- Skrillex posted this video on his Twitter, because artist Casey Deinel also known as Winter Hinterland is suing Justin Bieber for copying the vocal riff from her song "Ring The Bell".

"As many of you that follow my career and work have already recognized, Justin Bieber’s song “Sorry” copies the vocal riff prominently featured in my song “Ring the Bell.” The writers, producers, and performers of “Sorry” did not obtain a license for this exploitation of my work, nor did they obtain or seek my permission. Yesterday afternoon, I filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement against Justin Bieber and the other responsible parties.
After this post, I intend to leave the subject matter of the lawsuit in the hands of my lawyers and the legal system. However, because I do not take the act of suing lightly, I want to take this opportunity to briefly explain my decision to those of you who are connected to me through family, friendship, and music.
Creating original and unique music is my life’s passion, but it is challenging and time consuming. I poured my blood, sweat, and tears into writing and producing “Ring the Bell,” and I am proud of the finished product, which Rolling Stone listed as one of its “favorite songs, albums, and videos.” Throughout my career, I have worked very hard to preserve my independence and creative control, thus it came as a shock to hear my work used and exploited without permission.
Like most artists that sample music, Bieber could have licensed my song for use in “Sorry.” But he chose not to contact me. After the release of “Sorry,” my lawyers sent Bieber a letter regarding the infringement, but Bieber’s team again chose to ignore me. I offered Bieber’s team an opportunity to have a private dialogue about the infringement, but they refused to even acknowledge my claim, despite the obviousness of the sample. Justin Bieber is the world’s biggest artist, and I’m sure that he and his team will launch a full attack against me. But, in the end, I was left with no other option. I believe I have an obligation to stand up for my music and art.
Thank you in advance for your support.

For everyone that is confused. The sample in this video is taken from Julia Micheals, not Winter Hinterland
Julia Michael is one hell of a good song writer. I have great respect for her.
Dude this is.COMPLETE proof that they didn't steal sorry that lady just wanted exposure on social media
yes you are right
No she didnt. If you listen to the song she said that they copied, the vocal riff sounds incredibly similar. Seems almost impossible that they weren't at least inspired by her song (didnt like her song at all but she has a point)
doing vibrato on your voice is not an original idea, lots of people have done that before her
Potatofarm71 no is not though lol
Marioooo Selman :))
Skrillex was actually part of it, but who cares? Why would you search it yeah?
LoL LOL learn to read
Tl;dr- The audio file isn’t the lady who’s suing them and isn’t necessarily copied
FOR ANYONE WHOS CONFUSED: The audio file Skrillex is playing with is from a studio session with JULIA MICHAELS. the person suing them is WHITE HINTERLAND over the “ooh” sound. In HINTERLAND’S song “RING THE BELL” it begins with a shorter “ooh” sound similar to the one Skrillex made but the one Skrillex made was longer and of a higher pitch.
Just because 3 out of 5 notes are the same does not mean it is the same. She just ruined her career with this law suit.
alex95187 yes what a waste of time and also why the heck this songs like hers I doesn't even sound like it her riff was way too short to sound like sorry happy that Justin beiber won the case so what's the deal with song writers who sue people which is the riff
He lost actually, he has to give her 25% of all earnings of sorry :/
hahaha did she actually sue him? He should just bring his lappy to court and recreate it in front of them.
3 or 5 notes? He stole the whole fucking melody and lyrics 😂😂
Zin Lord What?
I freaking Love Julia Michaels... I wanna hear the whole demo.
*People don't even begin to acknowledge Julia Michael's talent and contribution to the music world.* She has helped in the creation of songs for the biggest artists in modern day music.
Right, and same with Ester Dean too
NEWS FLASH THERE ARE ONLY 108 notes in 9 OCTAVES SO THE CHANCES OF SOMEONE SOUNDING SIMILAR AREN'T THAT SHOCKING
The one time that I'm siding with Justin Bieber...a-and Skeillix too.
Bina G don't you mean Skrillex
Skrillex is fucking god. he doesn't steal shit. He's talented enoguh
He's stole a few melodies but way less than most artists.
Ring the Bell isnt even a good song...
Useless Jack who cares, the stole the vocal chop melody anyway
they didn't tho...
You mean Ring the Bell by Death Grips
DJ Ötzi??😂😂😂
Better than sorry
I didn’t know Jonah Hill had a UA-cam channel.
LMAO HE DOES SOUND LIKE HIM
Can someone please explain something to me: Why did he pitch it down 4 semi tones first? Couldnt he have just pitched the original up 8 semi tones to achieve the same thing?
-4 semitones was for the entire vocal, he wanted only the oooh part an octave higher.
that doesn't make sense, he doesn't need any of the other vocals, especially pitched down 4 semitones.
he was matching the guide to songs key, then realizing ooh part sounds better an octave higher. Listen to the original and compare the key.
