As a new fly tier I found whip finishing really difficult until a friend told me to keep the thread tight during the exercise. Thanks feather bender you do some great patterns. Can't wait for the UK lockdown to end so I can cast a fly. Stuart

I'm not really a beginner...but watching you sometimes I feel like one...
I really like the triangle idea...even more the little tool that is hollow sliding your wraps behind the eye...super way to get tied off on those touchy wet hackles! Thanks

All these methods are really applicable in different situations. Sometimes you need a rotary finisher, sometimes - english style one, and from time to time fingers are more comfortable. It all depends on the task you perform. So thanks, Barry, for freshening up all these ways.

Wish I had a vid to watch 20 plus years ago. I learned from pics in a book n some common sense. Thanks Bender! Never knew about the half hitch tool. Interesting.

That’s done great Barry. The only thing I would add is that while whip finishing with the tool you can continue to build and shape the head as required. Half hitch finish doesn’t allow you to successfully do this. Thanks for another upload dude. Keep safe.

It might be worth me mentioning that with the Matarelli whip finishing tool, it is very helpful to allow the bobbin to come towards the whip finish as you execute it (whilst maintaining tension of course). The thread between the bobbin and the hook will want to shorten as you whip finish, and if you fight this tendency by keeping the bobbin in place, tension will build up quite a bit and it becomes quite difficult to get the thread to release from the arm. This doesn't apply when using a Thompson style finisher as the arm is sprung to relieve this tension.
You can see the bobbin approaching the hook in the above video at 0:58, 1:17 and again at 1:46.
Thanks again for your excellent videos, Barry. Your videos inspired me to start tying and I caught my first fish on a fly I tied myself last year - one of your hare's ear nymph variants. A moment I will remember all my days. Keep up the great work!

Being a lefty is tough because it really doesn't mirror image very well if someone is trying to teach you. Where Barry shows you to make a triangle, that is the secret and what will help you. Remember the part of the thread that is horizontal to the hook shank is wrapped by the vertical post. Remember that triangle and it will come to you.😃

reuben ben reuben hahaha nothing wrong with a finger whip finish, people were doing it way before the tool, I mean people were tying flies without a fly vise, Lee Wulff was the master without a vise.
