My mother was the Chief Weights Engineer for DeHavilland Canada until 1993. I remember open houses as a kid with tours of the engineering offices and production facilities and watching the test pilots demonstrate STOL capabilities for the crowds. My mom worked in a largely CAD CAM free mode and in the early days it was all slide rules, mechanical desktop calculators and blueprints. I was always impressed by the fact that these machines were hand made from the drawings to fabrication.
Great video! Such a shame the RCAF couldn’t delay the retirement of the -5 a bit ;) a stop at Downsview on the way to CFB Trenton for its own retirement would have been very memorable.

cool vid Ernest! however, i thought that downsview was permanently closed to all traffic? i know that the museum has since closed and the avro arrow was inside, (can't remember the new location). it's been ages since i've gone to downsview (hence the museum note). interesting how they probably still use it in case of an emergency landing that an aircraft cannot arrive to pearson safely. just an educated guess since i really have no idea. let's grab some lunch and beers at Zet's one day! hahaha! would be great to meet you in person. cheers for now and see you in the next vid. also, first again! :-)
Thanks! Downsview is not officially closed yet, the airport is still operational with Bombardier as their only tenant right now. It does plan to close down at the end of 2023 from what I’ve heard. I’ll hold you to that Zets offer ;)
Ernest this is a sad day, but a day to rejoice for a new location at Pearson. My uncle was in the liaison and modifications design branch at this plant for 14 years, then he taught high school for the Etobicoke Board of Education as a mechanical drafting teacher. He worked through the time of the Vietnam War for DH, did some design work on the space arm, and designed a machine to throw birds at flight glass at five hundred miles an hour to seen if the glass would break for a company in California. Ultimately he became an interior design specialist. He designed four planes for the Shah of Iran and his heirium of women. The interior was loved by the guy. He never did take the job but was offered to continue his interior design work at Airbus industries. Too bad the was so good even back in the late 1960's.He was at DH to see the Comet fly in with Douglas Barder, he had lunch and toured the plant and was home in London England for dinner. What a day this is in avaition history Ernest. Have a great week and God Bless mate!

Is DHC opening a facility at Pearson? I read that they want to move operations to a completely new airport outside of Calgary. It's currently in the planning phase.
@@Michael60634 Mike DHC are in fact moving out to the Calgary area at a new site. Alex Praglowski has move detailed information at his UA-cam channel just recently. Bombarier are moving to the southwest end of Pearson just the other side of where Bramalea Road comes to the security fence at Pearson. I read sometime ago the new Hanger is one million square feet. They hope to make one hundred Global Express jet per year at the new location. I hope this helps you. God Bless you Michael.
I worked at de Habilland in the Data Centre from '76 until '94 when some Argentinian born university grad ruined my life and all in his software dept he was fired six months later , that was the beginning of the end , the engineering dept saw themselves as gods , poor business decisions were rampent , the higher management should have been let go not the workers , the union was asking for reidiculous things , sigh , a historical legend was destroyed in the end .... :>P