Sean Hayes don't question the genius that is skrillex
Sean Hayes mr Colombo SHUT UP
Should change the title to 'Skrillex showing proof he did not steal from Winter Hinterland' cause there's some confused people in the comment section.
he has proven a point but with all the technology we have it could of early been her pitch converted into sorry
Could have yes but in this video it's clear that he took Julia's recording. Why go through the trouble to download the other track and sample that when it's faster and easier with a clean acapella from Julia ?
lmfao Justin and his team didn't steal shit, sure that ONE vocal sounds nearly the same as that chicks song, but y'all act like songs don't sound similar at some point. doesn't mean any artist (in this case Justin) stole anything from another artist.
Bruh skrillex was credited on jb s song you dumb fuck
StingRay well the lrycincs ate exactly the same
justin Gayber fan
correction (in this case skrillex)
Linda Ngo skrillex just showed you what justin beiber did to the original song to how are you so blind and dumb
Skrillex doesn't need to steal anything from anyone, EVER!
He's that good
I don't understand the problem here. It's just sampling. Artists do it all the time.
you missed the point
Yeah samples are fine when you get permission from the original artist but JB did not thats why he's getting sued cause he used her vocals which probably made him bank and she didn't get her rightful earnings
Lucid Memer but he didnt sample the other song that he’s being sued for. He sampled Julia Michael’s Version who was in the studio with him. He basically sampled his song writer
coming back to this comment... this has to be a troll
Boris Bumlord just stfu
So that sound in the drop, was that Julia Michaels's voice all this time??
Everyone.... She wrote the song lyrics, Skrillex was either given or sold the rights to the lyrics, then Justin was chosen to be the vocalist..
They didn't steal it.
Huh, he pitched -4 semitones then + 1 octave? Shouldn't you just + 8 semitones skrilldog?
Pitched down first, then up from the down for the clip that was already dropped. You're right, but he's also right.
Can somebody explain to me what the problem is?
Listen to "Ring the Bell" by White Hinterland
DestinationMan wow a 8 second clip sounds alike big deal
Check the like and dislike ratio for ring the bell!!!
Bruh lol U wish he stole it. Now producers stealing beats from UA-cam is another story.
I never realized skrillex produced sorry, wonder why he wasnt credited in the title
He's a producer, he got paid a commission fee like the 10+ producers who worked on the album.
What app is this?
Wait, why he pitched down but then pitched up???
Because what they ended up using in the track is +9 semitones away from what Julia originally sang, or -4+12. He was just getting it in the correct key first (while still recognizable as Julia’s voice bc 4 semitones isn’t enough to make her voice unrecognizable) to prove the point that it isn’t stolen.
Super simple production
Anyone ever hear Big Black Delta's 2012 single "Money Rain Down"? If not, I suggest you listen. Winter Hinterland's 2014 "Ring The Bell" accordion sample sounds suspiciously similar to Big Black Delta's. I wonder what she has to offer on that subject.
Title of this vid is just misleading
I like Catherine, she keeps an open mind
The fact that the demo version is in someone's computer makes me mad
There’s a site that says where every sample comes from in a song
Where?
love this
They end here :(
wait what? I’m confused. every bit of that is the EXACT same as the chorus in Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”. y’all saying it’s not the same w???
No. He's showing Julia Michaels' vocals. The one suing is White Hinterland. But White does sound exactly the same in her song.
Why can't i hear sound?
at some point one od them heard the other song, somebody could download the other song, put it 12 semitones down and hear how it was made, then rhe girl recorded it and told skrillex to pitch it up,too similar for not being heard even by accident
Matty i definitely think they stole it. just way too similar to be a coincidence
After this video, I have so much respect for Julia Michaels
*drops mic*
are you jonah hill
ok, *sureeee*
Btw i dont see a problem because it is a official remix so there is no need for a unofficial accapella
0:18 sound like selena
homeboy squashed that shit REAL quick
What program is he using?
ableton live
everyone knows skrillex is a fucking genius
Mic droppped.
What program is he using
Cuttup Gallery Ableton
Heres my take. This video shows how he got the sound they did in the song. But what she is claiming is that they stole the melody. Ive listened to both, and the melodies are identical, however i dont think the intention was to copy it or steal it. Theyve probably never even heard of her until she sued them. So if it is considered stolen it was more than likely unintentional for sure
still dont understand
Why didn’t he just turn it up by 8
I think many of you are missing the point....i mean look at the controversy with led zeppelin. they stole only one riff... but it's still stealing. furthermore why you don't get it is because that "ooo" part is the highest point of the song and where the maximum amount of tension is or whatever the word you want to use. the entire track is centered around it and the lyrics are as well.... change that one component and you have a different song...
what?? they literally proved that they didnt sample her song, he sampled on his artist who was covering sorry by Justin Bieber
Bailey Toon they stole it and made their own version of it.
It's too similar to be a coincidence.
hello walkman Lol. The video literally shows how he came up with the idea. He pitched down the original vocals, and thought that little run would sound cooler and octave higher. I doubt they would sample such a shitty and unknown song
Esteban Gomez they probably heard it, thought it sounded cool and made their own version. Simple as that.
