because they're both iyashikei and have that soothing calming vibe. And they both have a main character that can see things others can't, and they have to deal with them on a daily basis. What do you think? Are they similar?
I’d love some recs for things that are similar to Inio Asano’s work. I like that most are kinda surrealistic and very character based takes on drama series.

Is Sarasa the main character of the kageki shoujo manga? When I watched the anime I thought Ai was the main character because we followed her more from the start 🤔 that's interesting. Wait, you are talking about shounen. But Berserk is Seinen? Okay, while I was writing it, you have mentioned Seinen. Just had a dissonance reading a title and looking at a thumbnail.
"Making the Shonen Jump to Shojou" is just a clever and concise title, Colleen explains its for both shoujo and josei equivalents for both shonen and seinen series!
luckily those stories are from the prequel and not the current run of the series, I'm 3 volumes in and it focuses much more on the character's motivations and goals rather than lots of trauma if that helps you at all
Love of Kill's female MC is named Chateau Dankworth and I just can't take that seriously. Really couldn't think of anything else? Smith would've been better

Considering Berserk is inspired by Shojo (Griffin is a pretty boy in the vein of The Poe Clan) this is a inspired choice.

This series is such an awesome idea Colleen. I love shoujo but I tend to get swept up by the big shounen/seinen titles whilst missing out on shoujo/jousei gems.

I am currently reading Basara for the first time (man it needs a reprint in English!!) and Love of Kill and love both. Basara and another fantasy title From Far Away were recommended by friends of mine and while late I am glad I am discovering them now. Love of Kill is fun and the volumes are quick reads as it was a webseries originally (if I remember correctly).
Yeah I think Love of Kill started on Pixiv but it did end up in the shoujo/josei magazine Comic Gene at some point!

I got the physical version of the Basara manga as it came out (having been introduced by the short lived anime), I really should re-read it sometime.
Thanks to this video I decided to check out Run Away With Me Girl, and I really enjoyed it! It's a short but really sweet read with great art. Will have to check out all the other series listed one day.
What you described of the plot of Run Away With Me Girl sounded so much like The Ends of a Dream by Yumi Sudo except I assume it's not as sad. Will definitely check it out

Nice as a new subscriber who has frieren as my 3rd favorite manga I was glad to see a comparison. Although I already started the cursed princes servents it was nice seeing it nonetheless. Another shounen I feel like it is similar to is The duke of death and his maid but that one is less popular so it probably wouldn't fit this series. It has the same concept of the male lead with a death touch and the female lead assisting them. Anyways love the series and hope to see more in the future!
The Duke of Death manga was actually one I considered doing for this rec but as you said it just didn't fit as well being a lesser popular title. Gotta use that upcoming Frieren anime y'know haha

Another suggestion for Oshi no Ko would be Not Your Idol which is a phenomenal series but I didn't use it because it's been on hiatus for about a year now 😭

the more you talk about basara, the more i need to read it ToT also the second I saw Kageki Shojo!! YYEEEEESSSSSSS it's really good & bought all the books right away! If you like Skip Beat, it has a similar feel!

Thank you for the recommendations! I'm definetely going to check out those shoujo fantasy series. I love shoujo fantasy's. Here's a recommendation for you. Mushishi and Natsume's book of friends. I personally think they are similar because they're both iyashikei and have that soothing calming vibe. And they both have a main character that can see things others can't, and they have to deal with them on a daily basis. What do you think? Are they similar?
I’d love some recs for things that are similar to Inio Asano’s work. I like that most are kinda surrealistic and very character based takes on drama series.

Is Sarasa the main character of the kageki shoujo manga? When I watched the anime I thought Ai was the main character because we followed her more from the start 🤔 that's interesting. I enjoyed the run away with your girl manga!! It's short but really good!! Love of kill looks really exciting I've been wanting to read spy series that focuses on the spying in a darker tone
(Also I've never heard Scorsese pronounced like that 😅)
Sarasa is more the main protagonist where the shoujo run of the series picks up but like you said Ai is more the protagonist in the prequel

Okay, while I was writing it, you have mentioned Seinen. Just had a dissonance reading a title and looking at a thumbnail.
"Making the Shonen Jump to Shojou" is just a clever and concise title, Colleen explains its for both shoujo and josei equivalents for both shonen and seinen series!
I still have to read Kageki Shojou(and chihayafuru) but the anime destroyed me around episode 3 or 4 with one of the backstories.
luckily those stories are from the prequel and not the current run of the series, I'm 3 volumes in and it focuses much more on the character's motivations and goals rather than lots of trauma if that helps you at all
