Chrono Cross is a divisive game. It's the first RPG I abandoned. Got to a point where I could not progress the game no matter where I went or what I did. That, and its whole system of combat, Elements, leveling, etc. is too much of a departure from Chrono Trigger's streamlined excellence. I did like tracking down all the unique party members, though. And, from my understanding, it does end up having an interesting story. A shame I couldn't get to most of it. What were we talking about? Oh, right. Everyone agrees that CC has gorgeous music! Super relaxing choice to play on your harp. (I didn't know there were crickets underwater.) Equip yourself with a Snow Muffler and Horseshoes, and those jellyfish won't be any bother.
If I may ask a dumb question, how come you couldn't progress? Did you use a guide, or was this in the Days of Yore before Google? Ugh those damn crickets. I hate them. I've considered trying this special software to try and eliminate the background noise but it's expensive and I don't feel like spending brain power on it. The crickets should shut up in the next few weeks anyway. I have noticed a lot of listeners seem to like their ambience anyway so it's probably not worth the effort to get rid of them lol
@@HarpsiboredI really loved the crickets with this, actually! Coupled with the pitch black background, it completes the relaxing ambience. I genuinely wondered for a second if you were performing outside at night, haha! All good work on your part. Answering your question is a bit involved. Comment to follow...
@@HarpsiboredChrono Cross came out in Aug 2000. Chrono Trigger was my favorite game of all, so I was excited to get its 'sequel'. Target was the only place I could go to buy new games; I frequented a couple shops for pre-owned. I didn't see a CC guidebook anywhere I went: because I certainly would have bought it, too. And I had no Internet back then. After over 20 years, it's hard to describe what happened, especially since I couldn't understand at the time what the game expected of me. I think the next objective had been stated; but the path there was something I could NOT find! I explored or revisited every place that I had access to, but nothing new happened, nor did I find any clue what to do!! What was I missing!?!? Here's the thing. It was around this same time that I had *completely* explored, mastered, and enjoyed my friend's Super Famicom copy of Final Fantasy V. Without a guide, without me able to read a single word of Japanese! If I was capable of that, it felt like absolute bullshit that I was going in circles in CC, not able to advance! Plus, because all of CC's game mechanics threw out everything that worked in CT, I was thoroughly fed up and disappointed! It's a "me thing", I'm sure: I was already a couple years into adulthood, with my lifelong depression and cognitive impairments really starting to drag me down. CC was another middle finger proving I couldn't be at my fullest.
Thank you! Yup, Valhalla Room! I made it heavier than usual because I felt like it added to that...underwater atmosphere, if it makes sense. Interestingly, I've tried other versions of Valhalla (Vintage, Shimmer, etc.) and I always just keep going back to Room lol
i for one think jellyfish are cool and cute. kinda like octopuses (octopi?) and squid and spiders. i've also never played chrono cross, always wanted to cuz chrono trigger was so amazing but this song was nice and relaxing. also wild horses have evolved tough hooves to protect them from galloping over rough terrain all their lives. domesticated horses have had some of their toughness bred out of them over the millenia resulting in the need for protection from the rigors of hauling people and goods and fighting battles. the horseshoe is traditionally made of iron and nailed through a part of the horse hoof which sounds barbaric but that part of the hoof is pretty much the anatomical equivalent of a horse toenail
So I think live jellyfish are really beautiful (like, seeing them in an aquarium is super ethereal) but they just look like floating eyeballs in photos hahaha. Thank you for listening! And thank you for dignifying my inane question with a serious response. It was a Billy Madison reference, but quite frankly, I needed to learn about horse toenails anyway.
Fantastic arrangement of Jellyfish Sea (also my preferred name for the track). Horse shoes are obviously there to keep horse feet from getting horse hurt; additionally, there are horse socks! They're used to keep horse legs from getting horse cold. I am most definitely listening to you. As for Chrono Cross and completionist brain overload...does it help if I say characters can be mutually exclusive and you cannot get all 45 in one playthrough, no matter what you do? No? That only makes it worse? Also, the cast of Final Fantasy VI is only 14 characters, not a super huge deal! I can even name them all off the top of my head! Terra, Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Celes, Cyan, Gao, Mog, Setzer, Strago, Relm, Shadow, Umaro, and Gogo!
