Im genuinely curious how DOOM was able to find some of these. The amount of hours he must have put in just to make a song amazes me and is why he has such a strong fanbase.
Its the media that was all around him. Cartoons and advertisements on TV, the RnB/ Psychedelic Rock records that he enjoyed, references to 70's/80's pop culture. DOOM leans on the everyman archetype to make his music more casual and relatable, with a villainous spin that reveals his more human qualities.
A pretty common technique for producers is just to go to record stores, buy a couple of vinyl records that look interesting and then dig through them for samples
Most of his beats weren't that complicated, so actually laying down the beats probably didn't take long. His skill as a producer was having a great ear for samples. In terms of where he got the samples from, I know that for his first album and other beats from that time, he actually dug through MF Grimm's record collection. He was sleeping on his couch for like a year
every skit he uses where they say dr doom is flipped to the point where it sounds so perfect when i watch the standalone clips it does not sound right.