I didn't understand...
what software is he using?
ableton live 9 suite
talented
I saw this on Instagram
Is Jonah Hill narrating this?
Why's Jonah Hill showing us though?
That oooooo part sounds like justin when it was low. I thought it was him.
What app is that??
BlueDragonThunder19 thanks man!
I want the acapella by giulia plssss i want it so baddd please link me the acapella or something plsss
You seriously think you're gonna get it? From Skrillex?
GOT EMMM
Skrillex should counter sue
I know music has always been competitive but geez since idk when ppl listen to the beat more than the words when words told a story
imo ive never really cared about vocals unless they are really good and i always listened to the beat
The instrumental (in some cases) can tell a very interesting story. Listen to Gula by deadmau5 for example.
Pay the lady.
Whats the Programm ?
Windows Movie Maker
Paint
What the app called
app? You mean the program that he makes his music with? It's Ableton Live.
What the hell is Jonah Hill doing?
someone just go and watch the amount of dislikes on the ring the bell song...
its ableton live, every computer music programmer has to have this.
I'm originally a FL user but I do open Ableton some time to time.
I use only FL
Why would you ruin your career over something that is clearly not yours.
Skrillex producted sorry?
yes and bloodbop
The thing is...justin took that and did a voice over. He stole it.
900 IQ
Wst i :do not Undetstennd.
I mean skrillex made the song but justin made the lyrics so if people think skrillex stole it or whatever really they should look at justin but still
Why does this guy sound like Jonah Hill
Why did he pitch it down 4 semitones then back up to 12? Couldnt he just have pitched it up 8 semitones?
Or if he pitched it to the dial 12, why didnt he just do it from the start? Oo
He pitched down most parts then 1 part where it was meant to be higher he put it with 12.
Julia Michaels wrote sorry
Srillix is legend.
Finally this is bs show this to everyone
why doesn't he just pitch it up 8 tones in the first place?
He pitched all the vocal 4 semitones down and then he particularly pitched the "ooooh oooh" 12 semitones up, giving it an octave higher than the normal.
oh ok!
Give me this channel bro
He's not sorry.
Haha and by suing she destroyed herself. Good job - dislike like ratio on her song says everything...
Okay, the comments are making me cringe. Like what's the story?
The only good thing of "Ring The Bell" is the music video
The song was made by Skrillex and blood the entire album was....
what the fuck
How is this proof? He could have heard it then replicated it himself like he's doing here... This doesn't show that he thought of it himself it just shows he pitched a vocal...not being a "hater" just an opinion. If you listen to the alleged sample it's pretty much the same. It's like taking someones homework and changing it slightly so the teacher doesn't notice. I don't really care though. Whatever man
If Skrillex did hear Winter's song, then he was inspired by it. He didn't really steal it. The original has 4 "ooos" and this song has 5 "ooos". The songs are also completely different in sound, musicality, and genre. The only thing similar are the "ooos". She's essentially suing them for having a few notes similar to her song.
sloppy bottom I agree.
Inspired or not, the idea is stolen.
AtomicDeath48 just because it was changed slightly doesn't mean it wasn't sampled.
La di da di by slick rick & Doug E. Fresh goes like this - "la di da di we like to party"
While Miley Cyrus's We can't stop goes like - "la da di da di we like to party"
It was changed slightly but the original writers were still credited on the cyrus song. The difference with the can't stop writers and Skrillex is that the latter probably thought he could get away with using the sample for free because it was from an obscure track whereas the former was iconic in the music industry and they definitely weren't going to get away with using it for free without a fight. Though this is just speculation.
It wasn't sampled. Sampling is when you take a part of a song and change it however you want to fit into a song. Skrillex had another singer do the vocals, so it wasn't sampled. But if sounds like your against sampling. It's easy to find so much music online that is sampled from other music. A majority of music samples from other songs. A lot of lofi hiphop beats sample pianos and other jazz instruments without altering them or giving credit. A load of electronic music such as future bass use vox leads created from cutting samples of professionally produced acapellas. You can download a justin beiber acapella online and sample from it to create a new song, but I really think Winter is blowing this out of proportion though. I still stand by the fact that Skrillex's song is completely different from Winter's song because Skrillex added a ton of musical creativity to it. In my opinion, one small part that was supposedly stolen doesn't outweigh the shit load of creativity that made it into something new.
They stole it and modified it.
No nothing
Lol skrillex is bieber's producer... its practically his song
Guess she ran out of money and didn’t want to sell herself off
daaaaaaamn haha
This boi said semi toons
Complete proof that they sampled nothing of her's. Her career is over now, knowing how insane they are, JB fans will buy tickets to her show just to heckle and throw shit.
That demo is fire. I want that version. Also he's about to pay that other chick cause they straight jacked her.
What other chick? Julia? She wrote part of the song
Philly Band they aren't called Jack U for nothing
Philly Band Julia Michaels wrote the song, I'm sure she got her residuals
All you did was prove the he did....
