I've always been curious whether polygyny and polyandry (both present in ancient China) were a problem back then. I feel like many of us (including myself and the author of this book) are heavily influenced by modern idea of monogamous relationship, such that we are unable to comprehend polygamy.

This relationship wasn't toxic because the emperor had too many wives. It was because he only cared about himself and had no moral compass to speak of. Although I think in ancient China, there is no doubt that women were seen as property. It is why polygyny was a thing. Having many wives was a sign that you were a good provider, that you could afford to have many dependents.

He was emperor. He always educated by other that emperor was above other, so admitted his mistake is big no no. He was wrong, of course, but he was product of his era and surrounding. We can't completely blamed him. Just made this lesson for us.