YOU HAVE TO PLAY IT MULTIPLE TIMES TO GET ALL 45?!?!? UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Jk maybe I should try playing it without a guide so that I won't 100% it anyway. Idk I'll think about it. It's nice that it's been released on the Switch, so I can play it on the go! Have some business travel coming up so that'll definitely help. And yes naming all 14 characters in FFVI just brings me back to the trauma of constantly switching good equipment back and forth in the final dungeon, because I gave up on getting enough to fully equip everyone. Too much work lol. If I had it my way I'd solo that whole damn game with Mog and Dragoon Boots. That adorable little creature will leave nothing but destruction in his wake.
@@Harpsibored No, no, no, I think I didn't phrase it correctly. I mean you *can never get all 45 characters at the same time*. Since some are mutually exclusive, you can get a portion. To experience all 45 characters, you have to play multiple times, but that never gets you a roster with all 45. Also, Mog is adorable, but he still has nothing on my man Sabin with dual claws, Genji Gloves, and Offering.
Well I don't know if I wanna be responsible for a lack of road rage. Some horrible slow drivers in the left lane deserve my rage!!!!!!!! Jk, thank you so much, glad to hear the music is soothing 💙
Ah, Chrono Cross. Always a good well of music when you want a break from FF. I'm sure Dreams of the Shore of Another World would also sound amazing in your hands. I admit, I would also like to hear the boss theme (I think it's called Brink of Death?), but I get that that would be a much bigger challenge.
Thank you! Yeah there's a TON in the CC OST I'd love to cover, my other 2 favorites being Bend of Time and Garden of the Gods. Not sure about the boss theme on the harp hahaahaha. That is a challenge for another lifetime 🤣
@@Harpsibored I understand. The harp lends itself more naturally to the slow, lyrical pieces. Although I've re-listened to your Vamo Alla Flamenco a couple of times the other day and it's still glorious. As it happens, I've been to a piano recital two days ago, and it made me want to tickle the old ivories again =) It was funny, I'd just watched your Q&A video from about a year ago that day, where you were asked what your favorite classical composition was, and you complained that it's hard to tell, because they usually don't have proper names, it's just "Andante in C moll" or something. And then all the names in the recital's programme were exactly this XD. I would add a second complaint myself - the old masters often didn't know when to end. You listen to the virtuoso's fingers conjure up insane trills and melodies, the he plays two dramatic chords that very much sound like the end of the piece, but after a second, he continues playing, and combined with the first problem, I'm left confused. "Okay, did that piece end and this is the start of the next one, or is another movement that's still part of the first one? Ludwig, PUH-LEEEASE!" =) My other thought, leaving the venue, was "There's more composers in the world than the same dozen or so dead guys from the 17/18 hundreds. Get some Michiru Yamane-sensei in there, maestro!" =P
Yeah you can't even get all the characters on one playthrough so don't even try it if the completionist in you is scared lol. I was never big on Cross anyway, its one of those PSX era JRPGs where they started trying to get way more amibitious but sacrificed a lot of the character writing that made the SNES games good. I tried with Cross numerous times but it hit points where the grind just overcame my interest in the story.
Good to know, thanks! Yeah since there is a Switch remaster I decided to go ahead and give it a try. Downloaded it on my Switch last night. Whether I like it...we shall see 🪼❤️

If you get around to it, play it through one day. It aged beautifully.
Lovely! Is that Valhalla reverb I hear?
I did not think this would sound so close. I thought it was supposed to use a guitar but I guess it is a harp song.
Underwater music and harps are like peas and carrots
UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Jk maybe I should try playing it without a guide so that I won't 100% it anyway.
Ahora entiendo el porque los ángeles el instrumento que tocan es el arpa
I sleep like a god damn baby + no road rage on the way to work thanks to this beautiful rendition of a classic.
Magnificent.
Well I don't know if I wanna be responsible for a lack of road rage. Some horrible slow drivers in the left lane deserve my rage!!!!!!!!
Jk, thank you so much, glad to hear the music is soothing 💙
Finish eyes on me.
Go talk to a wall
@@Harpsibored What's with the attitude?
@@nickbrown3571 Childhood abandonment issues, an imminent sorceress war and hot dog shortages.
@@Harpsibored Aren't there times when you want to share your music with someone?
@@Harpsibored I feel a draft on my butt
As it happens, I've been to a piano recital two days ago, and it made me want to tickle the old ivories again =)
It was funny, I'd just watched your Q&A video from about a year ago that day, where you were asked what your favorite classical composition was, and you complained that it's hard to tell, because they usually don't have proper names, it's just "Andante in C moll" or something.
Ludwig, PUH-LEEEASE!" =)
My other thought, leaving the venue, was "There's more composers in the world than the same dozen or so dead guys from the 17/18 hundreds.
